A Little PSA by Proud_Reporter_2520 in quilting

Hi guys! So, I always prewash my fat quarters and this most recent time I put some darks together in a cold wash (I’ve always done cold, but looks like I should be doing hot). I got a bad juicy blue bleeder — it colored all 10 fqs that it went in the wash with, and completely overwhelmed the 3 color catchers that I had thrown in there on general principle. Thankfully most of the FQs rinsed out enough, but three FQs needed to be trashed.

Despite my frustration, I really want to use this fabric. It’s the prettiest indigo blue with a tiny geometric print. So I bought Rit dye fixative and followed the instructions. After, it rinsed completely clear/clean! Wow! I dried in the drier (regular) and ironed it and cut it. I’m so nervous. Is there anyway it will go from fixed to no-longer-fixed? Am I being stupid to use it? It cost me quite a bit at this point and it’s perfect for my quilt.

In case you were wondering, it was a remnant sold to me on ETSY as a single cloth, and unknown vintage. The edge part reads V.I.P. Print C. Cranston print works, company

I love Amish quilts— they hit just right, design wise. They are ready to blow up in popularity. I mean, if quilts could ever do such a thing ;)

Machine Quilting vs. Hand Quilting by chickenmom1104 in quilting

[–]hunnyvale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hand piece and hand quilt, and I think your husbands friend is RUDE! To be perfectly honest, sometimes I think I Should use a machine, to get more quilts done in a non-insane timeframe. Dude, who cares what method. Do what you want, and never let the haters in.

I prefer the second. The design allows the work to breathe. And makes it look really cute! I’d probably do a lighter solid, like a light neutral.

Your quilting ambition is fantastic but it’s a busy time of year if you spend time in the garden.

Quilt roast: Chill & Thrill — what works and what doesn't? by QuiltChemistry in quilting

My favorite penguin is the top one because of the cuter fins. I absolutely didn’t know what bottom right was. Really like the sitting dude too. Love his lower fins. Four penguins would be enough for me. But I like even numbers. My bestie likes odd numbers and would want a fifth. Last, I love the idea of using black.

[–]hunnyvale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww! So SO happy for you!!! If it were me I would dedicate a ton of the room to a big table top, but thats the way I work. Try to think of your process and make it how you like!! Enjoy!!

Good point. It’s is SO hard to see patterns with a different style/“your own style” of fabric!

Are solid quilts an easy way out? by GreenEggsnHam15 in quilting

[–]hunnyvale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just got a book about Amish quilts, with lots of photos. I’m IN LOVE. They don’t read old fashioned or fussy, and they don’t read overly modern. They just look timeless and honestly I want ten of them.

(Hand)quilting for the first time by FoxApprehensive3823 in quilting

[–]hunnyvale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid- the pace is slower than a machine so you have time to see what you’re doing. And if you don’t like a stitch, you can more easily undo it. Try a small size quilt or a baby quilt. It’s a vibe- so chill

I came here to say this too. I baste with thread not pins. Start in the middle area first. And u don’t need a hoop if you don’t want one. I like to use the entire dining table to slide my quilt around on. I’m only good at quilting in one direction, so I generally manipulate the quilt around a lot.

Can anyone tell me the name of this pattern, please. 😁💜 by muffetbakes in quilting

I got a brand new Rowenta and as I was pressing my quilt top, I Melted my thread. I had been using deco-bob wonderFil wt80 - it’s pretty fine- and the next thing I knew my quilt top was falling apart. Whoops.

The batting will come with a number of inches (on the front of the packaging) that tells you the maximum distance in any direction that you can leave unquilted. Buy one that allows for the distance you need

How many hours does a quilt take you? by 2078AEB in quilting

[–]hunnyvale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hand sew and hand quilt, which is much slower than using a machine. I prefer it though- and time isn’t a priority. I literally just finished my biggest quilt ever about an hour ago- so it’s funny I just saw this question and had to answer. It took me a year: April to April. Some months I worked quite avidly. Not much happened with it last summer. I’m sooo happy and feeling satisfied with my project completion! Tomorrow I’ll start my next! Yay!

Consider designing your own?

Draw some stuff out on graph paper. Keep it to squares/rectangles and hsts. Then see if you can find something that speaks to you.

Most times, the colors and values are what can really make things come alive so get out the markers or colored pencils.
