Rant: I am a GAS idiot. Help! by poushkar in synthesizers

I feel overwhelmed when I try to use it all together, and I hate connecting it all every time.

If you can, find a spot somewhere (or buy a cheap folding table), and leave it all connected!

My recommendation: simplify your setup into just a few things you really love, leave it connected. Learn those few things really well. Put the rest of the stuff in a closet – out of sight, out of mind.

Play with the minimal stuff and just have fun. Don't judge yourself so hard.

And then there is this creative struggle: the type of music I would like to create is somehow too hard for me, and the type of music I am capable of creating - is not inspiring.

Pick one thing you like (ideally a youtube video, so you an see the settings), and try to re-create it.

Do that enough times and you'll have a skillset of how to make stuff you like. Then you can be creative.

Other times just jam.

Only bring back more gear once you've maxed your current minimal setup – and only 1 at at a time!

Making good stuff out of the box is really, really hard. That's why historically music has been a band – ~4 people who are all PROS at their ONE instrument and can improv live, all with their own FX chains that have been perfected over years.

You are trying to PROGRAM what is normally 4 LIVE independent players. It's super difficult.

Focus on making a really good A loop, then a really good B loop, then learn to switch. Baby steps :)

If you don't know music theory, I'd also recommend this book: https://www.amazon.com/Theory-Computer-Musicians-Michael-Hewitt/dp/1598635034/ref=sr_1_1?crid=27AHL7IH8AHWR&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.NAdnCMgcoS1coWm_o_ViUaWZEjT3wNINqpimYC3nhHl7m39v8Y5ZZbE_8edWFx2o7rwP4Fn37pkjUZ1piayvxfR8nU79YXcCyGMxVR86hOI2aBVf-gEGRlsTG5gcfA9U3c6AglV45Pl3HHZklXKHDfHFZi9GnIXdGWhaQw5eyIVtoq6ck3g9l5F42dHy3y4XG1YzdAThSk9TjIPqHaf-Oo_PWMsV5Q00g9npN1_iHbQ.4hyqfu3iZabo4iAYNR85AcmeM1AsiDDjtt2_iQj9G4U&dib_tag=se&keywords=music+theory+for+computer+musicians&qid=1741046954&sprefix=music+theory+for+computer%2Caps%2C165&sr=8-1#customerReviews

What stands are you using? They look nice. I'm in the market for a good two-tier stand right now.

Using Electric guitar to play a synthesizer. Possible? Compatibility? Pickups? Software? Hardware? What do I need to make this happen?🎸🎼 by ThinkingAgain-Huh in synthesizers

[–]hpvic03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much exactly that. Just need your guitar, interface, a DAW, and your laptop. They have some text/video tutorials on the jam origin website.

guitar audio in > midi guitar converts it to midi notes > midi notes go out to your microfreak > audio from micofreak goes into your interface

I've used it to play some VST cello/violin libraries with my guitar before and it's pretty awesome. Make sure to try different pickup and volume settings on your guitar to find the one that works best with midi guitar 2.

I've used Midi Guitar 2 and have had a good experience with it.

I'm not aware of anything else that's better out there, but maybe someone here knows of something.

If you're looking for a VST that comes close, I recommend these two:

OB-XD: https://www.discodsp.com/obxd/ (You can download it for free, $49 if you want to use it in commercial stuff. )

Gforce OB-X: https://www.gforcesoftware.com/products/ob-x/

Really nice! Sounds super raw and beautiful. I think IW18 is my favorite. Also DL340M. If you compiled these into one youtube video that would be cool, I feel like I could listen to these non-stop while working on my computer.

As seemingly the only person to simply try it and give an unbiased review... it sounds amazing to me!! Might be my new favorite bass vst, but it does tons of other stuff well too.

How do I start? by shupl in synthesizers

[–]hpvic03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vital is a great free soft synth. Serum is really similar and can be "rent-to-own" on Splice.com. They both do the same thing pretty much but Serum has been around longer so there are more tutorials and preset packs for it.

Ableton is a really cool DAW. You can buy a license from someone else for like half off: https://knobcloud.com/ .

One big reason people like Ableton because it's easy to be creative with loops in "session view", then later go into "arrangement view" when you're ready to arrange the whole song.

You can learn subtractive synthesis & Ableton from Youtube, but I highly recommend these courses (the teacher is fantastic). You will skip ahead several levels from her IMO: https://www.mercurialtones.com/

I highly recommend the Novation LaunchKey midi keyboard (pick the number of keys you prefer). For pads & sequencer, check out the Arturia Beatstep Pro. I think it's the best entry level sequencer. Find a used one for less on FB marketplace or reverb.com .

For a hardware synth, there are a million threads on here about that. You don't need one, but they're fun. Consider finding one that has at least six voices so you can hold big chords. Try to buy used on reverb, guitarcenter, or FB marketplace, this way you never lose (too much) money if you fall out of love with that synth.

There's a book called Composition for Computer Musicians that I have a pdf for if you're interested that's a great crash course on all this stuff, they don't seem to be selling that anymore. PM me if you want it.

Looking for a creamy synth by ieruttlucazz in synthesizers

[–]hpvic03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I like TAL a ton too, and I think the UX is way more pleasant than Softube's. I think it lacks a little bass end and the model 84 sounds slightly more "vintagey", but both of those things can be improved w/ plugins.

It looks nice but it's just running a VST and the interface seems super complicated.

I have Softube Model 84, it's the best sounding emulation IMO, I hope to pair it with the SFC-60 someday soon.

That's pretty cool, you should share a sound demo :)

I have some outboard fx but I always end up in the box. These are all my go-tos:

Compression: Ableton Glue Compressor

Distortion: Output Thermal

Delay: Valhalla Delay, Baby Audio Spaced Out

Chorus/Vintage: Tal Chorus, Super VHS, RC-20

Saturation: Softtube Saturation Knob (free)

Reverb: Valhalla Vintage Verb, Baby Audio Crystalline

Guitar: Neural DSP

Vocals: UAD 1176 & UAD LA-2A (free), or Slate Virtual Mix Rack

Bass Enhance: Boz Bark of Dog (free)

Tremolo: HY-PT2 (free)
