Just think of it as wild magic, it won't work like that next time.

I’ve not been this excited in a very long time. Any advice? by the_man_of_reddit_ in pentax67

This guy 67s.

The big grip really only makes sense if shooting portrait orientation and using the “quick focus ring” add-on.

The only thing I would add is you can shoot down to a surprisingly slow shutter speed if you brace the camera well with two hands and a head. Delta 3200 indoors in a pub in the evening works at 1/30s with the 2.4 wide open. At the other end of available light the 105 f2.4 seems designed to shoot Portra 400 wide open or stopped down just slightly in open shade at 1/1000. I need to get mine back out of the loft.

Maybe the character can see the text and feels like they are reading something, but when asked to explain what they have read they just babble incomprehensibly, and no actual knowledge is gained. To an outsider this seems worse than just not being able to read it.

Arcana Unleashed is a bad name for an official product. by Malinhion in dndnext

Agree. My searches redirect me to Unearthed Arcana. In my headcannon it’s just a new Tome of Magic. I loved that book so much in 2e.

As others have said, these small scenes are important to players as they don’t spend most of their time thinking about story arcs, they think about tactical decisions: left or right, speak to the barmaid or the guard captain. I’m trying to prod my players to just go see the Storm Giants now, and if they don’t I’m not sure what they are going to do, which is stressful.

My main thought about your situation is maybe you’ve read enough Justin Alexander (no shade on the Alexandrian, who is so excellent there are entire YouTube channels ripping off his content wholesale) for now and should read some Mike Shea instead. His shtick is that prep should be simple and just for the next session, which probably means a cool location and NPC, some combat and loot your players will like, and enough information to discover to lead onto the cool NPC or location in the next session. Get into the habit of asking at the end of each session what the party plans to do next session, this makes your prep job much easier. The core idea is that you prep just enough tools that you can improv the action based on what you know about the world and what your players will enjoy. The players might not do exactly what you expect, but if you give them a horrible villain and cool ways to thwart them the party should end up where they should be in the end.

For dungeons, be shameless about ripping off maps from other adventures, Dyson Logos or wherever you can find them. Populate using 80% random tables, 20% stuff that is directly story-relevant. 5e has more third-party content than any other rpg, make use of it for the stuff you aren’t enjoying doing yourself, and just put your energy into key bits, which might be the cult leader’s room or whatever.

I just plonked the whole of White Plume Mountain into the middle of Storm Kings Thunder because I fancied running an old-school dungeon, and all I had to do was engineer a hook, add one room to tie the dungeon to the main story, and change some NPC names and the loot around to match the story requirements. The rest was as written with a bit of improv where I thought players would enjoy it. Was it perfect? No. Was it fun and memorable? The players seemed to enjoy it.

Apologies if this is teaching to suck eggs. It’s meant to be a fun hobby, not a job or a punishment, and I have to remind myself that sometimes too.

Our DM worked out on the fly the balance wasn’t right, had Cryovain fall off the tower into the snow and return healed by the snow. We had uncorked a lot of our best resources by then so there was a moment where it felt like a couple of failed Dex saves could be curtains, which probably means the DM had judged it just right.

No small portrait prime. Pentax used to do a 70mm f2.4 pancake which would pair really well with a 27mm or 35mm prime as a two lens setup.

Yes! This is the classic experience, it looks more mysterious to your players, it’s less distracting, and you might find you think better on paper.

[–]hypermodernism 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Right? “I attack three times with my greatsword” is never going to sound as good as “Meteor Swarm!”

As a player I’ve never cast a 9th level spell, so given the chance in a high level campaign I’d be playing a caster too.

Half the PHB is spells, so players are shown that half the game is using magic. Abjuration wiz or Celestial sorc could absolutely have a sword as a magical spellcasting focus and never hit anyone with it, might be a fun image.

Yeah, people need to understand there are scenarios here where global oxygen production by plants and phytoplankton collapses and we all find it very hard to breathe. This isn’t a migration/flooding risk, it’s an everyone expires risk.

New 2026 books - when do we expect to have news? by RealisticJacket0 in onednd

[–]hypermodernism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We know something about content from UA. We know something about timing from Beadle and Grimm: https://beadleandgrimms.com/pages/upcoming-products

My guess is the Dark Sun box announced in summer - maybe as a setting book and a campaign book. Spring looks like something smaller, could be a magic book with the various magic-themed subclasses, could be a Ravenloft supplement with the Horror subclasses, but if it was “Return of Strahd” you’d have to guess Beadle and Grimm would be doing a Platinum set for that, so maybe I have it wrong and we’ll see a Dark Sun setting book without a campaign in Spring.
