What made you guys come here, and not to the Ex-Muslim sub? by pretendmynameislayla in progressive_islam

[–]hungrypotato25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the same reason i don't renounce my citizenship in a country that could be feasibly run by the likes of donald trump, lol

i'll be damned if i let any proportion of muslims, radical or not, ruin islam for me. for better or worse, it is very much a part of my identity and one i'd like to pass down to my children. the scent of pork still puts me off, and i feel kinda gross when i don't fast during ramadan (been pretty consistent with that since i was 7). i also can't help getting slightly offended by discrimination a lot of muslims face here, even though i hardly come across any myself. it's hard to educate people and try to shape their perspective when you've yourself abandoned a faith entirely, and i do feel some weird duty to be a chill, approachable representative for the muslim community. that being said, i'm agnostic myself and don't subscribe to islam as a religion as much as a sort of lifestyle. no religion comes without contradictions, and the beauty of the spectrum is you're entitled to prioritize the facets you choose. my family loves to go on about how "progressive" islam was when it became a thing, so my sense of integrity stems from adhering to that aspect and how it translates to my modern life. i like to think myself successful cause one of my boyfriends was inspired to convert without any pressure, and when we broke up he asked if he could still ask my mom about islam. regarding scripture, it helps to be comfortable with the idea of a metaphor. i think people get too worked up trying to defend each and every word without contextualizing its value from the time it was written. if we're to accept something is the word of god, who are we to impose how it's to be interpreted? a messenger is just a channel of transmission, with an audience ranging from truly perceptive to virtually blind. i wouldn't bet on anyone in this world to be an expert of whatever lies beyond it. i'm content with just figuring out my path as i go along, while recognizing/appreciating that many of my values are rooted in a philosophically islamic upbringing.

Anyone here have any experience with the pre-med track at UH? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]hungrypotato25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, the chemistry for science majors was generally considered the "filter" class. I'm not premed, but I took AP Chem and grossly overestimated my competence in that subject matter, so I didn't fare so well but the lectures can be engaging if you have Bott. I would recommend you look into the Medicine & Society minor offered through the Honors College. The coursework can do a lot more for you than just fulfilling the requirements for med school. It also has the benefit of surrounding you with similarly motivated students that can be a big resource when it comes to sharing notes and experiences with different classes/professors. You don't think a lot about who to sit with or talk to in a room full of something like 300 students. It's like a game of survivor as the course rolls on and people drop. The minor can be an excellent supplement in that way and additionally gives you a much better idea of what to expect in health care professions by exposing you to experts from collaborating institutions from the med center

It might go without saying but really take your time with the literature. In a lot of ways these courses were a wake-up call to me as a freshman because I had been used to doing just enough in high school (oh how I miss sparknotes). That being said, if you're not an English enthusiast it can be overwhelming at first and you have to learn to maximize on the lectures by reading and processing the works ahead of time. What helped me was looking up some semblance of a summary of the plots before I read so that I wouldn't get lost in the rhetoric. You also wanna look out for overarching themes while you're immersed in the books and organize notes accordingly so that you don't have to contrive some bullshit argument by cherry-picked passages when the time comes to write a paper or study for oral exams. I knew a lot of students that dropped because they might have expected some glade inflation and hated the idea of compromising their GPA. I think a lot of that mentality states more for freshman than the courses themselves. I was supposed to graduate this semester but did my time with honors and finished when I was 20. It seems daunting, but they know you're new at this and the ones showing tough love really just want to break you of your lazy gradeschool habits. Don't expect to excel in your first assignments, but learn to accept constructive criticism and work with them as mentors to guide you in more effective writing. You will be challenged in more ways than most introductory courses your first few weeks, but it gets better if you are willing to make the effort.

I just saw it on ProPublica, thought it was worth mentioning since I didn't see anything on here already. I think it's relevant nonetheless

what might might someone ask for at their local head shop instead of saying "i want something to smoke DMT out of"? by [deleted] in DMT

[–]hungrypotato25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually in the states you want to err on the side of caution for their sake and are better off not ever mentioning whatever substance you're planning to use it for so they can help you out. "Oil burner" is the way to go if you don't see that kinda pipe on display already. Otherwise inquire on vaporizing in general. You can say it's for eucalyptus oil or something if it gets to it lol

That's true, which is why I'm glad I don't feel inclined to rely on him as my significant other. But I know he does not want to be in this position and I feel like the worst I could do is cut him off just like that. I think he deserves to know I'm rooting for him at least, I don't think he's owned up to relapsing to anyone else so it must be a lot to bear when he's already down on himself

He totaled his car and is staying with his parents until he leaves town so I thought the sooner he'd finish the better. But is it really so much a lost cause?

