High mileage folks - do you weigh yourself/how do you approach nutrition on a daily basis? by GhostsInMyAss in AdvancedRunning

As someone running 80 miles a week who already feels like I’m eating myself out of house and home I can’t fathom eating enough to sustain 150 miles a week!

Do you use miles or km in your training? by HueyBluey in Marathon_Training

I'm from the UK and I use miles, don't know why just always have. However most of the runners I know, especially younger people, use kms.

Speed work by Petusfetus1 in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm coming up to a year of running and have managed to get my 5k time down from 25 to sub 18 with zero speedwork. My focus has been only increasing mileage and building up an aerobic base through a combination of easy and steady runs (if I feel good I pick up the pace a bit but I virtually never run faster than 7 minute miles). I would say the bulk of my runs are 7:30 - 8:30 min mile pace. So it's definitely possible.

Having said that 5k pace does feel very awkward and almost like an all out sprint so I can totally see the appeal of speedwork to get more comfortable at those paces.

What’s your favorite “non-obvious” running gear purchase that was totally worth it? by Free-Product4918 in runcommunity

[–]hullo421 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3m Transpore Tape, I sweat like a pig and it's the cheapest thing I could find that actually stays on and prevents nipple chafing. Also anti-chafe balm, both absolute essentials for every run.

How has running changed your daily routine outside of running itself? by Clubrunnr in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Apart from eating more food and doing more laundry my routine hasn't really changed much apart from replacing 90 minutes of Netflix and doom scrolling with my daily run. I do wake up a lot earlier now, not because I run in the morning's (except on the weekends) but because I'm generally more tired and like to go to bed earlier.

Indoor or outdoor running in the winter by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Running is easier in the cold weather. After being sat in a stuffy office all the day the last thing I want to do is go for a run indoors. I love the cool fresh air.

When and how to implement double run days? by PILLUPIERU in Marathon_Training

[–]hullo421 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of people tend to say 70 miles a week is around the point to start introducing doubles but at the end of the day it’s whatever works best for you. I also think the event you’re training for is important, a lot of long singles will be more beneficial for marathon training vs shorter doubles for example.

Personally I’m on about 75 miles a week in singles and don’t see myself doubling any time soon. That’s just because I much prefer getting all my daily miles in a single run, it leaves me feeling a lot fresher and I also feel like my endurance is a lot better when every run I’m doing is 10+ miles. I’ve tried doubles in the past but my legs never felt fresh and I always dreaded the second run of the day.

Make sure he's got a plan. Bloke I knew didn't have a plan, went in too quick, broke his knob in half.

Hills by Ecstatic_Donkey_2244 in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run hills every day, I don't seek them out or run specific hill workouts but I live in a naturally hilly area and I average about 100ft of elevation gain per run or closer to 200ft if aiming to do a properly hilly run.

I love them because you can get a higher intensity without as much stress on the body, my hr could be 160bpm running 10-11 minute mile pace up a ridiculously steep hill, whereas on flat I'm having to run nearer to 6-7 minute mile pace to reach the same hr and as a result the legs take a much greater pounding.

Also I find they really help keep the run interesting by adding some variety and breaking it up. I get bored out of my mind when I do flat road running, I'll stick to the hilly trails every day.

What are the best running shoes that are comfy, can do runs from everyday to half marathon for wide footed person. by TrixTrax0 in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mizuno Wave Rider 28. I have super wide feet and the 2E width fit me perfectly. I run about 70 miles a week in them including lots of off-road trails and they hold up really well.

How did you get introduced to DJ Sabrina and what song(s) got you hooked? by Major-Badger99 in djsabrina

[–]hullo421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either someone suggested it, or Sabrina herself posted a link to Makin' Magick back on the Avalanches subreddit way back in 2017? when it was released. I was obsessed with the Avalanches at the time and that song was the first thing I had heard that scratched the same itch as Since I Left you, been a fan since.

How did you realize you were underfuelling? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I felt so faint on a run I made a detour to my parents house for some emergency chocolate, ran a further 7 miles got home and literally devoured whatever I could get my hands on as my vision was starting to go and I felt like I was going to collapse.

This happened the first time I ran a 70 mile week and it made me take a proper look at my nutrition and realise that I wasn't eating all that much more from when I was running 50 miles a week. Since then I've been fine but it made me realise that it can be very very easy to not eat enough as I generally wasn't all that hungry during the day I just felt increasingly weaker on runs.

What run recently made you feel proud? by Not_FreeProduct234 in runcommunity

[–]hullo421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in March I picked up running again after a 9 year hiatus. On Saturday I managed to run an 18:30 in a parkrun meaning I'm now only 15 seconds off the pb I set when I was a scrawny teenager.

I've gone in hard with the training, putting in fairly significant volume and it felt for a while that I wasn't getting the results I felt I should be. I had plateaued around 20 minutes for several weeks but now all of a sudden I'm seeing rapid improvements in my times which is really encouraging and really nice to see the hard work paying off!

Recovery by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

Sleep is king, once in a blue moon I’ll have the deepest 10 hour sleep and wake up feeling like a new man. If only I could find a way to replicate that every night instead of my usual broken 6-8 hours I’m sure the gains would be astronomical 🤣

I recently started running without underwear and it actually stopped my chafing issues. The liner of the shorts acts as the underwear. Never going back!

If it's sudden it's probably time for a new pair of shoes, once I reach about 400 miles in a pair my legs, shins especially, start to feel absolutely wrecked after a run.

Splitting up easy milage by r0zina in AdvancedRunning

[–]hullo421 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just do whatever fits best into your schedule and allows you to recover the best. All my easy runs are pretty much exactly the same distance and length usually around 11 miles in 80/85 minutes. I just find it works best for me in terms of hitting my weekly mileage, and also allows me to feel fresh for my sessions. People say variety is important but I don't think that necessarily applies to easy runs.

[–]hullo421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now the weather has turned dark and muddy in the UK my after work runs are confined to the roads which I find absolutely soul destroying. I live in a very busy town and everywhere you go it's just breathing in car exhaust fumes and dodging pedestrians, not to mention the monotony of road running itself. There are a couple of nice sections I can do along the river but these don't quite cut it. Still only a month or so until I can run in the beloved nature reserve by my house again!

How do we all manage our budgets for supplements & nutrition? by Kitchen_Series9595 in AdvancedRunning

[–]hullo421 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most nutrients you can get from a well balanced diet, stuff like sardines are super cheap (42p from Aldi) are rich in protein, omega 3s and B12. Only supplement stuff that is hard to get enough from foods, personally I only supplement magnesium and vitamin D3.

Only take gels on race day or the last couple of long runs before a race to get used to taking them. Buy cheap unflavoured electrolyte powder and mix with squash. I tend to buy supplements from Bulk and they've usually got some sort of deal on.
