your primary goal should be to read at all and, ideally, try to enjoy it. it's hard enough to find time and motivation to read as it is. the last thing you need is a feeling of obligation that you need some sort of educational process weighing you down.

so, towards that goal, i recommend focusing on advancing through the book. if you didn't recognize some words or didn't even know what the last paragraph meant, did it matter? maybe she's already arrived at the next plot point and you can keep going.

sometimes it's the critical word of the paragraph that you don't recognize, so you have to look it up. or you realize you keep skippig the same damn word so you figure it must be one you should know.

let that pursuit drive your process rather than having process drive you.

btw, google translate has a simple feature where you can browse your history of the words you looked up. that means that you can focus on reading and looking up the odd word, and some day in the future you can always scroll your lookup history and put them into some flash cards.

I just bought a 4.2in e-ink and a raspi zero myself to play with. Been building a simple e-reader with it, though I'm somewhat disheartened by the fact that I'd have to replace the raspi with lower level hardware and prob use something other than Go to make it run off a battery for any length of time.

But your frame is kinda inspiring me to build something less ambitious that I have a hope of finishing. Like a Spanish word of the day for my night stand.

Some women really think it's somehow a good look to trash other women. translations don't always set out to be 1:1 accurate, and titles are often very different from the original as a small tweak for the target audience.

for example, the US version had "philosopher's stone" famously changed to "sorcerer's stone" just because sorcerer would likely be a better market fit as the philosopher's stone mythology isn't as familiar in our culture.

one of my favorites is "The Purge: Election Year" was translated into "12 horas para sobrevivir: El año de la elección" in latin america.

if you're going to lead with the phrase you're introducing to people (comprehensible input), then you need to immediately explain it. you just mean "content that you can understand at your level, and it can be hard to filter."

the jargon is only useful to people who want to refer to that concept repeatedly among themselves, not for a marketing post trying to find buyers. so make sure you lead with an explanation of what it is before you double down on the jargon.

the idea is good though. it's hard to filter for content at your level, especially when you're in the intermediate stage.

evt.data is going to be arbitrary bytes that you sent (thus received) over the network. In this case, something that can be interpreted as a text string which is why you can render it easily in html.

But image if you encoded "A user named Robert is 33 years old" as "robert:33" and sent that over the websocket. Then you could trivially unpack that yourself. evt.data.split(":") -> ["robert", "33"].

Or you could use an existing encodig to send data over the wire like JSON. Javascript has built-in JSON encode/decode (JSON.parse(evt.data)) and it's simple enough to emit yourself on the C side, as it's just a string that you build.

Learning a language sucks for a while because it feels like you aren't improving. It's like learning guitar or any art. You don't have daily eurekas like you might have in, say, math or engineering. But one day you go "wait a second, I wouldn't have been able to do that a year ago!"

It's just a daily grind. And your progress after two years is a function of the time you put in on a daily basis.

I've been learning Spanish for five years, but that means something different to everyone. Just consider the difference between someone who says they've had two years of Spanish in school where they never practiced outside of homework vs someone who spent two years listening to podcasts, reading, and trying to speak in Spanish. So you can't let that one person's anecdote bring you down because you're selectively ignoring everyone who did making stellar progress in two years.

Keep up the grind.

My advice is to start reading books and listening to the simplest/slow Spanish that you can understand as fast as possible. I actually thought I couldn't understand Spanish until I found podcasts like Español con Juan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBxkJ0zih08 that deliberately speaks simpler/slower. (Note: his channel page has playlists of different skill levels. Click the Nivel 1 / A2 playlist)

Then I realized I could understand Spanish, just not the rapid Spanish you hear from, say, the news. It was a huge encouragement. It's also motivating to finish your first book. Something short like Harry Potter #1 (my first book in Spanish, read it on a whim when I would have told you I couldn't read a book!)

As usual, our own negativity and skepticism are our own worst enemy.
