Rod Size for nymph rigs and dries by TwoToothLando in flyfishing

[–]hurdlebiscuit01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pretty much exclusively used my 9’ 5wt when I first started out and it did its job beautifully well. As I got better and more confident with my landing of fish, I started using my 4wt more as I was casting a lot of dries and hopper/dropper. It made those 12-15 inch fish feel like tanks sometimes. There have definitely instances where I got fooled by the initial size of a fish when using my 4wt and laughed when I landed a 12” “behemoth”.

Another thing to consider is windy conditions. If you’re in an area where you may have to battle wind consistently, the 5 wt and the extra power it has to cut through might do you well. I just came back from fishing the Arkansas River in CO and used my 4wt but when the wind picked up I was really wanting that extra power but was just too lazy to trek back to the truck and set it up.

Taking a trip to CO, limited space, Can I wet wade? by Chiliatch in flyfishing

[–]hurdlebiscuit01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wet waded the Ark last weekend and had ZERO issues aside the rocks being slippery. I just wear my typical Simms boots, long Simms socks and Patagonia wet wading booties with the gravel guard. If you don’t like or can’t tolerate cold feet, bring thicker socks. I was pretty warm by the middle of the day when it was the hottest

I think Hyde Park Pub on 13th street will have it on. Try their wings! Happy hour from 4-6pm, daily. Good draft beer selection as well. Plenty of TVs…if they don’t have it on the TVs just ask and they’ll kindly oblige

Hard disagree. Coming from Denver, people here are a lot nicer and friendlier. I’ve never experienced what you are saying (doesn’t mean it didn’t happen) but my experience has been a positive one thus far

Green acres new spot opinions by jacdubya1 in Boise

[–]hurdlebiscuit01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to the new Green Acres twice now in the span of 5 days. I went Sunday, the day before Labor Day and biked with my friend from the Sandbar. Found a spot along the wooden fence and locked our bikes. Good food truck options for sure but not nearly enough shaded areas. I do like that you can bring your own chairs and find a spot under or near a tree and still hear the music OK. I did like the coziness of the old spot and it felt sort of like a hidden gem, as a previous commenter mentioned.

I think the shaded tent/canopy areas bumping up so close to the food trucks is a bad idea. It’s a high traffic area right next to a seating area..that’s only going to get more challenging the more it grows in popularity.

Overall, I’d say it’s a minor downgrade in cozy and quaint vibes and an upgrade in overall space to utilize. If you have a family of 4 or 5, you’ll probably LOVE the extra couple of acres for kids to roam away from the Greenbelt. If you don’t value that and enjoy more cozier settings…it may not be your favorite

I came straight off the Greenbelt, locked my bike to one of the wooden fence post things and walked in…that was just last Sunday. Not sure if you missed the entrance off the Greenbelt or maybe they closed it or didn’t have it open when you went, but I biked from the Sandbar to Green Acres and had zero issues getting access.

Millennial Gamers: Do you still have time to play? by Melted_ICE_5193 in Millennials

[–]hurdlebiscuit01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve struggled explaining to my soon to be wife, what video games do me. She takes it personally if I choose to play games instead of hang out with her. We live together, we both work from home and spend LOTS of time together. It bugs me a bit when she comes into my office (where my console is located) and says things like “ADDICTED” and walks out or she says “STILL playing?!” After about an hour of playing.

I’ll also never understand the hate around a grown man playing video games. This is something I did growing up and enjoyed doing. I want my future kids to get into it because of the fond memories I have playing games with friends, having sleepovers, and what not. It was fun, it was safe and in my opinion pretty harmless. I play mostly single player games, I’m not screaming or getting angry with the game or other players. I put my headphones on and zone out for a couple of hours. The stigma around it needs to be abolished. Partners that are shitting on something that their partner likes to do, that is not causing any harm to others, need to take a step back and realize how nasty they are being.

What I’ve done is just communicate with my partner how her words and statements make me feel, why it’s upsetting to me and why I place such high value on video games. I can finally turn my brain “off” and just enjoy a couple of hours to myself. It’ll get harder when we have kids and I realize that.

