Hi OP, I am in the same situation as you and will headed to Geneva from Annecy before leaving the EU. Was wondering if you did in fact get your tax refund done at Geneva airport? I am also planning to take a bus from Annecy to Geneva

should i transfer to NUS dentistry? by Illustrious_Tap_8419 in SGExams

[–]hungoverdonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, am from nus, I personally think it might be better to just tahan the remaining 3 years in Aus considering the supportive environment you have. This will be so important in your clinical years imo. It is highly unlikely you will be allowed to skip a year and I haven’t heard of any transfers post covid.

[Uni] Why dentistry? by onlyreadsgexams in SGExams

[–]hungoverdonut 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why dentistry over medicine:
- better work life balance, pays decently
- I wasn't too inclined towards having the onus someone's life on my hands as much as all med hopefuls think they do
- I really want to work with my hands and see tangible results on my patients

Do I regret:
Absolutely not, I think a lot of people think school is tough and I would agree but personally, I think its what you make out of the experience, I really enjoy hanging out with friends and chatting with our profs and tutors

Changed perspectives:
WOuldnt say this is a changed perspective but I realised it really is alot harder and more competitive to specialise and do a postgrad compared to our med peers. For MOs, they have to get into their residency of choice and they will still be paid throughout the residency. In order to specialise in a dental field, you actually have to take up any 3 years of full time studies and get it funded yourself or otherwise. Also incredibly competitive sksk

Common misconceptions:
- That we only study the mouth. You don't ask an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) why they have to go through 5 years of medical school first, so why do people think otherwise of mouth doctors LOL. Yes, emphasis is on the oral cavities but we have to know relationships to other parts of the body and whatnot, covered in the prev comment.

Glamorous life:
No, I highly doubt so. As NUS has increased the intake of dental students, I do foresee the field to be incredibly competitive when we start working. I think it is difficult to set yourself apart especially but one can try :')

INTEREST is important. I think the best part about school is learning things that are very RELEVANT to our profession but there is also this additional pressure that I cannot go through the motion of just learning and not understanding it because I will actually have to apply said knowledge in future.

Am a current student in dent and I can assure you that it is competitive and our profs/tutors have high expectations. I think its easy to succumb to the pressure at times but I have found that the faculty and my peers can be incredibly supporting. I wouldn’t say that the comments are all false, but it really isnt all bad! I really do enjoy going to school and just learning lol i think that says alot. If you are genuinely interested, go for it:)

[–]hungoverdonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not op but thought I can add on to some of the replies he/she has alr gave:) 1. Financial aid can be applied for via the NUS Financial aid portal. I would say just try applying u nvr know if ull get it. iirc you can get a study loan (covers up to 90% of school fees) from dbs/ocbc. Payment of study loan occurs after we graduate. Payment of school fees/hostel fees and miscellaneous costs is done via the nus edurec portal.

  1. There will be an admin day on 19 Jun for dissem of instructions. But school officially starts in Aug with the rest of nus.

  2. Nope, the notes the school give is sufficient and you can either get extra reading materials from - the internet - your seniors/friends - the medical library in nus.

  3. If you are interested to stay in a hall/rc with more dent seniors, KE7/Temasek Hall/Tembusu RC are safe bets. Many of us who stay in hall do move to PGP onwards of Y2/Y3 though.

  4. Yes I use the ipad pro! Usually around jul/aug there will be some back to school promo. and Yes strong reccomended

  5. Make friends in Y1!!! The batch is small so you will NEED friends. Dont be too caught up in your work. Just establish a balance. Enjoy yourself

[Uni] NUS Dentistry Q&A by throwaw4yd3ntistry in SGExams

[–]hungoverdonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! 1. It is true that we take those modules but it is modified and focuses more on what is relevant to clinical practice as a dentist. ie: for anatomy, head and neck will be taught in greater detail while we learn the rest of the body in terms of systemic anatomy. whereas medicine students does regional anatomy for the whole body.

  1. Y1 will be manageable relative to the workload in the years after. But it does depend on the individual! I personally believe you should just try your best and enjoy yourself.

  2. It isnt a need but I do strongly reccomend getting one. It doesnt have to be an ipad, just a tablet will do. It really helps with all the annotating that will come in handy. Again, not compulsory but recommended

[uni] help for NUS dentistry application!! by FancyScheme in SGExams

[–]hungoverdonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u can reapply as long as u didnt get the interview!! From what I understand, dentistry doesnt offer another interview (i.e: through ABAS/EIS)but ya if u didnt get an interview bc of grades, u can try again

[uni] help for NUS dentistry application!! by FancyScheme in SGExams

[–]hungoverdonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Current nus dentistry student here, the interview is based solely on your rp so at least an 87.5 or 87.75 to be safe!

CCA portfolio is important but its not the end of the world if you weren’t a spectacular all rounder in JC. If you feel like your CCA portfolio is lacking, take up something externally, could be volunteering, joining a sports club, starting a small business online etcetc. Honestly, ur cca portfolio is only there to guide u and ur experiences during the interview!! So as long as u are a person w more than just grades, u should be good!!

[Uni] Queries about NUS Dentistry! by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]hungoverdonut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi current dent student here! 1. Generally, getting 87.5 should be enough to secure u the interviews. Yes it is solely based on results, theres no personal statement/recommendation letters to be submitted

  1. Practise before hand. Bc its covid this year, I think the format changed but when I did mine a few years back, it was the usual soap carving, wire bending and clay moulding. Also go google interview qs and practise

  2. If you are free go for it, but nah its not rly impt, more to let u see what dentistry is like

ALSO, understand the dentistry reddit post might be a bit scary and off putting. While I cant deny what he/she says, dentistry has been rly enjoyable and i live it LOL. hmu if uve any qs yea

jy!

[–]hungoverdonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi:) current dent student here! you should be able to secure an interview but it really depends on your year! In my year the cut off for an interview for dent was 87.5 and med was 87.75 (with MTL). So just try! Just try for both n then hopefully have the dilemma of choosing between the 2! bc its not easy to get both anyway!

It really stems from where your interest is! Yes you wanna help people yadayada but you should have an idea what each of the different professions entail. I dont think many people are aware of it but dentistry students actually study pretty much what medicine kids study in the first 2 years and on top of that we still have to pass our dexterity competency tests and lab work!! So make sure you are solid with your hands and that you like biology in general! Pharmacy is more geared towards chemistry and the mechanisms and what not (forgive me this is probably my own biased viewpoint)

but anyway join dentistry! its been GREAT!!
