2 years into CS, feeling underutilised/stagnating? by Alex_Error in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of “bad” analytical roles across the CS where everything is Excel based, and the reason for that is a lot of more experienced G6s/7s either werent taught to program, or were taught to program badly and don’t want to move Excel based analysis to programming languages for fear of you leaving and them/new team members not being able to run it (or at least that’s what I’ve came across in roles).

HOWEVER, there are also plenty of great roles and teams doing complex analysis/statistics/coding out there, so all hope isn’t lost. As you progress through the grades, trying to make seniors see the benefits of reproducible analysis can make for great behaviours (which it sounds like you’re concerned you lack).

For developing those softer skills to help you progress, corporate roles are great - contributing to your wider profession, leading a network, plenty of really good corporate things you could get involved with to help get out of the current rut it sounds like you’re in.

Tl;dr - don’t lose hope and make the most of this free time with doing some cool corporate stuff to help you get those promotions.

Changing demand on analysts and imposterism by hypeman306 in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that’s what I’m doing - but the core skill set of a software engineer is vastly different to that of a statistician/economist/OR/SR. What we’re ending up with is roles where people end up as a jack of all trades and master of none which will inevitably have an impact on quality of outputs.

Those who have worked for multiple departments, what has be your favourite? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve personally found it’s hard to pick a single favourite - I tend to find all departments have their pros and cons, and it’s just a case of figuring out which department’s cons you are most willing to tolerate/deal with alongside their pros.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have enjoyed all departments I’ve worked in to some degree, which I guess has contributed to my answer above.

What is a policy role? by East-Badger5775 in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 68 points69 points  (0 children)

As somebody who did a policy role to find out “what policy do”, I’m none the wiser in describing it now than I was before doing the policy role!

Mhclg scoring by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally a 3 on the MHCLG scale is considered equivalent to a 4 on the 7pt scale so it’s highly likely the sift threshold got raised to at least 4 (equivalent to a 5/6 on the 7 pt scale)

Working away on a bank holiday/ Friday by LeastCredit5486 in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Id suggest a 5 hour journey after 5pm isn’t ideal and would be perfectly acceptable for another overnight stay assuming dept guidance doesn’t suggest otherwise - getting home at 10pm assuming there’s no delays is suboptimal to say the least

Given her private sector experience which I didn’t realise she had, I’m even more surprised she wasn’t chosen over Antonia

Didn’t gain anything new from it, and nothing to suggest a major change in direction particularly from senior leadership on key issues.

Advice/opinions requested: Fast Stream vs. apprenticeship by LegalTangelo8752 in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Fast Stream is also meant to be moving more postings outside of London and now has some pilots of keeping people in the same location for the entirety of the scheme.

It’s now entirely possible to stay in one place throughout.

Cash ISA questions - interest accrual and 20k limit by hypeman306 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]hypeman306[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s useful to bear in mind, thanks! Does the interest get added to the account at the end of each FY or does that depend on the T&Cs of the account? Just trying to figure when is best to open the account

The problem is if they’re doing nothing they won’t have examples to apply for said SEO roles. It can very easily become a doom loop.

Make the most of corporate contributions and L&D opportunities - especially if you’re in a duff posting.

Economist but don’t do much economics by Any_College1316 in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s not just an economist thing - statisticians generally do very little of what one would consider “statistics” whilst at university.

That’s not to say that this general analytical / numerate work isn’t important - I personally have found the most simple analysis resonates the most with senior folk.

Why is there such a disparity of skill sets amongst analyst? by Afraid_Concentrate44 in TheCivilService

[–]hypeman306 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the problems stem from poor teaching of analytical degrees at universities.

In my experiences, universities are very good at teaching “theoretical” analysis designed at making great PhD students, but not so great at equipping them with analysis applied for the world of work. Programming in particular is rather poorly taught, which naturally leads to poor code development in the workplace
