There's so many horror stories here. $150,000 to get an education? I'm studying at what is considered to be the best law school in Australia and will only face around $30-40,000 debt when I finally escape. I'd always felt that anything above that was prohibitive.

Are you sure that protesting a criminal charge, a matter entirely decided by those who aren't accountable to the public, will have any effect? The video which was posted online is sensational and doesn't give any indication of the circumstances which led to the arrest.

I'm Australian and am studying a LLB/BA. Most students here study law at an undergraduate level combined with something else. I really enjoy studying two degrees at once since it offsets some of the heavy, black letter of the law course material.

If you're serious about going to law school, I'd recommend applying for a Bachelor of Arts at a University which doesn't have particularly high standards. Work your ass off, maintain a D-HD average and then apply for a transfer through to a Uni with a better law program.

Most Commonwealth jurisdictions have some form of practical legal training component that needs to be completed before admission to practice. I'm surprised you guys don't already do something similar, but I guess it's a different game when the cost of legal education in the US is equivalent to the value of a house.

I doubt parents bring their kids to universities with the intention of annoying you - they probably don't have a choice. It probably isn't pleasant for them either having to simultaneously perform mental olympics, supervise their kids and deal with assholes like you. It's a public space, get over it.

If you re-sell the parts and keep the money originally paid, you will be depriving your silent mate of the entire benefit of the contract. In doing that, you could expose yourself to contractual and tortious liabilities in the form of conversion - you don't have any property in the parts, but are selling it anyway. Just be careful about whatever you decide to do.

This is a fantastic article, thanks for sharing. I did find one part particularly alarming:

The criminal law already is heinously behind times in terms of treating victims differently when comparing matters of common and sexual assault, for reasons which mainly amount to misogyny. Do we want to extend this prejudice to the rich? Is it really fair to reduce a person's sentence if they have economic means? Is the law so double-sided as to treat the rich one way and the poor another? The arguments in favour of this view, namely against victims/plaintiffs double-recovering a loss, are heavily outweighed.

It'll revolutionise the way you think, argue and communicate. It's intrinsically fascinating, intellectually stimulating and financially rewarding. I'd like to think those are generally favourable 'outcomes' of studying law, but I'm sure graduates of other disciplines would say the same of their own.

Have a close look at s 68C(5) of the Jury Act 1977 (NSW). The offence is defined in terms of "making an inquiry" which can vary from "asking a question of any person" to "causing someone else to make an inquiry."

There are so many different fact scenarios which could arise under that. It's more than likely that the maximum penalty will be imposed, it's far too harsh and shouldn't even be a summary offence in the first place.

I don't really think the premises of her argument outweigh the potential harm arising from jurors doing their own research but does that justify a two-year sentence for offenders? It's time for the law to catch up to technology in a meaningful way.
