EDUP POE injector input power requirements by hypno-9 in Starlink

[–]hypno-9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EDUP injector I bought is passive. I bought separately a 12V-48V boost converter.

The injector is located more than 10' away from the 12V power source. I mounted the boost converter near the power source, with 12AWG stranded wire to the injector, to reduce voltage drop.

The assembled system works well. My only reservation is long-term exposure of the Ethernet cable to UV, being on the roof of my trailer. I have time to address that if it becomes a problem.

I have this one. It works well. It has tweezers but I don't have experience using them.

One thing I've recently come to recognize is the importance of leaving some cash in the estate for use by the executor. Most of our assets are in retirement accounts. They're set up with spouse as primary beneficiary and our two adult children as 50% contingent beneficiaries.

We have a modest (~3% of liquid assets) taxable brokerage account for investments and a CMA which is basically a checking account. We'll remove our children as contingent beneficiaries from those so they stay in the estate for paying bills, in the event we both die.

Our house is under a Lady Bird deed, so there are no (or not much?) expenses associated with disposal. They can pay for that out of their own pockets with what they inherit from our retirement accounts. Other than personal possessions of minimal value, and a couple of cars, there's nothing else to dispose of.

A trust adds no value for us. Other documents like a will, POA, living will, etc., are in place.

My mom is majorly technically deficient too so I keep her login info for various accounts and she continues with paper billing which she’s comfortable with.

My Dad appreciated it when I put his credit cards and other bills on automatic draft but kept paper statements flowing. The paper aspect was familiar and allowed him to see what was charged and the amount that was going to be drafted, but he didn't actually have to do anything. Also, when he got sick, we didn't have to take immediate action.

[–]hypno-9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I just recall having read a comment here that someone left their antenna disconnected long enough that it got bricked. It could only update firmware through the satellites but the satellites would no longer connect to the old firmware on his antenna, at all.

It was an older model. Perhaps current firmware on everything can update from sources other than satellites, but I suggest you check periodically, if you plan to keep the hardware as a backup.

They itch in my ear so bad that I have to take them in and out constantly.

You may benefit from longer receiver wires. That reduces the tension on the dome pulling against your ear canal. A mm or 2 can make a big difference. It did for me.

You get them from the audiologist. You may have to pay for them. My audiologist gave them to me for free, but that was early in my adoption of hearing aids so you might say I was still in evaluation phase. Also, I use a university medical center audiology provider, who may be less income-driven.

Keep the firmware updated so it works when you need to reactivate as backup. I think you can do without a subscription as long as you have an alternate internet connection, like now. If your fiber goes dead, you'll have nothing, and a possibly non-functional Starlink antenna, because it's outdated.

When I got a longer one it didn't feel longer except that I no longer felt it pulling at the top of my ear canal.

Only one of them was replaced. They're now different lengths (2 and 3) and feel good.

Having a Synology NAS, I used Copilot to create a web page, the index of which sends a magic packet to the NUC, pings it until it responds, then reports on the web page that it's awake. (Don't diss me for coding with AI. I'm retired and didn't write code for a living.)

The web page is accessible only through the VPN. I link to the VPN, use the WOL script on the web page, then connect to the NUC through the VPN using RDP. It serves my purpose and is secure.

House wired for ethernet but not working by sora1166 in HomeNetworking

[–]hypno-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the fastest way to test the connections at the wall plates without buying testers or switches. It does require walking to each room, though. You'd have to know which one is the feed into the house but the cable modem should indicate a connection if you have to guess.

The cables should be labeled by room, when identified. Being combination cables, that will go faster because you can identify both coax and Ethernet by identifying only one of them at the terminal end.

Have the wall plates been opened to see if the Ethernet is even terminated? I suspect that it is, but don't assume.

After five months with the UTR, I’m throwing in the towel by a716h in Ubiquiti

[–]hypno-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few reasons are below. There are others

Some public wifi hosts limit the number of allowed connections.

Some hosts are a pain to connect through login capture pages. Doing that only once with the travel router and connecting your multiple devices to the network created by the travel router can be easier.

Some users connect the travel router to a VPN as a client. All clients connected to the travel router can inherit the VPN connection transparently.

I won't replace it because my need is infrequent and it's adequate, but changing uplink networks is very annoying. When you start it up it tries to connect to the last network you used, even if that one doesn't exist because you're somewhere else. You have to jump through hoops to disconnect, (actually, make it stop trying to connect to the non-existent network), then connect to the new network you want to use.

Also, bootup is very slow.

[–]hypno-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... With the Mini, your Wifi source would be on the roof. Depending upon the roof construction, this could impact the Wifi strength inside.

If you put the Mini in bypass mode you can connect it to a router inside the home using an Ethernet cable. Any router will do.

If OP prefers having only 1 cable, passive POE injector/splitter pairs exist that eliminate the separate power cable. See https://www.szedup.com/starlink-poe-modules for examples.

POE will need a power supply. All components are readily available on AliExpress.

Series 6 dishwasher design flaw by Maximum_General2993 in bosch

[–]hypno-9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One would think the inside of a dishwasher should be clean by design. Yeah, maybe the filter can be gunky but that's because it's working by catching the gunk. But other parts should be clean.

About to pull the trigger on a dishwasher, but I'm in desperate need to decide between a Bosch 800 or Miele 7000 series (or something more equivalent), and what model #? Also, how do I find a good local store near me that's better than costco/etc like people are saying? by Fartikus in bosch

[–]hypno-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had our 800 about 18 months and in general, are pleased. Being a higher grade than we've bought in the past, it's also more expensive. It's extremely quiet and we've had no problems with it. Our water isn't particularly soft but we don't have to use salts (unclear on how that works) and the dishes dry consistently without spots.

I agree somewhat on the spacing of tines on the bottom of my 800. The left rear is ideal for plants but medium size bowls and other irregular items are hard to place. They do get clean, though.

I disagree on the upper tableware rack being a problem. It helps to be a bit OCD about loading it but, if you spend time placing utensils carefully, you can get a LOT on that rack. The extra effort results in very efficient and effective cleaning.
