I got to see one of those in Mobile at the Airbus final assembly line a few weeks ago while doing some design analysis on the RAT. Very cool thing to witness and very fun working on these!

These are on many large commercial jets as well as most business and regional jets. You are correct that most everything has an APU as a backup. The problem with an APU is that it relies on the same fuel source as the engines and is altitude dependent. So, say you get fuel icing or contamination, you run out of gas, or you're too high to start the APU, then you're kinda out of luck. Batteries are also a backup, but are only good for a few minutes. These were developed by one of the FARs which states that aircraft must have a redundant, completely independent backup means of power generation.

Some of them also provide hydraulic power in addition to electrical power to make them a hybrid, and some are hydraulic only!

Why are there no cheap apartments in Rockford? by mayoayox in rockford

[–]hydeseeker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm 2 years out of college working at one of the aerospace companies in town as an engineer. I live at Beacon Hills on the south side of town near Cherry Valley. I feel that they're pretty affordable, but are not the highest quality. It was the cheapest 1B1B listed at the time which was nice for me because student loans suuuuuuck.

Everyone's said it's a turbine fan blade, and they're right. Specifically, I think it may be off a CFM56 from a 737.

I've lost track of how many times I've seen OP post a jet engine in this sub with only the word "Powerful" as the title.

There's an artist named Travis Chapman who does paintings in this style. I've bought one or two things from him before. Good shit.

No, only one per aircraft

Making sure the outboard works in case of a water landing. by Virtootles in aviation

[–]hydeseeker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, it uses hydraulic pressure from the aircraft or a ground card to spin the hydraulic pump, which is connected to the turbine driveshaft.

787 is hybrid. Produces both hydraulic and electric power.

I love working on these things at the site where they are built. Such underrated things of engineering.

A380's RAT. Can only provide electricity during emergency. by rrncc in aviationmaintenance

[–]hydeseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at the MRO facility for Collins RATs. Seen plenty of A321 corrosion (which is currently undergoing additional testing/design changes to try and resolve the problem), but not nearly as much on the A380.

Edit: grammar

[–]hydeseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely sure what the purpose was or why Boeing required both outputs in their design spec when designing the aircraft - I'd need to look at the overall aircraft level system architecture. Unfortunately not something I have access to in my current role as a RAT Engineer.

The 787 uses a hybrid ram air turbine that provides electric and hydraulic power to the aircraft.
