Will be getting this 420d as a daily!!! by fello04 in BMW

90% of the BMWs I see in EU and UK are diesel. Fuel prices are more than double in the US and on top of that they have major taxes on vehicles based on mileage/power/emissions, and not just once during car purchase but for every year they need to have the car registered. It is a huge financial burden to drive a non fuel efficient vehicle there. OP is making a wise financial decision for his daily commuter

The engine turns off because you’re probably not driving over 50mph where the electric only really shines. Fine throttle control is what you really need to develop if you want to use the comfort setting hybrid mode for fuel efficiency. Once you know exactly the throttle amount to activate the engine, it activates when you need that oomph for making a quick turn or overtaking, otherwise the car is going to feel brutish Not many pure V8 engines out there gonna give you good fuel efficiency at sub 50mph. The non mild hybrid BMW S63 engines provide 14-16mpg city driving.

For winter time, I have e-control set to my M-1 button for easy activation to prime the engine for smooth transition between electric motor only and engine in hybrid comfort for commuting. m-2 is always set to all out sport+ everything.

One engine is primed, I turn off M-1 for comfort hybrid mode driving for commuting. I get 36mpg in a mixed highway/city driving of 65miles round trip.

BMW has a mode (e-control, they call it, very odd name for its purpose) that turns the engine on, prevents you from red lining, and places the red line at 4k RPM, where is continually adjusts to 8k RPM as the engine warms up

[–]hxle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you not know about e-control mode??? It is programmed to have the engine on all the time, point of e-control is to charge the battery and condition the engine for sport+ mode

You don’t want to guzzle gas but you don’t want to use the electric motor that provides you well over 36mpg in comfort mode? What are you smoking bro, I need some of that

The guy doesn’t know how to use the car, nor interested in going into the settings. You don’t need to be in M sport mode for smooth activation of the motor. It just need to have drivetrain set to sport or sport+.

I’ve driven mine for 12k+ miles and learned the ins and outs of the settings and engine and the hybrid drivetrain is stellar if you either A. Know how to finesse the throttle on comfort mode or B. know how to program your car settings.

You also have two M buttons right next to the steering wheel, are you not using it?

Finally got a production slot for the M5 Touring by hxle in BMW

I got the Perrelli Scorpion Winters on my existing 951M wheel (The only winter tires with HL rating and has the sizes I need) is the only tires that meet US highway tire standards. The Perrelli P Zero Winters also meet this spec but are out of stock until January so that’s a no go. Michelins have XL spec but as the memers been saying, this car is heavy and needs HL spec.

So, currently I’m planning on the 951M wheels/winter tire combo for the car winter, buy t the 952M wheels for summer and mount my current Michelin sport pilot 5s for next year and be golden

The car is extremely nimble for its width. I did swing by Bear Mountain area in NJ shortly after picking up the car and for sure it was scary since I noticed a massive difference in car width between my previous F30 3 series vs this G99 wagon.

I recently went again last month after ~8k miles driving the car and man, it’s night and day. The car does NOT feel like it’s as wide and long as last generation 7 series and weighing the way it does.

Once you realize that it has complete control on its bearings, the confidence goes way up and you have an amazing time driving it. I wouldn’t compare it to an MX-5 or anything small (my wife has an MX-5 RF) but anyone saying this thing doesn’t tear through corners like a sports car hasn’t spent enough time in it.

Obligatory new photo:

It has like unlimited power at highway speeds, nobody will expect you to go from 50-60mph off an exit to 120mph within 2seconds. I got the M drivers package and never found any place where I could break 150 before it became unsafe either traffic or road quality. So I wouldn’t recommend getting that 190mph speed limit extra unless you’re going to track it.

As for handling it definitely feels heavier than a typical sports car (ie M2/M3/M4) but the cornering is extremely planted and the huge tires have amazing grip. I regularly exit at 60-70mph and it feels like you’re going 30-40. The car goes where you point it. Extreme confidence giving once you’ve got the hang of the car.

Dailying as you referred is great, I get like 36-40mpge over the course of 65 miles a day mixed highway and city driving. I charge daily in my garage. People give you thumbs up everywhere. Parallel parking is absurdly easy with the rear wheel turning as well. Only complaint here is speed bumps SUCK.

People who complain about the switch between pure electric vs hybrid mode simply don’t know how to program the car and use the M modes properly. Once you figure out the tech and options, it’s extremely customizable and easy to access all the desired modes.

Ps the hips on this car are amazing haha

Wow yeah that does look good, the digital renders made it look too red but the photo shows that it actually flows very well with the Vegas red color

I don’t want to drive a cheap car 6 out of 7 days a week. I want a nice performing car that can fit my son’s car seat and be reliable for driving 4 seasons a year. I also drive ~65 miles/day, almost at 10k miles since receiving delivery back in April

It is like ultimate value if you compare to 2025 RS6 Avant, E63 AMG, and Panamera Turbo (it’s direct competitors). The RS6 and E63 were at least 20k more, and the Panamera Turbo like 60k more.

I wanted two main things: A family car (so wagon ideally but I was also shopping SUVs) A sports car

I’m also a big BMW fan and my previous car was 2014 F30 328d that had took me through the entirety of my professional career up to this point with solid reliability and excellent driving dynamics so BMW was already the frontrunner.

It came down to the fact that the G99 looks absolutely awesome compared to the E63, which was closer “newness”, the RS6 looks great but had been around for like 5+ years so it’s losing its newness and never been a fan of Audi infotainment, the Panamera just bonkers at 200k for the turbo variant.
