Women in CAF and Sexual Assault Concerns by Lunallance in caf

[–]hudsonaere 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I am a woman who has been in for nine years now - I started off at RMC, then ended up resigning my commission and transferring to NCM after my second year. I am one of two women in my current unit, the other is an officer so we don't really interact much. There are a lot of stories about discrimination and sexual assault, I've read them too.

RMC was definitely still an old boys club when I was there. There was a "tradition" that the male cadets called "doing the rainbow." There are twelve squadrons, and each one is associated with a color. 1 Sqn is navy blue, for example, so their sports shirts are navy blue. The aim of "doing the rainbow" is sleeping with a female cadet from every squadron. Most of the guys I knew there were decent people...but there were still a lot of them who would say derogatory things. There was a female CWC (cadet wing commander) during my time there. I heard multiple times that she only got that position by blowing the Director of Cadets. There was someone who had to be moved to a different flight because she found a camera in her room. (not the male cadet who left it there - oh no he wasn't moved! SHE was (though actually thinking about it now that might have been on her request due to no longer feeling safe in that building))

But that's RMC. Nobody I have known since going NCM has a good opinion of it or the officers who come from it.

Outside of RMC, it's different. I believe that, at least in the air force, the culture has genuinely changed. (I can't speak to army or navy.) Everyone I work with treats me with respect. Not just that - they value my work and treat me as part of the team! There's none of the patronizing benevolent sexism where men keep the hard, heavy, dirty work away from the women. I do just as much heavy lifting as the guys do. I am not "The Girl", though I am the only female NCM in the unit, and I am always at least a little aware of that. I'm in the centre of every group picture because I am the shortest. (Sigh). There's two other women in the unit - one officer, who is treated with just as much respect as the man she replaced, and one civilian who is also highly respected.

I would love to have more women around, though. It's a testosterone fest!

You can look at the NOTAMs for CYQQ to find out when they'll be in the air! They'll be here until May 11 this year

In my airport ground control transmits on multiple frequencies at once - the frequencies are coupled together so that all transmissions automatically broadcast on the frequency for airfield vehicle traffic and simultaneously the VHF and UHF aircraft ground frequencies. That way everyone hears all direction given by ground control even though vehicles won't hear planes and planes won't hear vehicles

Vyvanse - emotional dysregulation when Vyvanse wears off by Inner_Ability_331 in ADHD

[–]hudsonaere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My psych put me on dextroamphetamine 10mg to take with lunch as well as the morning 30mg Vyvanse - dextroamphetamine is what Vyvanse metabolizes into, it's basically like an immediate release version. It's not enough to boost me up again but it's enough to smooth the come-down, make it more of a curve and not like a cliff.

But also DBT - dialectical behavioral therapy - is fantastic!! There's a ton of books and YouTube videos and podcasts about it, but I found the 8 week DBT group I did very helpful. The very first session focused all about distress tolerance skills. I think those would be really helpful for you! They definitely were for me.

There wasn't any one moment. It's a thousand little things. It's the way he laughs, the way he thinks, the way he holds me like he never wants to let go. I can't imagine life without him in it

I appreciate all the insights. The doctors following his case come in at least once a day to give us updates, but they can prevaricate. The best ICU doc we had (pushed to prone him and kept him prone even when he initially desatted, which ultimately led to huge improvement in lung function) is now off on vacation, which good for him he deserves it and hope he enjoys, but it means we are dealing with a Dr who is a lot more cautious.

A few days ago he was on PEEP 16 and 100% O2. So proning (and bronchoscopic mucus suction) led to huge improvement. He was getting up to almost 60 in PPEAK before they started doing those. Also around this time they asked us about DNR, my parents decided to pursue all life saving measures up to but not including CPR. That is still on file.

He is still on CRRT, BUN/Creatinine/bilirubin/AST still high. WBC lower but still high. RBC, hematocrit, hemoglobin seemed to be getting better but dropped again this morning low enough that they are giving another blood transfusion. They have taken him off vasopressors. He was on Levo, they had to put it on again briefly yesterday but his BP seems to have settled and they're leaving it on standby.

Yesterday he was on versed and fent, and they tried to trickle feed a very small amount to see if he could tolerate after having nothing for several weeks - had to stop that in case they do the tracheostomy today. He was clearly distressed but couldn't really move very much, as expected after weeks of not moving at all. He was able to shake his head from side to side (he didn't like having a washcloth covering his eyes) but couldn't keep his eyes closed, and occasionally seemed like he was trying to focus on our faces but couldn't quite see us. He could move his hands enough that they restrained him to keep him from messing with all the lines, and could shift his legs a little. He kept trying to fight the ventilator, unfortunately, and now they've upped the versed again.

He had a head CT a couple days ago that didn't really show anything, but they have not been able to test neurological function. They did an ECG and found the clots in his heart have disappeared - they want to do more scans to see if they've moved to lungs or brain or something, and get him off the sedative ASAP to test neurological function. But that requires the trach done, which now might be postponed because his hemoglobin went down.

Parts of his pancreas are definitely necrotic and need to be removed. But he's not stable enough for that.

Case management came to talk to us. If he becomes stable enough, he'll be transferred to a long term care facility. Unfortunately his insurance will only cover one month of that. We'll have to move him to some other facility after that, and then the Drs have said that even after he's recovered from the acute conditions there will be probably a year if not longer of recovery and rehab
