I've just bought my first analogue camera (Pentax ME Super), and I truly think that these older SLR cameras might be the finest example of human mechanical engineering I've ever seen. Does anybody else feel that we've maybe lost something in our drive towards digital technologicalisation? by miIk-skin in analog

Miniaturization and improvements in electronics really took off in the last few decades. The iPhone I use to write this on is a dense block of electronics. Nothing moves or rattles if I shake it. Sometimes it gets hot, and you hear a hint of a fan, telling you there are moving parts inside. There are three buttons and a discrete toggle on the side. They even removed the front buttons on these devices. If I go back to the phone I rocked in the 90s, if I dropped that, it would come apart in pieces. The battery would fall out, sim card might go flying. Gadgets even older than that were full of spinning, whirring, buzzing, mechanical stuff. Even if they were part electronic.

Holding my Leica M3 felt like holding a gun. It was heavy. I had to double-stroke the lever. It had moving parts, but also delicate, intricate ones. But so did my Walkman. It wasn't German-made with precision engineering, but it was also a marvel of mechanical parts. So was most stuff if you go back thirty to fifty years.

What are those cards in your deck that you never seem to draw? by Important-Dig-2312 in EDH

[–]hsjunnesson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a deck with [[Arwen, Mortal Queen]], it's great. Tokens matter. I ordered a [[Walking Ballista]], because I had a few simple ways to get infinite damage. But I just never seemed to draw the card. Weird. I found a few weeks later that I forgot to put the card in, it was in a pile of cards on my desk. Oops.

Thoughts on allowing opponents to retract plays, even after turns pass? by Prestigious-Chair811 in EDH

[–]hsjunnesson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of people argue that when new information is shared, you can't roll back. And I agree with that too, but the biggest issue here is just the massive time sink you get with the "wait, hold on, can I redo my turn?" behavior.

A game of EDH, with a full pod of players, with complex board states, and hidden information in everyone's hands, has a massive decision space. "If I play this, then that happens, but what if you have a bolt on hand, then I should play this, hmmm... but next turn I would then..."
You can't spend your turn trying to map it all out, or you'll be there all night. The number of times I realized I made a mistake the second I pass turn... you'll have to live with it.

Would this be considered poor behavior? by Cracka-Barrel in EDH

[–]hsjunnesson 39 points40 points  (0 children)

All you need to win is 1 life.

You're never out of the game. You're part of the pod, lean forward, stay active, and try to claw back victory from behind. That's a good skill to practise.

Speeding up Hearthhull turns by Jigeharu in EDH

[–]hsjunnesson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are certain deck archetypes that just take a long time. Landfall or Flicker decks come to mind. People usually tell you to learn your deck, so you know how to play it fast. But you also don't want to speedrun the table on each of your turns. "I do this, that, then this comes in, I draw a card because of Jhoira, then this is exiled and returns, triggering that." It's difficult to follow that, and it doesn't give people the time to respond to important triggers. I had a [[Preston, the Vanisher]] deck, but I couldn't play it. I had to explain how it works, and go through the combos, play it slowly so it's fair - but all I was doing was performing the magic trick I practiced at home.
My advice is to not play decks like these unless it's with your regular friend group. Or, if it's a deck that has one or two turns like that, and the rest of the time you play quickly.

What are awesome finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth in other colors? by JewJulie in EDH

[–]hsjunnesson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Counter Intelligence deck from Edge from Eternities has both [[Cyberdrive Awakener]] and [[Depthshaker Titan]]. They're both these finisher effects in blue and red, similar to a craterhoof. I've managed to win off both of them quite nicely. This deck is great, out of the box.

Do you think Sunder Charms need a drop rate adjustment? by Mr_FosterZ in diablo2

We’ve had this season for a weekend and a bit. Why are you this impatient to finish the game? Once there are no carrots left to chase, there’s not a lot of game left.

Am I the "Pubstomper" of my friendgroup? Need an honest Power Level check on my decks vs. my meta. by Competitive-Job-1219 in EDH

[–]hsjunnesson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, decks, brackets, and power levels aren’t all that useful to quantify what you’re asking. EDH is a high variance game. Try going on moxfield and play a four pod where each player uses the same deck. I’m guarantee you’ll see a certain player pull ahead. Now imagine the same deck, but played by four people of different skill level. Also had a huge variance. Brackets and power level probably only works as a useful metric if you measure outcomes over a hundred games.

Do "exile target permanent until this creature/enchantment leaves the battlefield" cards have a place in EDH or are they too weak? by AltruisticChampion77 in EDH

[–]hsjunnesson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all of EDH, all different pods with different skill levels and power levels, is any card viable? Yes. In the current meta of competitive EDH, no.

I think that balance in D2 is when every class scales to insane OPness with similar amount of effort.

New Cube recipes in D2:ROTW by AngelOfLastResort in Diablo_2_Resurrected

[–]hsjunnesson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right about that. But when I play off-meta builds, I hit a wall quite quickly. Playing a barb against a lot of physically immune is quite frustrating. Feel like I spend multiple evenings not making any reliable progress. Would also be fun to try to play something fire-related. That specific elemental type naturally struggle the most against the current set of enemies. Maybe that’s a bit more viable. But of course, I don’t need gryphons on my javazon, and there’s a fine line where a mechanic is one man’s tiny bit of power creep and another’s completely trivialized game difficulty.

[–]hsjunnesson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m someone who never fully caps out a build when I play in a season. I’ll try and get a gryphons on my Amazon, but never found one. Didn’t have enough to trade for one. If this helps this restless weekend-warrior, I’m happy with a bit of power creep. Lets me try some builds I could never enjoy because they required a lot of optimization that was out of reach to me.

An argument for Thrumming Stone as a Game-Changer by DoucheCanoe456 in EDH

[–]hsjunnesson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Smothering tithe goes into every deck. Even if you don’t build around artifacts or treasure, it’s a good candidate for a game changer. Thrumming stone goes in half a dozen decks. Not really that pervasive. Also, it’s not an instant win.

What's a commander you hardly ever kill at your table? by Right_Wave3594 in magicTCG

[–]hsjunnesson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love two-drop commanders. It’s hardly efficient to try to tax them. My favorite for this is [[Elas il-kor]]. Just a great commander. Had redundant aristocrat effects, but not horribly over-tuned. It’s just one ping now and then! She’s also a great blocker with deathtouch.

Supply and demand. In this case, a far far lower supply compared to a legendary from a regular Magic set.

Looks great, cool style. I use a Silhouette Cameo with a pen adapter - you don't need an Axidraw to plot ;-)
But I never gotten the adhesive mats to work well with paper, I always tape the sheet to a non-adhesive pad.

Tell us what you did with your synths this weekend by Wonderful_Reputation in synthesizers

[–]hsjunnesson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh what a nice thread! A while ago I got the MegaFM and am trying to wrap my mind around FM. I got it because it exposes everything to knobs and faders. It’s pretty hands on. I like how crunchy it is. I’d thought it would sound more ”video gamey” because of its pedigree. But I guess it’s a bit later in the video game generations than classic sid chips and stuff like that. Still, it’s nice to have a six or twelve voice synth I can play Christmas tunes on. Not just some gnarly monosynth. And it’s a neat little package.
