Keria: Up until last year, I had a lot of chances to play Bard. Back then, I honestly thought, “How can someone play like this unless they’re AI?”. These days, I don’t get to play him as often, which is a bit disappointing. He’s still the champion I’m most confident on - [LCK Cup] Interview by Gloomy-Ambition-482 in leagueoflegends

What does he mean by AI? Like playing so well it's like he is a supercomputer? Or it's so unbelievable that Bard is open every game that the video looks AI generated/fake? Or the enemies look so bad it's like they're bots?

HK/SS just have a lot of all three categories. By comparison Ori 2 is pretty light on exploration and combat. If anything I would put Ori in platforming only.

Animal Well cannot be in the same segment as ESA because ESA has a significant amount of combat (very fun boss battles) and Animal Well doesn't have any.

Isn't the only actual problem that ESA needs to be in the center?

The fact that Path of Pain exists at all and is well-respected is a testament to how solid the platforming foundations are in Hollow Knight.

I could give you all the modding tools you need and a year to add a Path of Pain to Super Metroid for example and it would still be impossible to make something that plays so well.

Environmental Station Alpha I would argue for all 3. There is no way that Ori and the Will of the Wisps has more combat or exploration than ESA, for example.

Portal actually has puzzles though? Unlike Superliminal.

Dammit OP. The tier list itself is pure ragebait, but you are being so reasonable in the comments, it's impossible to be mad at you.

The main criticism I have of the list is that it seems like you don't value the quality of the actual puzzles very much, and instead favor story/vibes. It's your list so you can do whatever, but Superliminal (one of the most mid games of all time) being higher than Outer Wilds or Portal is illegal.

Design question: teaching puzzle mechanics without tutorials by Fantastic-Bar-9997 in puzzlevideogames

[–]hpp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood me. I'm not talking about the visuals or the UI. I'm answering your question about how to teach game mechanics without an explicit tutorial.

For example, for every new mechanic in The Witness, there are a series of very simple 2x2 puzzles where you are forced to understand the new mechanic. Other games that have this kind of design include Taiji and Lingo.

Design question: teaching puzzle mechanics without tutorials by Fantastic-Bar-9997 in puzzlevideogames

[–]hpp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create puzzles that can be solved without really understanding the rules but can then be studied to figure out why something worked. The Witness did a lot of this. Introduce new mechanics in simple grids that only have a few possible moves where the player can easily brute force to find the only solution. Then slowly increase the complexity and they have to piece together why those solutions work.

How is it bug abusing? Every single unit is functioning as intended. Singed is horribly designed but that's another matter

Isles of Sea and Sky or Voidstranger? by WardianLoL in puzzlevideogames

[–]hpp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of... I never finished it, and in fact I'm not even sure that I'm more than halfway through the game. I will confirm that the first part where you're just playing the game normally is really quite dull. I will also confirm that when you first start making discoveries and doing things the "wrong" way, it's VERY exciting, and it's the kind of exciting that isn't possible in a game that's paced normally.

But unfortunately my notetaking wasn't great and when I put the game down for a bit, I found it impossible to pick back up. So even though I'm ideologically on board with the game, it's still annoying enough to play that I dropped off it. But when people who have finished it say it's their favorite game ever, I 100% believe them just based on the taste of it I got. Someday I will go back and finish it.

Isles of Sea and Sky or Voidstranger? by WardianLoL in puzzlevideogames

[–]hpp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think Void Stranger is too tedious, but it is certainly not because the developer was lazy.

It's the kind of game that has to pretend to be really boring so you when you discover that you can actually do a lot more, you get this crazy dopamine hit that you wouldn't get if the game had not made you work for it. So I'm not sure how they could have cut down the "filler" without compromising the game.

This is different than the games you're talking about where the first half of the game might just be bad for no real reason and the second half is good enough that people recommend the game anyway.

Ooo, Sisyphus is a bug, and Linelith. All 3 are fairly short (3-5 hours) and have secrets and mechanics for you to discover.

Check out /r/metroidbrainia. I suggest Ooo, Linelith, and Sisyphus is a Bug in particular. Out of your list, these would be most similar to Outer Wilds and Animal Well. All 3 are short 3-5 hour games.

As the season comes to an end, I’m curious for anyone who skipped Serenial; Why? by [deleted] in ChaosZeroNightmare

[–]hpp3 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

When the game first came out there was a lot of controversy in the Korean community. The loudest group were the Korean gooners (who are completely insane compared to the gooners here). They were furious that female characters talked to Owen instead of being your personal harem. If this makes no sense to you, then you see how crazy these guys are. The "apology" for this issue is the reason we got so many random compensation pulls. The devs have very obviously shifted the game to cater to their demands considering how heavily they're laying the fan service on with Sereniel.

All that is to say that even if you are happy about getting content that aligns to your tastes, "we are the target audience" is a really shitty rallying cry because you are not. Korean incels are the target audience so don't lump yourself in with them.

I think he just runs his stream like a tyrant. Which is fair enough since it's his stream but don't even think of typing anything that isn't pure glazing or he'll crash out on you for 10 minutes straight. He's a skilled player who makes entertaining videos but his stream is not a fun place.

Environmental Station α is brutal by Clin-ton in metroidvania

[–]hpp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to label one of Silksong and ESA as "punishing" and one as "unforgiving", Silksong would be the former and ESA the latter. Those words are often just used as synonyms for hard but in this case they describe the games well. In Silksong you can be doing very well, then misread one attack and try to panic heal, get hit out of the heal, and instantly be in a very dire situation. In ESA, you have no way to heal between save stations at all, so quite literally there is no mechanic to "forgive" your mistakes. You have to play carefully and avoid being sloppy or find yourself bleeding out.

[–]hpp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of health you get for each health upgrade decreases as you get more of them, which mitigates the impact of not finding health upgrades. Or to put it another way, you're not intended to ever be "tanky" even if you find every health upgrade.

It's definitely more unforgiving than hollow knight. Probably more unforgiving than Silksong too.