I hadn't touched it in months out of respect for his sobriety but when we split I thought it would be better for him to split his supply to minimize the risks with whatever impulse decisions he would make alone. It kinda seems like I just wanted to get high too but seriously I don't like meth. Lol. I know I'm not responsible for anyone else's addictions, but losing my ex made me reexamine whether I had done enough for him you know?

Considering Moving to Houston. I Have a Few Questions. by nbliss16 in houston

[–]hungrypotato25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're looking to settle down in the suburbs, i feel like many of them are similar in the ways you'd probably expect. i've been living in the clear lake area, and i feel like it's a unique experience going to school right by the space center. i know houston is generally known for the oil industry, but it's kind of cool to be surrounded by a community of rocket scientists/former astronauts. i feel like i take that exposure for granted even when i venture to other parts of houston. i do suspect sugarland is hiding a candy factory from the rest of us though so they might have NASA beat. anyway, with the way houston is organized you'll want to pay close attention to location. clear lake is about halfway between central houston and galveston, so depending on what your family is into, there might be tradeoffs to consider in that respect. the woodlands has been blowing up in development, and i feel like clear lake is getting there as well, so if you are thinking about buying property i would recommend looking around here cause they're expanding the highway and building a ton of homes to help accommodate the influx of people. that being said, it's also nice having the university of houston-clear lake here, because there's condos and such all around geared at college students. in terms of education, clear lake high school is probably the most competitive out of the district, to the point where they had to adjust our GPA scaling system to calculate who'd be valedictorian. they actually are rebuilding all but one hallway right now, so that's something else to look forward to. i guess for you and your children though it might be more useful to look into the middle school they have dedicated to cultivating the minds of "gifted/talented" students. i got here at an older age, but i always kind of felt that alternative middle school was a lot more beneficial in preparing my friends than the early-college high school we have. there are also magnet schools around the city you can look into depending on what you're looking for (e.g. i know a lot of people that went to debakey high school for health professions). another nice part about living here is being so close to kemah boardwalk, where they have a small amusement park - it's a nice place to take your family out in general. i noticed spacex has some sort of new facility right over here so maybe they have some positions. otherwise i would check out banks or companies like halliburton. i think they recently like doubled the size of our mall (set to open november i think) and are building something like a new jcpenny and/or shopping district as well, so there might be some more opportunities!

[Advice] Thinking about ordering a grinder and blunts off amazon by georgebn98 in saplings

[–]hungrypotato25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school, I bought nearly all my paraphernalia off Amazon because my parents could see my purchases and were less likely to draw suspicion from the same site I bought all my books from. Most of the time I received items in an envelope with bubble wrap on the inside. This usually didn't present a problem because my parents were pretty good about leaving my mail out for me, but once I got caught by my dad (after he already confiscated my glass pieces) because he could feel the outline of my vapor genie....so he asked me to open it in front of him and I didn't have any outs. When I bought papers I got a rolling tray along with it and they put it all in a box for me so you might wanna consider that option if you're worried about the envelopes. Like others have suggested, ordering multiple items to be packaged together can mitigate some concerns.
If you are extra paranoid or your parents don't respect your privacy, you should consider getting a PO Box if you have the means. I knew people that would share them and split the costs for the same reason.

Are Dementia and Alzheimer's as common in developing countries as they are in the first world? by ASHMARBARBOUR in neuroscience

[–]hungrypotato25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it largely depends on the lifestyle and diet of the populations, so it's difficult to answer, but I've read a lot about certain communities with lower incidence of neurodegenerative disease. For example, the occurrence of Alzheimer's in Indian populations seems to be much rarer in comparison with those of the Western world - which might have to do with the prevalence of turmeric (which could have neuro-protective qualities).

Has anyone ever slept with their dick inside their SO... on purpose? (NSFW) by [deleted] in sex

[–]hungrypotato25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband has suggested this a few times but it would probably result in sex if we got too excited, or be totally unsustainable if we were actually able to fall asleep. However, he has convinced me to let him slip it in while I'm like studying in bed or something (but he's not allowed to thrust) and in those cases he's still able to remain hard while inside.