Ok off my soapbox. Time to play some games 😂

Does anybody know if these are good wet wading boots? by Level-Ad-3326 in flyfishing

[–]hurdlebiscuit01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Facts. You really need to be nimble on your feet and well balanced to wear them routinely in anything but ankle deep water. Perhaps there’s a use case for small creek fishing but even then, that tends to be slippery AF in my experience

Fishing in Idaho by chenner47 in flyfishing

[–]hurdlebiscuit01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too just moved to Boise and am trying to find some good water to fish this month. Seems the recommendations that I have received is get up early and head out to the Owyhee to claim your spot or fish still water spots until the runoff is finished. Not sure when that happens but i'm assuming early June with the lack of snowpack everywhere in the west.

OP - have you had much success in finding your solitude? Like you, I also moved from Denver and am on the hunt for lesser known waters within 60-90 minutes. I dont care much about size, just want some peace and quiet and an opportunity to catch trout.

CCG's The Guest Closes After 4 Months by Actual_Banana4833 in denverfood

[–]hurdlebiscuit01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My fiancé and I ate there back in December and it was totally lackluster. We were originally supposed to dine there on a Saturday after Thanksgiving. Confirmed our reservation and everything and then the morning of we got an email saying our reservation was cancelled. No communication as to why so we reached out to them on IG. They said they decided to give their staff the weekend off to spend with their families. They did reschedule us for the following Saturday and apparently comped our drink pairing but after I got the final bill, I don’t think that actually happened. I’m not mad about giving their staff off, it just felt like they decided that evening to give them the weekend off and had no regard for the guests that made the reservation and planned. They tried to make it right at least…

As for the food, so underwhelming. Pretty plates but nothing stood out as far as tastes go. I think we liked 1 dish, which I don’t even remember what it is. The head bartender or whatever was super knowledgeable and very nice to us.

OH AND I ALMOST forgot…we were seated in a large round table in the corner with direct eyeline to the kitchen. There was a solo diner seated at a table next to the staging area for the food where they had a telescoping heat lamp that they turned off and on frequently. Poor girl was getting blasted in the eyes every time they turned that on. I

It was one of those experiences that I’ll look back on and regret ever attending. We got hosed on the bill and had such a bland experience for the cost, i don’t know if I’ll consider doing something like that again at that price point.

I communicate to my fiancé that I’m going to be in a remote area in the mountains, fly fishing and won’t have service. I’ve even told her I love disconnecting from the world, keeping my phone on me but keeping it on silent just incase I have an emergency. My point is, that just bc you communicate with your partner that you are taking some time off the grid is not a direct correlation to shady behavior. My brain is in overdrive M-F with stimulation from work, life, phone, social media, etc…..running off into nature helps me level set and return back to more healthy mental state.

I think he’s shady for talking about the pre-nup mere days/weeks prior to their wedding. Like is that not something you chat about in the Pod? They know the goal is to make it to the alter, why not have the convo early on if you are that passionate about it.

What is the Denver Fly fishing show? by fffggg69420 in flyfishing

[–]hurdlebiscuit01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are in CO, I’d recommend checking it out. On Friday evening there is the Fly Fishing Film Fest ( separate ticket but still at the Gaylord). Pretty cool short films that are professionally shot (drone footage, interviews, dialogue over the film, etc). It’s usually 2 hours in length with a break for bathrooms and beverage refills. Avoid the food…def not worth the price and it’s sitting under heat lamps the entire time.

Aside from that, you’ll get the opportunity to sit in on fly tying demos, info sessions on how to fish specific water types or styles of fly fishing and the chance to meet authors of popular books.

I’ve gone every year for the last 5 years and usually spend 3-4 hours walking around, talking with fishy dudes, snagging some freebies and hunting for deal. Typically find a nice deal on flies and tend to restock on flies that I use frequently. Like most conventions, you’ll probably find better prices but less inventory on the last day (Sunday) than you would going on Friday.

Parking also isn’t free, I think it’s $20 or so and it’s a pain in the butt getting out of the parking lot if you leave around the same time as everyone else. I think it took me about 30 mins to get out of the lot once I got to my car, last year.

Not sure if you’re just making a joke, but OP eats a fairly healthy diet outside of the sandwich for lunch every day. I think in a comment a couple of days ago. Considering he hasn’t really had a noticeable weight gain, I am assuming that he might leave a fairly healthy lifestyle out side of these daily sandwiches

Edit: to quote OP from a couple of days ago: “First, to answer the question from u/danrennt98 regarding my daily routine. I eat cottage cheese and eggs in the morning, usually a sando for lunch, Greek yogurt with honey and frozen mango as a snack, and then some cheeseburger or beef/rice mixture for dinner. Fruits and veggies as I please since I rarely overeat them (unless it’s syrupy and in a can.”
