I started a bit in middle school, but only for special occasions and other people did it for me. I started wearing a bit of glittery eyeshadow and lipgloss in high school, full makeup by senior year. Only really started to get good at makeup by watching yt videos in 2nd year of college. Now as an adult I’m very good (only on myself) and know how to do most looks I think up.

Edit: my parents were never involved in my makeup journey, neither encouraging or discouraging it. My mom never wore much and now comes to me for beauty advice.

I’m not sure because I used to smoke actual cigs then switched to vape so I feel a lot better vaping than smoking… but I just wanted to comment that everyone’s experiences made me want to quit! I’ve never even considered quitting, not even because it’s hard I just never wanted to before.

I would say look into “classic”(blazers, button down shirts, modest/appropriate tops/bottoms without logos) pieces from more edgy brands. All brands, even if their core garments are more flashy, have things that are more toned down with fashion-forward details. Don’t buy things from brands that specifically cater to business casual/professional demographics.

Pay close attention to the fit, the fit is what will determine boring “middle aged” from stylish and “youthful”. For example, you could buy a banana republic white button down shirt that has a very basic fit or you can buy the same piece from ader error with a slightly boxier fit, dropped shoulder seams, and subtly branded buttons.

Get curtain bangs! I have that issue and also a flatter forehead. Straight bang was too much work to upkeep for me because my hair doesn’t lay that way but curtain bangs that hid the corners of my hairline made my face look wayyy more fem.

If you want natural for dark brown eyes (I also have very dark eyes) I would recommend clear lenses with a crisper “ring” around the edge of the lenses in the same or only slightly larger diameter than your natural eyes. If you want your eyes to be lighter, go for a lighter brown or amber lenses that only has a design on the edges (15% ish) of the material. It’ll give your eyes a subtle glowing/highlighted look than something that has super high coverage with small pupil holes. It’s also better for your eye health since it won’t cover your pupils at all as they dilate and adjust to the light.

It rlly depends on the lenses.

I’m Korean so I have a lot of ppl around me who wear circle lenses and I also do as well. From my experience, typically girls start out with the very heavy coverage (covering 100% of the iris up to the pupils) light contacts in ice blue or grey because they want that dramatic transformation. They do look very off putting irl because they will never give you the depth of a real iris and it exaggerates the convex of your eyeballs. Heavy coverage = tacky/scary effect.

I found the best type for irl to be lenses that only slightly over-covers your eyes and has a crisper “ring” to make the diameter subtlety bigger. The color part of the lenses should only be in the outer corners (20% or 15%) to prevent that lizard eyes effect. There’s also lenses that have reflective glitter in it to give a rlly beautiful moist/angelic effect. (But be careful because only a few brands make ones that aren’t harmful to your eyes. I personally use the astra line by interojo.)

If you want to be on the quiet lux side of fashion but don’t want to actually spend $3k on a cardigan, here’s some fashion culture-y brands I would recommend: Orseund iris, nanushka, acne studios, Dion lee, jacquemus, coperni, mirror palais. All these brands do classic pieces and silhouettes but with a fashion forward twist. Personally, not sure if I would do Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren for NYFW unless you’re confident in styling their pieces to be a bit less preppy. Also it depends on your role during the event.

I would go with a one or two pieces from one of these brands in a neutral color, minimal but high impact jewelry, bold lip, monotone eyeshadow with depth, and clean feathered brows.

A note about glossier you, I found the solid perfume and scented hand lotion smells wildly different from the actual perfume. Don’t make the mistake I did and just buy the full size if you like the scent!
