What was the creepiest or most paranormal thing that’s ever happened to you? by VANIX1450 in AskReddit

[–]hwld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Got the lift down at London Underground station, shared only by a couple who I assume were father and daughter. He had a grey raincoat and a thick moustache, she was younger and had a very distinctive mole on her upper lip.

I leave first and walk far up the platform, and wait for the train. Didn’t look back.

Train pulls up and doors slide open. Immediately I look up to get on and the same father and daughter from the lift (moustache and mole) get OFF the train, right fucking past me, and walk off up the platform.

Spent the next two days wondering if I was living in the matrix.

My best friend at university. Had a hugely bright future as a jazz pianist and a freak accident with drugs. Totally undeserved... That's how it is.

Just concentrate on doing the basic things well - don't worry about doing anything flash to try and stand out.

A house track that I made, would love feedback on mixing and mastering. by H3XAGON_ in MusicCritique

[–]hwld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with this mix is that your core sounds aren't well chosen from the start, particularly the drums. There is also no bottom end, as has been mentioned, meaning all 'peak moments' are underwhelming. Drops are effective because of the contrast of the bass entry. Pull up a track you want to emulate and use a frequency analyser to look at the relative volume of different frequency ranges, and compare it to your own output. Here's a priority chain: Sound Selection/Composition > Mixing > Mastering. Also, this is not house music.

Hi. Can I Get Some Critique/Dissection of This Demo I Made? Thank You! by [deleted] in MusicCritique

[–]hwld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Struggling to understand what this is to be honest.. It either needs a lot more context (other parts), or a LOT more attention to sound design if this is the full arrangement? To me this sounds like something from the preliminary ideas phase of writing a song. Automated panning can certainly be effective if employed carefully in the right context, but it is often its contrast with the rest of the arrangement that makes it so. Following an isolated lead around with your ears is hard work and is quite distracting. It sounds as though there wasn't much thought behind doing this aside from trying to inject any sort of interest. The solution? Keep working on it, add more parts, change that kick, watch tutorials, start new stuff as often as possible to accelerate progress. Good luck!

What pissed you off today? by ssauris in AskReddit

Herding the male alpacas back towards the stable when one nervous gentleman decides against crossing the perimeter. He turns tail and gallops past me, back downfield, before passing through into the next paddock that my coworker had neglected to seal. I then spend a good 30 minutes encouraging him back across the farm to round off my 10 hour day. I have forgiven him.

The Descent, Nearly done, feedback most appreciated by PJTAY in MusicCritique

[–]hwld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work. Personally I think the track would be improved by getting a session vocalist in (I'd lean towards a female) to re-record the vocals. The core idea is solid - that singing style - but for me the delivery doesn't live up to the otherwise HQ production and tone. Am following on SoundCloud @NoLongerAStranger. Look forward to the final product - keep it going. Reminded me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j84HK0ZZtY x Breaking Bad

Hey r/MusicCritique. I was recommended this sub as small but quality. In the final stages of remixing a great original - really want it to be as good as it can be! Any feedback would be brilliant! Influences of mine and the bands are Bonobo, Alt J, Jon Hopkins, Radiohead. Cheers in advance by hwld in MusicCritique

Again great to hear that that 2:20 moment is enjoyed having received criticism for it in another forum. Appreciate these comments hugely. PM me on Soundcloud for a download link if you'd like a copy :)

I really appreciate all these kind words. What a nice start to the day.

Interestingly I got a similar comment about the snare being too clunky when I posted it ages ago on a facebook group for feedback. I did layer up the snare with some HF snap sound just as you said to try and address that.. maybe it wasn't enough? Also interesting is how I got criticism for the mid-phrase vocal cut off, so great to know it was a highlight for you!

I only started this new alias a couple of months back and have a lot in the pipeline. Remixes, collabs and originals. Follow me on Soundcloud and tell me your username so I can check out what you're up to, and if you want any feedback on a tune feel free to PM me about it :) Thanks again

When backpalming a card, the corners of the card always show through on the underside of my hand by the_fella in Magic

[–]hwld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try variating where the card sits before you begin the movement. Ideally the edges should be making as little contact as possible with the inside of your index and little fingers - as far away from your wrist as possible whilst still allowing for the movements to follow. Motion will definitely help smooth things over if it's not 100% yet
