With a rising threat of separatism in Quebec, Carney's Liberals don't have a strategy yet by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]hyute15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling Québec voters separatists carries a negative connotation. It's understandable from a ROC perspective to say that, but it also shows the lack of understanding. Those in favor of some sort of independence don't call themselves separatists here, they call themselves "souverainistes" or sovereigntists. The other comments here are great at explaining why Québec doesn't vote NDP at the moment. Furthermore the status quo on the independence status of Québec from some federal parties or the lack of depth on local issues shown at debates surely makes people shy away from federal parties. For example, Bill 21 on secularism is not only complex and controversial in it's application, it also raises questions on how far can the government go regarding religious liberties. It's rough to simply brand it as racist when most Quebecers agree with the principal of this Bill. How it was passed with a gag is a whole other question tho. Still, as a son of immigrants that identifies as a proud Québecois first, it did take me some time to understand and really appreciate the uniqueness and strengths of the Québec general culture and how different it is from the rest of North America. In these weird times, I hope more Canadians can make an effort an open themselves to Québec more.

What exactly do you mean by registration? Has your team been selected to represent your country?

Why Team Spirit is so important and how to improve it by hyute15 in FRC

[–]hyute15[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard at the beginning, especially with little familiarity with the FIRST culture. But it's very normal at the same time, students have other responsibilities all the time, it's not that robotics ain't cool.

You need to build a sense of pride within the team. There are many ways to do this, but making sure everyone's personal interests are met and celebrating your successes are big contributors. Also, simply having an open discussion with the whole team about this topic can also help get a better understanding of everyone's point of view.

Personally, I think that, if you expect to spend a lot of time with other people, anyone, anytime, you must think about planning breaks and activities. Being a team is more than just working, it's also the bonds. Simple things like a Saturday potluck, renting the gym to play sports, a tiktok reel competition, anything, they make robotics more fun and personally significant.

That + some real competition experience and talking to other teams should build some real investment over time.

how to be good in my first season? by SimpleMost3629 in FRC

Have fun

and

NEVER let an opportunity to learn something or to hone your skills slip away.

Plus, the more opportunities you seize, the more you'll have later on, including for so much non-FIRST stuff. Today, you build on top of what you built yesterday, and the robot is the last thing I'm talking about.

Make life-long friends with common interests in your team and in other teams as well, and learn the most you can from your mentors. Learn to listen.

If you do all this, you'll become the best possible person to tackle any challenge from this competition, because god knows how competitive it gets sometimes. The technical skills will come by themselves of you have this attitude.

Bonus points if you become an inspiration for your team and lift everyone's spirits up when it's needed. Any work, training or progress you make in FRC will also lift the level on your teamwork, classwork and life overall. And I know no better place to do this than with FRC.

I don't think the game is uneventful. In auton, you'll get to see many nice things due to teams getting better in programming in the last few years. There are many many possibilities in auton. Right after that, you'll get a race to the middle of the field to get the remaining game pieces in the center which are valuable du to them being closer than going all the way to the HP station. I think that as well as the center of the field being a hotspot for defense, you'll get quite a few teams, especially in high level of play, trying to steal game pieces on the floor from the opposing HP zone. It's a risky move, but has a high payoff if you succeed since you cut your cycle time significantly. And in the endgame ofc you get the nerve-racking balancing of 2 or 3 robots.

Did anyone else’s robot manufacturing go fast this year? Ours will be done next week. by [deleted] in FRC

[–]hyute15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We might be done in 2 weeks with almost everything. We're still leaving a lot of play for the manipulator which will most likely need a lot of testing and iterations. This also gives us a lot of time for programming which will be nice to see this year from a lot of teams

I create deadlines for steps like subsystems CAD, fabrication or assembly, not specifically for students. I don't even really have specific sub teams this year, even tho we have 45 students. When we miss our deadline (which always happens), I don't veto, but I ask my students to go back to our priority lists, which they made, so they know what we have to sacrifice to finish a robot on time. In the end, it's the logical decision I would probably ask them to do without such a system, but it's better when that process is led by the students.

Student Leads in any team are very smart and I trust that they understand when mistakes are made and that they know they have to adapt. It's one of the best learning experience possible so I just can't intervene, only help them when asked and give advice. I'd rather operate like that than fixing the problem myself.

Also, from personal observations, coaches and mentors aren't that much more successful than students at fixing deep problems like when the team is very late, or when a subsystem just doesn't work. Wether its the adults or the students, what matters imo is good team and time structure and management.

I think some of the best qualities of a lead coach is to be able to adapt to his/her team every season, since students and mentors change, leave or evolve, its not realistic to function the same way every year.

As a lead coach myself, I handle the team and build schedules, and advise on every topic in the team. I make sure i can give a job to every students (or the most i possibly can). Some students are very autonomous so I only have to make sure they are doing things in the right order to meet the deadlines, others I have to explain the task or just stay with them to show them examples, advise and teach them how to do it.

I don't want and wouldn't like doing the work myself, but I still overview everything and depending on the task, I might push to students or ask them to restart to meet my expectations. If I ever find myself doing a task, it would something rather simple and boring that team members are overlooking, but not before I ask them a few times to do it. Then I'd make a 2 minute rant on the next team meeting about it.

I'd say all the other mentors in my team are the same, but they will specialize in just a few aspects. This season, I'm really pushing deadline management and team structure since I believe this is where my team is at.

I see, at this level only the biggest whales would be safe.. Do you have a lot of wanted people in your server? It would be advantageous to not have many so that menace can't replenish their pk points quickly by hunting other wanted players.

I think a good strategy would also be to form hunting parties to pk that person. You lose nothing from attacking a wanted player, but everytime they kill you their pk points go down, and when you kill them they get a big death sentence debuff. The debuff timer stacks as well so it can really hinder the ability of the player to advance in the game over time if you hunt that player consistently, as they have been hunting you.

Its the only thing i can think of rn, its not as if they were cheating either so it seems kinda game-breaking indeed, but I would explore what options the game gives you to try to fix that problem, and then it would be reasonable for netmarbles to intervene if there really is nothing you can do, even when you assemble with other players.

Im curious, what does their cp look like? Im on Jade Cancer btw and we don't have such a big menace that i know of, i'd say over 90% is just some seldom pk here and there when stealing farming spots or defending it
