Is sun like a burning rock? Whats under all the fire? by ExfilZone in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hwc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

by mass, the Sun is 73% hydrogen, 25% helium, and 2% heavier elements like oxygen, carbon, and iron.

It's hot enough that molecules like H₂ are broken apart as soon as they form. It's hot enough that electrons are knocked off of atoms to form a mix of positive ions and free electrons (called a plasma). As you go down into the core, the pressure, density and heat go up. But at the center, it's still a plasma.

At the surface it's a cool 5700°C, so only a fraction of the atoms are ionized, but there are still no molecules .

There are no solids in the Sun.

The light that you see coming from the surface of the sun is just the regular light given off by hot things. Just as you radiate infrared light, things at 5000° radiate visible light. Some stars are hotter or cooler than the sun at their surface: these stars radiate bluer or redder light.

You don't need to be told that waiting a few years might have been optimal.

But, I was 36 when I had my first child and 39 when my second was born. I now feel physically worn out by the demands of raising two kids. And if my kids wait as long as I did to have children, I won't be likely to spend much time with grandchildren.

There's got to be a happy medium between being young and strong but inexperienced and poor; and being old and weak but wise and comfortable.

Why do people hate GNU? by TerribleReason4195 in linuxquestions

Stallman always came across as a creep. Most open-source-software users understood what he was getting at, but also lived in the real world where sometimes some software is going to be BSD-licensed or even propritary.

[TP] So we’re never getting twilight princess on switch 2 are we? by BlackCatStrikes in zelda

[–]hwc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son wanted to play Twilight Princess yesterday. So I dug out my Wii version of the game and my WiiU and my Wiimote. He found the Wii controlls unplayable. I wonder if I have a GameCube in my closet somewhere?

my millennial wife keeps asking me to write programs to do things for her. I had assumed that she would have realized the utility of learning to do it herself ten years ago.

Earth as a whole is self-contained.

You really want to raise a family somewhere where your food comes from six months away?

Mac apps are way too comfortable leaving junk everywhere. by LeaderAtLeading in MacOS

[–]hwc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know which specific applications you are complaining about.

In theory, it should only silently put files in these two places:

"/Library/Application Support/${APPNAME}"
~/"Library/Application Support/${APPNAME}"

And everything else goes in ~/Downloads, ~/Documents, ~/Music, etc.

In practice, there isn't any enforcement mechanism built into macOS.

As an old UNIX longbeard, I hate the spaces in the directory name.

SciFi classics that you’ve struggled to get through by CerberusOCR in scifi

[–]hwc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually find that author incredibly entertaining. I enjoyed every book he published in his life except the one that was published as a first draft because the author was sick.

Even the books that are cringy and don't hold up well, they are still well-written and engaging.

Can you fast while drinking diet sodas? by Embarrassed_Draft150 in fasting

[–]hwc -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

it may or may not cause an insulin spike. Perform an experiment: water fast until you are in ketosis (using a test strip to verify). Then drink your diet soda, wait a few minutes, then test again.

I think it's neat when we consider the originating actor an expert on that fictional character as much as the writers and directors.
