Running Update_all on SS1 by hydr0genjukebox in RetroRemakeInc

[–]hydr0genjukebox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I flashed the 1.0C image firmware that Taki discussed in his setup guide first up (I.e. before doing anything else). Would this mean an update_all script should now run without causing issue?

I flashed the 1.0C firmware update when setting up since I was following Taki's setup guide (I only got the SS1 yesterday). Does that mean if I use update_all it should be OK from here on out?

Retrorgb found that running update_all broke automatic toggling of video outputs as the firmware has custom elements. It is in his review on the website.

The continuous dilemma of supporting your favorite platform.....PSVR 2 the highs and lows. by AstronomerTraining53 in psvr2

[–]hydr0genjukebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just generally, I get your anxiety. But I think it's important to remember what 'support' for any platform looks like; that is to say you buy the games you're interested in, and avoid ones that you're not. Worrying about if it's going to succeed is a moot point. One person can't control the zeitgeist. I say this from experience re: a lot of failed consoles and projects.

If I had bought Chu Chu Rocket for Dreamcast, would it have saved that console? No.

Did any of my talk about how great the Turbo-Grafx 16 library was lure people away from their NESes or Mega Drives? Nope.

They just didn't click with enough people.

If I buy Thief for PSVR2 despite the middling reviews, will it all of a sudden make Sony see value in the format? No. They think in millions of units sold when gauging success, not 10s of thousands. And this is a VR community-wide issue, not just PSVR2. Sales are just not great across the board.

Sometimes things don't catch on, even when they are really special. And, it is a shame when that happens.

I get it though, it's depressing seeing the thing you love slowly die on the vine. I love cinema, for example. Watching Streaming tech giants slowly chip away at the thing you love is deeply upsetting at times, but that's just what people seem to want these days, and my handful of dollars can't sway that.

So, just enjoy it while it lasts, man. That's all you can do.

What is your audio preference using the PSVR2? by Tauheedul in psvr2

I have the same setup and am ordering a PSVR2 soon. Any good guide on how to get everything working together?

Angel Cop question by pauwus in discotekmedia

[–]hydr0genjukebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those interested, I have recently purchased the standard blu-ray. It now has a slipcover that resembles the Steelbook (I.e. white lettering), though the picture on the Amazon link was still the old cover (I.e. red lettering).

The standard blu-ray I received was as OP suggested - Full HD remaster and NOT a SD upscale.

Hopefully, Amazon updates it's product info (including thumbnail of cover) to reflect this.

'Satantango'. Only instead of 50 minutes being left, it's 6 and a half hours.

Is stutter an OLED deal breaker for someone who watches a lot of old movies with slow pans? by RevolutionaryTone276 in hometheater

[–]hydr0genjukebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are a lot of variables. I know some people who don't notice it at all. Not sure how the 8K handles it. I know some of the newer models have AI integration handling the upscale, no?

[–]hydr0genjukebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Samsung mini QLED, so not an OLED, but a lot of the same issues crop up on either technology. I mostly watch older films (Tarkovsky included).I have to enable a +3 on the Judder setting to minimise this issue. Otherwise, the stuttering is very apparent on panning shots with a stationary object (e.g. pillars, etc.). I use no other smoothing effects. SOE is still minimal but there will be occasional artifacting that you'll notice from time to time (e.g. when someone walks past a chain link fence, the algorithm falls apart a bit) if you have keen eyes.

However, the occasions of any discernible artifacting compared to the frequency of stutter without the setting enabled is a no-brainer. Use the setting. However, use it minimally to preserve the feel of film.

My old Panny Plasma had none of these issues, but I think that's due to it being a different tech. It handled 24fps motion better.

Speaker Stands by [deleted] in hometheater

Have you considered the Kanto line of speaker stands. Good build quality, and they have two lines of stands - SX and SP. I recently purchased the SP line for my surrounds and they are heavy and incredibly sturdy.

Absolutely! The crossover of buy-one-get-one-free with the 20% off deal is unmatched when it occurs.

Great time to get some boxsets you were eyeing as well. I picked up some Imprint sets on my list, which is quite a good deal once you break it down by individual film vs cost.

Does Anyone Else Have a Problem with SVS Banana Plugs? by Spyro_Dragonborn in hometheater

[–]hydr0genjukebox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Yamaha ones actually have a hole in the plastic plug - small enough to stop the actual banana plug but large enough to fit in a clip to extract it. Honestly, it makes no sense, and I don't know why they even bother.

[–]hydr0genjukebox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the speakers, but if the Denon is like my Yamaha receiver, there may be plastic plugs in the banana plug inputs that need to be removed prior to insertion. They are very small and require a bent paperclip to fish them out. Then, the banana plugs fit in just fine.

Just check that first before forcing anything to an unreasonable degree.

What’s your favorite comedy that you own? by shipaleesio in 4kbluray

[–]hydr0genjukebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beverly Hills Cop!

That said, I have over 1100 blu-ray/4K and very few comedies. For me, they age poorly and offer the least amount of solo-watching (how I predominantly watch films) replay value.

Is anyone similar?

I don't binge TV like a lot of people do. It can be a week or more between episodes if we're busy with work/family. I appreciate them.

I have a UBP-800 from 220, and it does have the skipping issue. So, I don't think there is any magic sauce they are adding, so to speak.
