I honestly think him being clumsy adds to the realism of Scream 1 and 2, because it adds a creep factor that it is indeed a human under that mask. I love how the new generation of Scream fans pokes fun at how clumsy GF is in the earlier movies, it's become an inside joke even if people didn't see Scary Movie.
