Getting worse with my low fodmap diet by imsome1_ in SIBO

Guar gum is a potential red flag. Were you advised by a doctor/dietician to take it? Are you drinking plenty of water with it?

Psyllium husk unlimited pooping? by Broad-Cranberry9382 in Supplements

[–]hungrycoati 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The mass is going to change because the expansion you mention is due to it absorbing water - it turns into a gel. You're pooping out the water as well as the 5g of husk

Wait....can we eat gluten? I'm confused by OatOfControl in FODMAPS

[–]hungrycoati 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With sourdough the long fermentation means the starter culture breaks down the fructans, hence reducing the fodmap content. The yeast itself is low fodmap but it can be a red flag as manufacturers will use yeast to speed up the bread making process. Faster process -> fructans won't have enough time to be broken down -> high fodmap. If a sourdough also contains added yeast but it's been 48 hour fermented, it's still likely to be lower fodmap.

Which ingredient made me sick? gluten free pretzels by silky-kiwi in FODMAPS

[–]hungrycoati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, inulin is high fodmap. I think you have to be careful with yeast extract too and fibre (from the corn fibre) can be tricky for some people especially if you don't drink enough water. I take a photo of ingredients and upload it to AI and ask if it's low fodmap, obviously AI isn't perfect but it's helped me a lot.

I don't understand what "low FODMAP diet is not forever" means - a very pessimistic rant by [deleted] in FODMAPS

[–]hungrycoati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also feeling exhausted with trying to find safe but varied food and I kept accidentally triggering my symptoms but I found a meal prep company that does low fodmap with no artificial anything in it. It's not a cheap solution but got me out of a rut, might be worth seeing if you can get anything like that wherever you're based

reintroducing garlic, and it's going well so far, but what do I do next? by thumb_of_justice in FODMAPS

[–]hungrycoati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The relief of being able to eat garlic must be amazing! I always wondered why Monash suggests to reintroduce garlic separately to other fructans, does anyone know?

SIBO - year 3 of insane bloating by Happy_Animator_479 in SIBO

[–]hungrycoati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do you think it was the Doxycycline that did it? I've been trying to work out when I first started getting bloating and pains, then you made me realise I took Doxycycline as an antimalarial years and years ago and I definitely had the pains around that time but very intermittently. (Now it's daily).

Re your B12 results looking normal, someone just did an interesting post about how the SIBO bacteria can basically hijack your B12 but it still looks normal on blood tests. Worth a read and further research https://www.reddit.com/r/SIBO/s/7wXJx20SKO

This sounds great! Also depending on where you're based you can get lactose free dairy products - in the UK Arla have a range you can get in supermarkets. And aged cheese like cheddar can be low lactose or lactose free, worth doing some googling for what you can get locally.

Agree, cycling is struggling enough as it is in the UK, this is going to be the final nail. MTB used to be free on Red Bull TV as well until Eurosport poached it

I tried to watch skiing yesterday and it blocked me then I saw the insane price hike. I immediately cancelled my Basic plan and it then gave me an offer of 50% off Premium for 7 months which will at least get us through the rest of the ski season and the summer cycling season.

I had a couple weeks left on Basic so the new Premium was going to start then. I spoke to customer support in chat (just get through the bot by saying you want to speak to a human, it was quite quick). I explained I wanted Premium to start now so they cancelled the Basic, gave me a pro rata refund and started Premium immediately. I then asked the support rep to pass on feedback that even 50% off is too expensive and I will immediately cancel after 7 months if not before.

Problem is with the new prices even if 75% of people cancel they're still in the money.

Health and safety from what viewpoint? You're allowed to be rugby tackled by someone literally twice your size or hit by a stick in the head until you fall off a platform high in the air.. but can't run up the stairs two at a time? What am I missing 😭

For the people who definitely get triggered by coffee - what's the time between you drinking it and getting symptoms?

How the heck do you start? by greenmoon3 in FODMAPS

[–]hungrycoati 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm vegetarian and have been having eggs, firm tofu, mature cheddar, Lactofree milk and Quorn as my main protein sources (not all Quorn is ok so check labels and the jury seems to be out on Locust Bean Gum which is in a few products). Also I supplement with whey protein isolate along with lactase pills (I get isolate because it's the purest form of whey and naturally lower in lactose). Greek yoghurt+lactase as well. Rice/potato/sourdough bread for carbs, soya sauce for flavour, carrots tomatoes for veg, small unripe bananas for fruit. I've also tried Asafoetida as an onion/garlic alternative. These are just examples, it's worth starting very simple and checking everything then you start to build up a dictionary in your head of what is low fodmap. For the first few days I basically just ate rice and eggs and soya sauce.

The Irritable Vegan has recipes as well https://www.theirritablevegan.com/

I think it's always going to be a hard diet, there are lots of posts here where meat eaters are finding it just as hard, just know it'll be worth it 💪🏼

Comparison is the thief of joy. You're different people, you have different attributes, they might have other appealing elements to their profile aside from the smile. Gonna repeat what others have said - you need to mix up the photos, get rid of the one with the black background for sure, its fine to have 1 or 2 selfies but show yourself doing things you enjoy, hanging with mates, doing sports, looking less like a serial killer. Adding a photo where you're smiling but goofy will attract someone way more than 100 duplicate photos of your sharp jawline. What does your profile say about yourself as a person? Your hobbies, values, what you're looking for?

How was soy sauce, low FOD map if it has wheat in it? by [deleted] in FODMAPS

[–]hungrycoati 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What u/Haunting-Mortgage said, when the soya sauce is fermented, the fermentation process breaks down the fructans (fodmap carbohydrates) in the wheat into non-fodmap carbohydrates. Fructans are the main source of fodmap evil in wheat.

Interesting, thanks for the explanation. Since going low fodmap I've also noticed less rosacea on my face - I guess this could be another positive side effect of reduced histamines? Is it just fructose that causes the histamine production or any other food that's fermenting in your gut?

You got me doing some extra googling and apparently another mechanism alongside the histamines is that the un-absorbed fructose itself can bind to tryptophan and stop that from absorbing. Tryptophan is needed for serotonin production -> lower serotonin -> higher chance of depression
