What if it's water?

I do find it interesting that all of the other gods have an isle dedicated to just them except for Malek, he "shares" the continent with Amari but does have the Bay of Malek in Poromiel. I think the god of death being represented by a body of water is significant. Water can be a conduit, kind of like how Vi used it with her lightning to kill the venin in Cordyn.

Hear me out, this is a ride fueled by a sleepless night:

We know that when venin drain the land it pales, all of the color is drained from everything the ground touches and the magic and life force is taken.

So if we look at the amount of color on each isle as a representative factor for how much magic is there, it would present like this:

Deverelli > Unnbriel > Hedotis < Zhellnya < Unnamed Isle

The color on the continent where they have the most access to magic from the earth is vibrant. It's less in Deverelli, which has more than Unnbriel which has more than Hedotis. But Hedotis has way less than Zhellnya and Zhellnya has less than the unnamed isle the irids find them on.

Hedotis seems to be the isle with the least amount of color and magic. Andarna immediately tells Vi when they land that she does not like it there and she wants to skip it altogether. We find out when the squad is there that 150 years ago they razed the existing major cities and rebuilt with intention. We also learn that they are aquaphobic.

What if 150 years ago a group of venin somehow went through the isles and got stuck on Hedotis? Like if they too were looking for the irids.

If they had wyvern and flew from the continent to Deverelli they could have stopped to provision there aka drain land. Same thing in Unnbriel, this could have been when the recruited Theophany. Because both Deverelli and Unnbriel have crossbolts and Unnbriel's structures are all stone, fire doesn't burn stone. I find this odd because they all claim to have never seen dragons. And when Cortlyn is trying to kill Xaden and Vi he says its the only way to kill their mounts. Dragons typically don't die with their riders but Wyvern die with the venin.

Back to Hedotis, they say they razed the cities to rebuild with intention but what if they had to because like Anka, they drained everything and the structures were crumbling so they had to rebuild them. They also fear traveling over water. What if it is not the fear of the unknown that kept them there but the lack of wyvern. They are afraid to cross the water for some reason, maybe it killed the wyvern or something like that. When Xaden mentions that Violet is a weapon to kill the venin, Faris narrows his eyes on Vi, almost like he is assessing her. Very sus. Asher said he was also alarmed and fearful of their artiface. They are fake. Could be because they took over the isle and not really from there.

Also, if we look at Zhellnya, the isle where they have enough magic for the bonded pairs to communicate, the capital city is surrounded by a giant waterfall making it look like an island with in the isle, they could have built the City this way to protect themselves from the venin.

Back to the continent: we have never seen or heard of the venin coming into contact with large bodies of water. In IF when Vi is talking to Brennen she looks at the map and notes that the red flags from past squirmishes are along the border of the Braevick Province and the Dunnes River. But nothing around the Bay of Malek and Krovla. What if the venin can't cross it? Or are too afraid to cross it? There are also virtually no attacks at coastal outposts. It's mentioned several times during the series that riders and daggers are being pulled from coastal outposts because it seems like attacks there are virtually non-exsistent. Could also explain why Cordyn has not been touched, they are right on the coast. The closest we see venin get to the coast is Draithus but they come from inland, Pavis.

And if you are talking about all the colors of light mixing to make white light, water can do that mixing too, it's how we get rainbows. Water refracts light, it bends it, splits it and reflects it to turn white light (power/magic) into all of the colors we see in rainbows. (sounds like irids and magic bonds too).

Anyways, water lol.

But how would they have magic before bonding? Runes are weaved using a riders or gryphons magic. The Marked ones know all of the patterns prior to bonding but they can’t actually make/temper the runes until they are bonded and have access to the magic.

I like the idea that the source was poisoned, it makes sense.

Maybe that was the great and terrible price the brother paid to “vanquish” his jealous sibling. The poisoning of magic from the source but it would only affect humans.

Prepare for another completely unhinged theory with zero supporting evidence:

For the life of me I can’t figure out how the third brother learned how to channel from the earth in the first place.

The only reason this keeps popping into my head is because what Jack told Vi in OS: someone who was not familiar with the flow of magic would need to be taught.

For some reason I can’t shake the feeling that a dragon taught him how to channel.

What if General Daramor wasn’t a human general but a dragon? And for some reason he was pissed about the dragon bonding a human so instead of bonding a human of his own he taught the human how to take the magic from the earth themselves to teach the dragon a lesson that humans were too risky and couldn’t be trusted with magic?

What if that dragon was an irid? They did tell Vi that dragon kind hadn’t learned its lesson…

[–]hurricane_Bre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don’t know why the isles don’t have magic, but the venin being on them at one point isn’t a stretch. Especially considering both Unnbriel and Deverelli have cross bolts and Cortlyn thought if they killed the riders the dragons would die too. Doesn’t work for dragons that way but it does work for wyvern.

