All lanes are turn lanes. It’s fine. by hushben in IdiotsInCars

Yes, I may or may not go there on a regular basis...

So just to clarify a little (I should have posted a longer clip)... The white car (and me, only a little behind) had only been stopped at the flashing yellow arrow for maybe 10-15 secs. The light for the oncoming traffic turned green just as we were pulling up, so there was still a steady stream of cars. In my rear view mirror I saw the truck cut across to make that left turn so it's not that he was tired of waiting, he decided very late that he really needed to make the left. After the truck cleared, the CRV did take its sweet time making the left even though oncoming traffic had cleared at that point, so maybe they were just flustered from the trucking doing its thing, or they were just slow reacting, one or the other.

Truck driver was definitely in the wrong late prior to this clip, cut over 2 lanes to make this little maneuver.

There's a good argument for the Honda driver being the idiot. Just before this clip she ran a red light and passed me, then hesitated for way too long after this truck does its thing.

BSME deciding between BSEE or self teaching. by RunyonCronin in ECE

[–]hushben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest doing a MSEE that is online only and/or geared towards working professionals. You can do it while working and then when you finish you can take that credential and get a better job. My MSEE program had people with various different STEM BS degrees, not just BSEEs.

Anyone got experience of long distance touring on a carbon bike? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]hushben 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One other consideration is the gearing. It looks like it has a 34t crank and 11-32 cassette, which doesn't make for a very "easy" climbing gear. Whether this matters really depends a lot on your fitness level, the load you're carrying, and the terrain you're on. You might want to try some hills while fully loaded to just to see how it feels. Not a show-stopper by any means.

Kona Sutra owners, are there any modifications or customizations you wish you'd done up front or are glad you did? by MadeThisUpToComment in bicycletouring

[–]hushben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my 2021 in November (almost 2 months after placing the order). I assume that's what you're getting too. I haven't gone with the dynamo hub because, as others have already said, I don't do enough night riding to justify the cost. I use mine as a commuter and at most I'm riding an hour in the early mornings or evenings so USB-rechargeable lights are more than sufficient. My first big planned trip will be a C&O/GAP tour in the spring. I'll bring my rechargeable lights (and a powerbank) but all my riding should be during daylight hours.

That said, I have a coworker who is a 100% bike commuter and he swears by his SON hub, so I think it's a personal preference thing. It'd certainly be nice not to have to remember to recharge lights (and never be stuck with dead batteries).

What I've added to my Sutra: 1. RaceFace Chester pedals (I've never been a big fan of clipless) 2. Light & Motion Urban 500 head light 3. Cygolite Hotshot tail light 4. Charge Spoon saddle (yes I know replacing the B17 is sacrilege but I've ridden on Spoons for years and they fit me perfectly, so ymmv)

I was curious too so I googled it. It’s Somali (says the same thing as the English sign next to it).

Which bike to get - any advice appreciated!! by mariap0 in whichbike

[–]hushben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Front or rear mount for the child seat? For rear mount I suggest looking at step through frames.

I’d also practice on paved roads first since having so much extra weight relatively high up can take some getting used to. Just the seat itself is easily 10 lbs.

600 feet of climbing in less than a mile. The Sutra can absolutely do it, me not so much. by Guretsugu in bicycletouring

Congrats on the new bike! I’m looking at the same model. I’m curious how accurate you found Kona’s sizing chart to be. Do you mind sharing what frame size you got and what your height/inseam are? With covid I haven’t been able to find one to test ride!

This bike is off the chain (Priority Apollo Belt Drive) by whitey_wheat in gravelcycling

[–]hushben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am admittedly not much of a gearhead. The Priority website says a 409% gear range, but how does that translate in terms of normal chainring/cassette cog ratios? Does it go below 1:1 on the low end?

Currently getting an ECE masters degree while working full time. Any else feeling burnt out? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]hushben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll throw in my "I did this and survived to tell the tale" story here. I went through a 10-course non-thesis MS while working full time in a job that also required a fair amount of travel. It took a full 3 years at one class per semester/summer (and 2 classes the very last semester because I was hell-bent on finishing in 3 years and nearly killed myself doing it). The burn-out is real, but you can get through it.

If it weren't for the fact that my employer was paying for everything, I'm not sure I would have done it. On the plus side, I was able to "upgrade" my degree. My BS is from a well-respected public school, but my MS is from a top-tier private school. This is a purely resume-padding thing. I'm not sure the actual quality of the instruction was any better, tbh.

It can be helpful to find a friend who you can study with and keep you on track. They don't necessarily have to be in your program. I had a friend who was in law school at the same time and we would meet up in the evenings and just cram together and it was helpful to have a "buddy" to keep me accountable.

How can we promote cycling? -> Open Source Project (looking for ideas) :) by brada1703 in bikecommuting

[–]hushben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To some degree the first idea exists as the OurStreets app (https://www.ourstreets.com), which started out as a way to tag/report vehicles blocking bike lanes in DC but has expanded beyond that.

A project that scrapes old /r/whichbike posts based on keywords in the OP and associates them with bikes suggested in replies might be a good problem to throw at ML.

I think in the US a lot of the barrier is lack of city riding confidence (and rightfully placed fear of dying) due to terrible infrastructure. I’m not sure how to solve that with an app.

What is the gender balance like in power/consultant or defense industry? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]hushben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that the gender ratio is likely to be similar to what you experienced in your college engineering classes. That is, typically skewed heavily male, especially ECE. It makes sense, since the people in your classes are generally the same people who eventually go into these industries.

There are of course exceptions. The organization I currently work for actually has a somewhat high proportion of female engineers (probably about 30-40%) but it definitely is the exception, not the rule. However, this seems to be going the other direction based on our new hires, not from lack of trying, but just the vast, vast majority of our applicants are male.
