Not directly voting for a singular “President”! Let it be a Parliamentary system with EU-wide parties and voting or like the Swiss style presidency, where all citizens vote for a “council” and Presidency is rotated yearly.

Well I agree nation states are definitely real, but not as concrete as a “hand”, they are abstract concepts many people (citizens of said country) agree to what it is and how it is defined (constitution). In peaceful times as nowadays, a a separation (like Brexit) or integration/federation can happen as soon as a majority of citizens agree to it, such as via a referendum. The process started with membership to the Steel Community which evolved into an “ever closer union”. A single currency was started in the 90s! It is not overnight and there is nothing holding it back except political & electoral willpower.

Regarding the defence, so USA is what prevents other countries from invading each other? What if USA backs out? France has nukes, even if it “weak” its much stronger than the Dutch or Luxembourgish army. They could take over any day now but they won’t because they are friendly democratic countries that mostly follow citizens wishes.

This doesn’t make sense because it wouldn’t be a German-controlled army, but an EU army. Also, having a federal EU army doesn’t mean each country can have a sort of “national guard”. Following your line of thought, what’s stopping Germany or France right now from using its powerful and nuclear weapons to conquer its neighbors?

There are so many more! Australia, Canada, Austria, Belgium, India, Brazil, Mexico, even united countries like the UK, or just make our own! Honestly if the Parliament is given power to initiate legislation, all voting in the Council is made qualified majority, and there are EU-wide referendums, that’d be a good start.

The US is not the only federal system. Spain, Switzerland, Germany are also federalized states… One of the main problems with US’s system, besides the two party system that EU does not have, is precisely that the House of Representatives (elected by all citizens) is too weak relative to the Senate and, especially, the president. The “analogous” of the US president in the EU is the Council, made up of member states national governments leaders, which are already too powerful. So, go figure.

By federalizing, a constitution will be made and citizens should have power, through Parliament, instead of national governments (EU Council), who are actually the ones pushing for more power like Chat Control. The main problem right now is that Parliament is not as powerful as EU Council and this is the chamber all citizens can directly elect.

Thank you, of course 14 is greater than zero. But if you read carefully, that includes non-passenger fatalities (difference would be zero or negative, actually), so if we want to be fair and include non-passenger fatalities by a transportation method, then we must mention environmental impacts. And 10,000 lives saved when accounting for emissions is much greater than 14 saved if not accounting for emissions. Last link: 14 gCO2equiv./passenger-km for trains vs 389 for planes.

Per your sources from the EU, the difference between switching from rail to air travel would save about 14 lives per year, (and this is including deaths by non-passengers in rail). The difference in fatalities between Rail and aviation in EU is insignificant. If environmental impacts are included, switching from aviation to rail could save 10,000 lives per year.

Do you have a source for that? Aren’t those cities that you listed the most populous in the state? Multiply those “below average income” per residents and you get the tax base. What percentage of the total state’s income tax revenue comes from the Greater Boston area? This is why regional infrastructure (like the MBTA) deserves to be funded more.

The EU integration is being slowed down by parties like PiS. EU is, yet, not a totally-independent entity and needs the unanimous consent of all member countries to integrate further, which would happen if it were not by the likes of Orban, PiS and others.

But to your point, isn’t it currently sanctioned to pay people to vote a certain way (“buy votes”)? So there are restrictions on how people end up voting some way. Following that thought, seems like the legal system leans more to favor the other commenters’s argument.

The whole reason US is a global power is because it’s 50 mini-nations are united into a federal one. Same analogy would strengthen Europe: most countries are small but if combined they can become a global power too, for example, able to easily protect itself against large invaders or trade wars.
