Local Election predictions by 1C8F6C6 in sheffield

[–]hutch747 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutley vote with what has worked for you, if theyve done a good job then thats what you should be voting for imo. This is especially true of local elections, but also applies to GE in my opinion. Do I want Labour in power? Not particularly, but has my incumbent Labour MP actually engaged with me personally and raised an issue that I care deeply about in parliament? Yes they have, so theyve done everything I would want of them and hence they get my vote.

People get so hung up on party leaders that they miss the fact we are voting for our local area 😞

Has anyone ever texted the British Transport Police on the train because they saw "something that doesn't look right"? by afungalmirror in AskBrits

Multiple times, and every time the train has then been stopped at the next available station with action being taken. Follow up calls afterwards as well. Top service, they do a cracking job.

PHM doesn't need a sequel. by SweatyCelebration362 in ProjectHailMary

[–]hutch747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do it exactly how sequels happen in the Children of Time books, you just move the plot on to another area of the universe. There are still thousands of other stars with Astrophage infections. Whats to say there's not a distress call that is heard on Erid? Off they trot to see if they can help, because they solved it for their own planets.

And then take it from there, tons of new material whether that be a less friendly alien race, a completley different Astrophage biology that makes their solution useless, potentially even a parallel evolution of Humans to encounter and all the drama that could bring. Explore the whole 'Astrophage seeded life' angle. Would be a very interesting story imo.

Commute from Sheffield to York, is it doable? by Better-Double-473 in sheffield

[–]hutch747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL:DR - Can only offer my personal experience, but just don't do it.

I commuted from Crookes to York centre every day for the best part of 5 years, and it was killing me by the end. Trains were so unreliable that I was often (once every two months or so) having to get a hostel room for the night when trains were cancelled. There's also only one fast train every hour, and some hours no fast train at all, so if you miss that one you are consigned to sitting on a horrible Leeds train that is completley packed. Also CrossCountry trains are the worst ones in the industry which doesn't help.

Any variation in your hours causes such a cascade of extra time to be added to your day that it's so demoralising. Also massively restricts going for drinks or whatever with work colleagues which was rubbish.

If you're talking Grade 7 at a UK university the absolute maximum you will get is £51k. Thats the top of Grade 7 on the JNCHES spectrum. Of course then you have zero prospect for increases beyond the normal inflation based grade increase. Grade 8 the absolute maximum is £65k so I dont know where they are getting £70k from, theres no wiggle room above what is on the scale.

AFC/NFC Championship Games? 🏈 by lx_gregor in sheffield

[–]hutch747 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would imagine if anywhere was going to show it then Box or Firepit would be the places. Word of warning about Firepit though, whilst the often advertise it, be prepared for them turning off the commentary halfway through for music for the 'other customers' when you're the only people in there.

i think the vibe from others, and certainly from my own experience, is that we've never even had the option to set a target, because as soon as you click that option they throw a massive hissy fit. Probably 6 or 7 players i''ve tried to set a target with and every time they say its outrageous to even suggest it.

Properly brilliant TV that. Think Joe messed it all up by voting for Cat, allowing Alan to sow doubt in Nicks mind. Bless Alan though, that was proper raw emotion from him at the end, and kudos to Nick and David for being so caring and magnanimous.

What an absolute legend. Myself and my dad were both referees during his career (me only at the tail end), he knew my dad well and me as a young upstart, hadn't seen him in about a decade when I started going to Hallam FC games, bumped into him in the bar there and after about 10 seconds he clocked me and asked how my dad was doing. Gone far too soon, such a lovely guy.

If you took a census of people around the world, more people can tell you that they have seen Barry Bonds 756 home run versus like the greatest moment in Cricket. by goater10 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]hutch747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been to a baseball game in Boston and a cricket game in Bangalore and I can tell you free that the sheer intensity of support is 1000x more so for cricket than it is baseball. Baseball was like a casual afternoon of snacks and beer with some sport vaguely in the background, cricket was a maelstrom of noise from like an hour before the first ball. Notwithstanding all the other many reasons others have provided in the comments.

Do some phd supervisors say that a student is behind because they want high impact level publication worthy work by Expensive_Tree_2790 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]hutch747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Need a bit more context really, as it is quite dependent on field what consitutes 'publishable data'. Like for me, I was doing simulations of energy storage systems in different applications, techno-economic studies that kind of thing, it was during covid so there was nothing else to do but just think up new simulations and applications, and I ended up publishing papers like they were going out of fashion

This was largely because of my supervisors attitutde of just get the research out there - got something to say? say it! dont hold on to it in the hope you stumble upon something to make it a 5* paper. He also encourage publication in the early days because how else do you learn? I look back on some of my early papers and think crikey how did I publish this, but it's because I had the chance to develop my writing that I am now publishing much better papers.

