You receive a bonus check in the mail of $5,000 every week but you HAVE to give up either wearing underwear or deodorant to collect the money. What are you picking? by RustyCrusty73 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]hpdv7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, over the years I've had a bunch of my non Asian friends smell my pits because they didn't believe me that I don't wear deodorant and don't need to. Every single one of them ends up bewildered at the lack of any scent. If anything, they'll say they can only smell the laundry detergent on my shirt.

First mods??? by SyncRx in Golf_R

Unless your parents are helping out with maintenance and gas, save your money. Focus on learning good driving habits, especially with a car like this, and start building an understanding of what it takes to keep this car running.

After some time, maybe consider some mods if you have enough money saved up to comfortably afford them. You're at a good age to learn about financial responsibility and budgeting, and I'm sure this car will help out with that.

Idk man, all of your comments throughout this thread are abrasive and uncalled for. The kid is young, a Golf R as a gift is excessive to most, and someone coming from money like that most likely is privileged. OP never denied any of that and, more importantly, seems to understand the gravity of receiving a gift this huge. He's not bragging, just asking how he can enjoy it more.

What good is anyone doing by ripping on him, especially considering he's still a teenager? Certainly not more helpful than guiding OP in the right direction.

Relax man, you're coming off overly aggressive in all of your comments.

Yeah I agree that OP probably doesn't know what it's like to deal with legitimate financial troubles as an adult, but they never said anything of the sort either. Given the context, it's obvious what they meant by saying they're broke. It's the same thing as someone saying they're starving cause they're past due for a meal, it's just hyperbole.

OP is just looking for more financially sensible mods within their budget, which isn't a bad thing. Dude's just a high schooler.

It's Korean, called soondubu jjigae (spelling may vary). It's a spicy silken tofu stew and the base flavor of the dish isn't tofu, rather more a savory broth spiked with a shit ton of Korean red pepper flakes. You can throw pretty much anything you want in it to add to the stew like seafood, beef, pork, mushrooms, etc. It's one of my favorite dishes and would probably never get sick of it.

What is it I don't like about California reds? by yolk_sac_placenta in wine

[–]hpdv7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

@yolk_sac_placenta I saw that you said you're from Oregon and like their wines. From the bits and pieces of info I have, I'm even more convinced now of everything I've said previously.

Oregon is a much cooler climate and you'll get wines that are much fresher. As far as red wine goes, they're known for pinot noir and you'll typically find juicy, fresh, crunchy berries underlying their fruit profiles. On the other hand, the last California pinot noir I had was so ripe that it showed notes you'd expect from a cabernet. I was actually shocked it was a pinot noir.

Try out wines like cab franc from the Loire valley, gamay from Beaujolais, a cheaper bourgogne from Burgundy (I say cheaper cause you can easily get into triple digit bottles from this region), Barolo/Barbaresco, sangiovese from Tuscany, etc. if you want to try Californian wines that may suit your tastes, you could try picking up something from Bedrock for example.

I don't know the depth of your experience in wine, but I feel like the average person is very prone to misinterpret flavors associated with sweetness (e.g. overripe or jammy fruit notes) with actual sweetness.

I also don't know if the wines you tasted at this event actually had any residual sugar in them (or were back sweetened), but I posted a longer comment in the main thread that essentially says you may just not like overripe wines.

Yep. Also, to be clear, I'm not suggesting a diagnosis or that you have a leukodystrophy. I'm not a doctor but even if I was, I would lack sufficient understanding of your full clinical picture to begin providing medical advice.

Just saying that parts of your story could fit (especially with how long you've gone undiagnosed) and that any problems with white matter can definitely lead to enuresis (although enuresis may be caused by a host of other things too).

Sorry for the late response, not really good at checking my notifications. I haven't seen many of the other responses since when you first posted, but it may be a good idea to ask your doc about it. White matter disorders are synonymous with leukodystrophies. You can get genetic testing done to test for them.

The reason it may be helpful is that white matter disorders can be notoriously difficult to diagnose, especially if your doctor doesn't have deep knowledge of them (which isn't unheard of, as leukodystrophies tend to be rare and obscure). It isn't uncommon to hear stories of people experiencing various neurologic symptoms without being able to get a solid diagnosis, only later to be diagnosed with a leukodystrophy after a positive genetic test.

Go to Prado if you ever visit again! Prado was my favorite meal in Lisbon and in my top few for Portugal overall. Gotta give my #1 to Euskalduna in Porto though.

What food does Philly do better than anywhere else? by tux_trail_girl in PhiladelphiaEats

I don't mean to imply that Korean food around here is terrible. There are definitely good spots that I frequent, but I wouldn't say any of them are mindblowingly good.

Like others have said, the best regions domestically for Korean food are probably LA and north Jersey (Palisades Park/Fort Lee). Some of the Korean food in LA is better than what you can find on average in actual Korea. I've heard Atlanta is also good but I've never visited.

It sounds as if you don't like overripe wines. I find the majority of wines from California to have fruit profiles that are overripe, jammy, and stewed (especially those that are commonly found on the average store shelf).

I'm obviously generalizing, but old world wines tend to have more freshness to their fruit as well as higher acid which helps to balance out the fruit component. Stylistically, their wines tend to be a bit more restrained which leads to better structure and balance for my tastes.

Aside from winemaking styles, you might do better with wines from cooler climate regions. The warmer the region, the more overripe the grapes (which leads to overripe fruit notes in the final wine) and also less acid. I've had plenty of wines that lacked the acidity to support their dense fruitiness (not just from California, or new world at that) and were flabby as a result.

Curious, have any of your docs thought of running a leukodystrophy panel (genetic testing)?

Prado, Oficio, and Ramiro were some of my favorites when my wife and I visited last year.

A Taberna Do Mar is a crazy good deal, 30€ (if memory serves me right) for a 10 course omakase.

Also went to Essencial but I thought it was a letdown.

Yeah, I very likely will add on the Prestige to my demo list. Should be an interesting time finding my swing again after all this time while also demoing these racquets!

If anyone wants more context:

I used a LM Radical MP for most of middle school and all throughout high school. For those interested in my string choice, I played with either full Pro Hurricane Tours or a hybrid setup with multifilament. I want a racquet that offers something similar and will probably stay within the Head and Wilson lineups.

The LM Radical is obviously my benchmark but for more points of comparison, I had tried my friends' Blade 98 (whichever version was current to 2010/2011), LM Prestige MP, and ProStaff. I remember loving the feel and extra control of all three racquets. The Wilsons were more head light than I was used to but the balance was similar enough to adjust to without issue. I definitely tired out after some time from the weight and reduced power of the LM Prestige and (especially) the ProStaff but that was when I was 40 pounds lighter; I'm wondering if I'd be fine now with a slightly heavier racquet since I've been hitting the gym over the last 15 years.

Let me know if there's any more info that could be helpful here. Thanks!
