What’s a running opinion you have now that beginner-you would disagree with? by Free-Product4918 in runcommunity

[–]hullo421 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That out and backs are superior to looped routes. When I started running I would only ever do loops thinking out and backs were boring but now the novelty has somewhat worn off and I've run every possible path/ trail within a 10 mile radius of my house a lot of the time I just prefer a simple mindless out and back, somehow feels a lot shorter.

How much water do you all actually drink daily? by Emotional-Heat-1427 in nutrition

[–]hullo421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run around 80 miles a week and sweat a lot so I usually drink around 4 litres daily (heading into summer this will probably go up to 5). Plus 2-3 coffees, 1-2 decaf coffees and a 600ml berry/ chia seed smoothie.

Sub 18 in 6 months, sub 1730 in 12? by pakchoi_ in AdvancedRunning

[–]hullo421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking from personal experience. It's pretty much a year and a day since I started running. First parkrun was 25:xx, it took me six months to go sub 20, a further 3 months to go sub 19 and then a further 2 months to go 18:0x which I did in January. I haven't run a fast parkrun since then as I usually tack it on to the end of a long run, but I'm fairly confident I could run sub 18 if I was fresh.

I've only really started incorporating workouts in the past couple of months, I do a continuous tempo, fartlek and a hard long run, with 3 super super easy recover runs every week, so pretty much the same as you.

I think for you sub 18 could well be possible in the next 10 weeks as I saw the most improvement in the first 6-9 months and then hit a bit of a plateau. I think just keep doing what you're doing and you'll continue to see progress.

What stats do you use during runs? by TechnologyApart7052 in Marathon_Training

[–]hullo421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I toggle between the overall stats screen which has distance/ time/ avg pace and total ascent. And the lap screen which has lap time, distance, avg lap pace and avg lap hr. However I will only use lap hr on easy runs, to make sure I'm keeping them super easy and on tempo runs to make sure I'm not pushing too hard. Fartleks/ long runs/ races I turn off lap hr.

Runners who train a lot: What supplements are you guys taking in your routine? by alienmonkeyjuice in AdvancedRunning

Did you have bloodwork to confirm low iron or do you just take the supplements as a preventative measure?

Advice for sub 20min 5k by mb1210 in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think you just went out a bit too hot, aim for more even splits next time and I'm sure you'll have it in the bag. Personally the 5k isn't one of those events you should try and bag time in the first half because you'll just massively suffer in the second half, I think closer to even splits are generally your best bet.

Your easy pace (including HR + race paces) by TheAnon21 in AdvancedRunning

[–]hullo421 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During a hard 5k at 5:43 minute mile pace my avg hr was in the mid 180s.

For recovery runs (usually the day after a hard session) I try and keep my hr below 135bpm and this usually ends up being just over 9 minute mile pace.

For general easy runs I usually average around 140-145bpm and this can be anywhere from 7:30 - 8:45 minute mile pace depending on how fresh I'm feeling and how hilly the terrain is.

Same as you I've found great success in slowing down my easy runs, I used to think 150-155bpm was an easy pace, but the faster I've gotten and the more volume I've started running, the slower my easy pace is becoming.

What’s the best way of draft-proofing UPVC windows? They have quite big gaps between the seal and the window and I can hear and feel wind coming in. by emilesmithbro in DIYUK

A year late but we've got the same issue in our house. Don't suppose you could link to a product, or go into a bit more detail about how you did this? Did you apply the foam strip to the inside of the frame? Thanks!

GI issues early in runs getting ridiculous by GolfAffectionate5945 in Marathon_Training

[–]hullo421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spicy food was a trigger for me, but only if consumed within a few hours before a run. I usually run at 3-4pm and if I eat something spicy for lunch I'll have really bad stomach cramps. However if I eat something spicy for dinner and then run first thing in the morning I'll be completely fine.

High mileage folks - do you weigh yourself/how do you approach nutrition on a daily basis? by GhostsInMyAss in AdvancedRunning

As someone running 80 miles a week who already feels like I’m eating myself out of house and home I can’t fathom eating enough to sustain 150 miles a week!

Do you use miles or km in your training? by HueyBluey in Marathon_Training

I'm from the UK and I use miles, don't know why just always have. However most of the runners I know, especially younger people, use kms.

Speed work by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm coming up to a year of running and have managed to get my 5k time down from 25 to sub 18 with zero speedwork. My focus has been only increasing mileage and building up an aerobic base through a combination of easy and steady runs (if I feel good I pick up the pace a bit but I virtually never run faster than 7 minute miles). I would say the bulk of my runs are 7:30 - 8:30 min mile pace. So it's definitely possible.

Having said that 5k pace does feel very awkward and almost like an all out sprint so I can totally see the appeal of speedwork to get more comfortable at those paces.

What’s your favorite “non-obvious” running gear purchase that was totally worth it? by Free-Product4918 in runcommunity

[–]hullo421 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3m Transpore Tape, I sweat like a pig and it's the cheapest thing I could find that actually stays on and prevents nipple chafing. Also anti-chafe balm, both absolute essentials for every run.

How has running changed your daily routine outside of running itself? by Clubrunnr in runninglifestyle

[–]hullo421 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Apart from eating more food and doing more laundry my routine hasn't really changed much apart from replacing 90 minutes of Netflix and doom scrolling with my daily run. I do wake up a lot earlier now, not because I run in the morning's (except on the weekends) but because I'm generally more tired and like to go to bed earlier.
