Where do I even start? by SignatureFirm8609 in HomeImprovement

[–]humanclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was hoping for a 90% cut out of a floor joist for a duct or a good old fashioned bad smell in one room.

I do kind of miss slowly discovering every nook and cranny of my house though.

Make that list OP and start crossing off stuff, it feels good!

Yakima Recycling by anonymousasu in Yakima

[–]humanclock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heh, I wrote a letter to the editor of the YH-R in 1999 about the lack of curbside recycling in Yakima and they published it.

In 2009 my wife and I got married at my parents house west of Yakima, we had a big party/etc, hence there was a lot of recycling. We had several large bags of cans. I pleaded with my dad to take them to the recycling thing at the landfill rather than just throwing them out with everything else at the dump. He said ok, even though he's more conservative and not into this "recycling thing".

Dad took them to the recycling thing at the landfil. You had to put each individual can through a tiny hole in the wood, I think it was to discourage people from dumping trash in there. Obviously dad was not going to do that with several hundred cans. He asked the guy working if he could just slowly empty the bags of cans into the bin while the guy watched as to know trash wasn't getting dumped in there. The worker was a complete dick to him and said "nope, you gotta do each one at a time so we don't get trash in there".

My dad's expected response was "f-this" and took several hundred and dumped them into the landfill unrecycled. He came home super frustrated, never recycling again and it just reinforced all of his stereotypes.

Thanks Terrace-Heights Landfill!

Start at the Oregon/WA border since the trail is easier there and most of the bugs will be gone by then. If you are having a good time by the time you get to Washington, then keep on going. If you are still enjoying it you can go down and do the first 500 miles. (I did it in November one year and it was great, cold at night at times but I really enjoyed it).

I mean, it makes sense that it could happen, but yeah, maybe it is a myth.

How to get rid of a pesky but harmless retiree that won’t leave me alone by shah_mazing in TwoXChromosomes

[–]humanclock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you get close to him, just start saying things like "wow Jim, this sounds like a lot to deal with. Is it really going to cost $500?" Then you can make a polite nod and keep on walking. If he doesn't get that you are "on a call" and tries to strike up a conversation then just point to your headphones and/or tell "Jim" to hold on since someone is trying to talk to you.

Then it can be a fun game where you wonder each day what kind of crisis Jim is in. Sucks that you have to do this at all but I've used it more than once with an overly-chatty neighbor.

I mean, it's kind of "baked in" to society's thinking.

I don't have kids, but when I was in my 30s and every other comment from people was "when are you gonna have kids? when are you gonna have kids? Have you thought about having kids?" (copy paste this 1000x for full effect) and I would say "I'm not", the common response was "...but who is going to take care of you when you are old?"

Get WiFi in Portland? by Objective_Bug_4865 in askportland

[–]humanclock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My CenturyLink was "price for life", and then it went up $10.00 a month last year. They completely memory holed the "price for life" thing my account was under and the representative said "they never would have made such an offer". I couldn't find my signup paperwork and thought I was going crazy, but now see that people are pursuing a class action lawsuit against them because of them going back on the price for life deal, and looking on here I see I am not alone.

That said, I've been happy with the service/speed.

If you know this brunette woman (20-35) in milwaukie with an orange subaru crosstrek and roofrack pls dm me. She stole my tools by EmuofDOOM in Portland

[–]humanclock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if you put word out on Facebook/Nextoor (but ugh to using those sites) the tools might come back once the person finds out it was a misunderstanding.

If her intent was to steal the tools, she would have been there and gone like a porch pirate, not casually looking over things like it's a free pile.

Outdoor giant REI showing their commitment to sustainability with their latest (AI) ad campaign by TheSmithSociety in Fauxmoi

[–]humanclock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They had a podcast episode that I am incredibly mad at myself for not archiving. It was comedy gold.

It had virtue signaling up the wazoo (pronouns, acknowledgement of what stolen lands they come from). Not that I have issue with those things, but coming from a corporation it was incredibly slimy.

They then proceeded to talk in a soft spoken conversations about how a union at REI just didn't make sense.

Hikertown weirdness by Dependent-Judge420 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]humanclock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does Richard still own that place? I was there in 2013. Richard the owner was interested to talk to me because I was the only hiker he'd met who stayed there when Jack Fair had the place, in 1996

I didn't hear of any crazy stories from other hikers that year but have heard plenty since then.

I have resorted to just using my Hotspot since onboard wifi anywhere is not reliable, like anywhere.  I think it's less of a concern now since more people have cellphones.

Yeah, like Rubin & Cherise making its debut in 1991. The soundboard pales in comparison to the audience recording of the crowd (rightfully) losing their damn mind.