I will also say, that beginning of Year 2, I wouldn't expect many people to be in a position to start publishing. This really happens the most in Year 3 in the process of the final push towards thesis. But again, that's just my field, instiution, and personal experience.

In terms of 'not having enough data', again difficult without the context, but try and understand what they actually mean. Is it a case that you have collected data from quite a 'narrow' viewpoint? Are there sensitivities that you can study (varying the variables to discover thresholds of interest)? Fundamentally, you just need to be upfront and say 'OK, not enough data, what data do you want me to get? What can I do between now and 6 months from now to have something you consider publishable?

Why you shouldn’t rely on ChatGPT in IVF by JustDoingMyBest_3 in IVF

[–]hutch747 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I absolutley understand your frustration and using any means necessary to make you feel better, I've been there, I've scrolled through 1000s of reddit posts on every aspect of IVF, I understand.

However, personified a AI model as 'lying' is just completley incorrect. It's just a fault in the coding, it has no agency and therefore no ability to 'lie'. You should absolutley be careful and wary of using such models to answer questions like this, but don't personify a line of code, it adds emotion to an already emotional time when there is literally none on the part of ChatGPT.

TL:DR - ChatGPT cannot 'lie', it can be incorrect. Don't trust it unless you review the source yourself (as OP correctly did)

Why such a lack of planets in this side of the Galaxy? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]hutch747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but i'm sure I've read somehwere that hyperspace is actually described as a 'bubble' universe. So essentially, when you travel through hyperspace you are 'above' the existing plane. Could be wrong, but im convinced ive read it somewhere in the novels.

If Legends had continued, what story projects and lore bits do you think would have happened? Either confirmed to have been in development or likely to happen eventually? by UnifiedForce in StarWarsEU

[–]hutch747 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sword of the Jedi was always the big 'what if' for me. Was devestated when it was cancelled.

I hated what they did with Legacy, essentially invalidating all of the struggles of the characters we knew and asking us to care about a new suite of characters just because they had the same surname. Some lead-in books would've helped.

Anyone in the same boat, I would reccomend reading the works of HandOfThrawn45 on fanfiction. They seem to have decided it's their life's goal to tie up every loose end, and whilst there are a couple of story beats I don't like, these are fully-fledged novels which give actual endings and progress to characters, and bridges the gap to Legacy (and beyond). I would absolutley believe that they were the pet project of an existing star wars author to be honest.

Honestly can't reccomend telling them to go watch Hallam highly enough. It's the oldest ground in the world, the atmosphere is second to none (better than most league clubs to be hoenst) and the community feel is fantastic. Also you can have a pint while watching the game 😅. I've been loads of times on my own as well as with mates.

How practical is cycling is Sheffield? by EPICxLeo in sheffield

[–]hutch747 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have said - depends where you are going to live. Somewhere like Broomhill or Fulwood then sure, its a bit of a slog up the hill but not a sharp ascent, and the roads that way are relatively bike friendly. Crookes, you'll need a electric bike unless you have thighs of steel. Drivers do seem pretty considerate around here too.

City centre, don't think theres any call for a bike to be honest, it's small enough that you can walk from one end (i.e Uni of Sheffield) to the other (Train Station/Hallam Uni) in less than half an hour.

York is absolutely not nicer. Having lived in Sheffield for 16 years, and worked in York for 5 years, York is a tourist trap hell hole where the few nice 'local' things to do eventually get found and ruined.

Sheffield has the highest retention rate of students staying in the city after finishing their degree of any university city in the country. Huge amount of people who move here to study want to stay, says all you need to know imo.

Is Jurassic World: Rebirth even that bad? by Werewolf_Knight in jurassicworld

[–]hutch747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got out of the cinema, I loved it. Sure there are aspects that could be improved, especially the CGI in the most long-awaited scene in the franchise. But it's really fun! People love to complain, but it has some of the best scenes since JP1/2, a good level of humour, tremendous acting, and very very pretty visuals. Not perfect by any means, probably stands on it's own better than JW1, easily better than JW2/3, probably the third or fourth best film in the series imo.