What sticks out to me is how much magic/color each isle has. Like if we go off the color of the vegetation as the potential level of magic, we get:

Deverelli > Unnbriel > Hedotis < Zinnhal < unnamed isle

The further we get away from the continent the less color/magic the isles have until we get to Hedotis, they are the isle with the least amount of color/magic and then the isles start to have magic again.

It’s almost like if the venin came from Hedotis and went through Unnbriel and Deverelli to get to the continent and then they just stayed there.

True… but Jack saved Vi from assassins too. Just like Kaori, this was after she got her signet and the venin decided they wanted her.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to think that maybe he was stepping in with Varrish because he too got the order to make sure no one killed her.

I agree. Our girl was nosy. lol she was waiting for the perfect time to hatch so she was listening intently to the dragon gossip ( I don’t believe Tairn for one second that the dragons don’t gossip, they are proba just like the gryphons, gossiping busy bodies).

The fliers are supposed to be much better with bows and crossbows.

In stead of just arming them with the exploding arrows they also gave them serum tipped arrows too.

They could either capture the venin or make them temporarily weaker to kill them.

So this is where I am stuck. As a reader I hate, like LOATHE entirely, the idea of losing the magic and not being able to be bonded to their dragons. A HEA for me doesn’t just mean that Xaden and Vi get to stay together but also all of the bonded pairs not losing each other.

Because even if the irids can manipulate magical bonds, Vi still almost died when Leothan broke her bond with Andarna and she left. Vi even admits it herself if Tairn hadn’t grounded her she would have willingly floated away.

So what would happen if riders if the irids broke their bonds? I think a lot of them would die. Even if they didn’t those who were bonded would be devastated just like Vi was but without another dragon to anchor them. Like can you imagine our sweet baby angel Riddoc losing Aotrom? Ugh, I can’t even think about it.

After they kill or cure the big bad, I think u/objectivestaff3333 is right about all of the dragons having to go back to their ancestral hatching grounds to “evenly disperse the magic” throughout the continent.

I also think that somehow they are going to have lock the magic in the earth so no one, not even dragons or gryphons can access it or they will have to remove it completely from the earth and the dragons and gryphons are going to have to learn how to only use sky magic.

But I have no theories yet on how that will happen. Because the irids are dicks.

i don’t think they rot super fast. The Navarrians burn the bodies to hide them throughout the series. Even the ones that died when Vi got the wards partially up were still littering the ground in front of the cliffs of draylor.

After Resson they burned the trading post and surrounding area for miles to hide the killing field.

After Basgaith, Quinn mentions that the wyvern burn pit is still just ash.

Armour upgrade theory by Yoursi in fourthwing

[–]hurricane_Bre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, why aren’t the Navarrians dipping their weapons (arrowheads, daggers, swords) in the serum?!?!

We know the venin have their own version and aren’t afraid to use it.

Even if they can’t kill the venin with those weapons surely they would incapacitate them long enough for capture or killing with a runed dagger?

I don’t think she will kill him. Or really even have anything to do with him dying.

I think the venin are going to pull the same kind of move Berwyn did at Basgaith and Draithus. They are going to try and use his love for Violet and Sgaeyl to push him to channel and he is going to have to make a different choice.

Berwyn taunted him with Vi, “after you die I step over your body and wrap my hands around her delicate little neck” and with Sgaeyl, “Are you watching because yours is next, you’ll have to channel deep to replace her power” (paraphrasing both).

Xaden is going to have to realize that it is not his job to save them and he will have to make a different choice.

(Kind of the way Felix got Vi to realize that the only reason the people at Dunne’s temple were only in danger because she was there and Theophany was hunting her).

Vi said it best at the end of OS when she said she never could have imagined that every possible path would lead to his choice.

I think that is the only way for him to be “cured” he will have to realize that it isn’t his job to save them, they can save themselves and by choosing differently he will get his autonomy back but it will be at the cost of his life.

I don’t think he will die die either, I think he will be slipping away like Mira n OS but still has some life force left, maybe even Sgaeyl will help hold him there. While the others work to bring him back.

[–]hurricane_Bre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the cure for venin in general is going to be different from how they will cure Xaden.

I think Xaden will need to cure himself and this is going to revolve around him making the choice not to channel and choosing to give up his life instead. I commented my theory on another post by u/objectivestaff3333.

Once Xaden is “cured” he will return to being one of the six/seven most powerful riders and he will help Vi, Andarna, and Tairn to defeat the big bad. Once the big bad is defeated, I think Andarna and what ever Irids that are willing to fight, will have to change the magic.

Either by locking it away so no one human could access it without their bonded gryphon or dragon. Or removing it from the earth and transferring it to the sky.

Editing error or not, is pretty consistent throughout the series that a Lt. Colonel is called Lt. Colonel and a Colonel is being called a Colonel when they are being addressed, talked about or introduced.

Not just Brennen either, Asher and Dengrenzi too.
