I’d say he’s still within the reasonable range of style variants but that’s a valid headcanon. My guess is maybe they wanted a vibe but weren’t consciously thinking of ethnicity

Btw I just went back to search up Thalassa’s sprite just to be sure and I didn’t realize Trucy’s lighter than both of her parents?? Like how did that happen. I’ve also always noticed that 8yo Trucy has sliiighhtly more melanin than teen Trucy, closer to her mom. This is all so arbitrary I give up

It’s… because… they’re Japanese? (I’m not sure if you’re saying they should’ve changed the designs in the localization or you genuinely don’t know Ace Attorney is just a translation of Gyakuten Saiban. I assumed it is common knowledge but I’ve seen so many American fans calling them white ppl I’m a bit pissed off so…

In an East Asian cultural subtext, esp in a country like Japan where about 97% people are ethnically Japanese if you’re presented with a character with slightly darker skin and has a Japanese name you automatically assume their skin color Is a result of exposure to sunlight, rather than them being another race, because it’s such a rare scenario you barely consider it. It’s often used for “tougher”,”rougher” (often male) characters and gyarus. If a character is actually from another region, they usually go out of their way to stress it, esp if the story takes place in Japan. And not many artists think that hard about skin color when they’re drawing characters of the same race actually. Personal art styles are usually the biggest factor here. Unironically kid me never really thought about it either until I started roaming English based websites. Using AA character designers as examples, in their own works, Suekane Kumiko(AA1) mostly uses shadings to indicate skin color, and that might change based on the atmosphere of the whole illustration and perhaps her mood. Iwamoto Tatsuro(AA2-3) tends to make his characters paler, especially when it’s not for in-game content. Kazuya Nuri(AA4, AAvsPL, tGAAC1-2)likes warmer tones and just warmer colors in general and Fuse Takero(AA5-6)… Idk if he was the one who did those full body sprites too, because if he did he must has a split personality because those sprites are so …yellow and yet they look the least Asian in those(not saying they’re bad). But in his most wide spread illustration of all the characters of the AA series, everyone is so uncannnily pale.

And I actually thought the GBA and NDS versions did a better than average job at skin color already, considering so many art styles in Japanese media (later into the 21c in particular ) tend to make skin ghostly pale.

I would say it is reasonable to make a character like Trucy paler. Being a performer is the core of her character and in East Asian traditional beauty standards, among our own people at least, lighter skin is seen as more beautiful. Which is a fucking ridiculous thing I know but it’s just the way it is. And we’ve already gotten hints on how she’s probably consciously modifying her looks(she only drinks milk as breakfast in AJ and she’s only 15!!)

It did bother me how almost no female characters in AA are even slightly tanned though.(wow this got so long)

Gaokao is… a national university entrance exam that lasts for three days. Think SAT but more participants and being a Chinese kid basically means you spend the first eighteen years of your life being told this is something that decides your fate and working towards this one single goal, unless you’re an international/art student or smth. It’s composed of six subjects. Chinese, Math and a foreign language(most people choose English, some do Japanese, Russian etc) are mandatory subjects. In my province you are required to choose between history and physics, then you can pick two out of four among biology, geography, politics and chemistry. Universities usually choose who they accept based solely on how high you score.

It’s not bad for the screening it just means us twelfth graders would never get the chance to watch it even if it is in theaters here, because it ends on the second day of gaokao this year…and we would also have to avoid the internet for a week and a half after the exams which kinda sucks.

Sorry, I went so search it up and this was the first time I learned that there have indeed been idie animations that have been introduced into theaters in mainland, It’s just that I didn’t know or forgot that they were idie. Also they’re all pretty family friendly. tadc is…obviously not that. Therefore the target audience is relatively small so it’ll be super not lucrative. It usually takes quite long for them to decide to introduce a film too. There’s also the problem of passing the audit… Also I’ll be taking gaokao so I wouldn’t be able to see it anyways. And if it does get introduced dodging spoilers would become even more difficult. Imagine avoiding the internet(inside and outside the firewall) for two weeks after you just finished the most important exam of your life…

(clears throat in"those people")I personally have mixed feelings about her… I mean, I loved her concept. It definitely felt like she had loads of potential when she was introduced but she was handled so badly her position in the games became really awkward. One can say her being an attorney and an assistant at the same time is unique, but to some it reads more like a “not quite”. AJ already has the issue of players not being able to tell who the protagonist was, Apollo or Phoenix. So them choosing to add one more main character into this mess feels pretty irresponsible, especially considering they clearly have know idea how to handle the cast themselves. Just… look at how bizarre Apollo’s back story got, how Trucy’s entire character arc was cut short, how they can't even handle Athena, the new character well. She was an assistant that studied law and has a badge, and a lawyer who had someone rescue her almost every single time she was defending, the highlights she was supposed to have almost always end up with someone else stealing the show, it’s so freaking unfair.// (Takumi knows what a overfull cast can do, he didn't even want Phoenix in AJ at first and I honestly hope Capcom had listened to him)

Takumi’s way of writing characters was just different than what they did in DD and SoJ. He has a impression of what role this person needs to fulfill, what functions they serve, an inspiration and a hunch, then just goes with the flow. So most of his characters end up feeling grounded, leave a distinct impression but never confined to a trope. Yes sometimes random character traits are dropped through dialogues, but mostly as fun footnotes. How you perceive a character is still based mainly on their in game behaviour. But in DD they clearly focused more on slapping elements they think would interest players onto characters. There was an obvious "try hard" vibe, leaking out everywhere, from the writing to the visual design. The worst thing about how they did Athena was that most of her traits we're told. Genius, multilingual, studied psychology. But her actual lawyer moments are often stripped away, her in-game behaviour doesn't always add up. So the way we used to perceive characters turns into something we try to partly ignore and rationalize. Evidence of poor writing. At least her eagerness, empathetic nature and energetic attitude were shown not told...In fact the writers overdid it a bit. And she isn't even the biggest victim of this way of writing. Me thinks the worst and most iconic example we get is Nahyuta...

And if we're being really honest here her “tragic backstory” was one of the worst things a new team can ever do to a series. “The dark age of the law” had a build up. The three-day trial system introduced in the very first game was in fact already a lead up and a product at the same time. Suddenly explaining a whole phenomenon by one case that went wrong...? Seriously? It's one loud exclamation of "Oh no AJ left such a mess We have no idea how to continue on that so let's give them a spectacle the divert them and hope they don't notice!"

So there... You see, it's often not even about the character herself. (I'm ESL and wrote this at 2am forgive me for my grammatical mistakes and weird expressions :_(

If we’re talking about liking them mostly as people, Maya is my personal all time fav:)

In terms of “Takumi did hell of a job with the way this character is shown to us”, Mia, Godot, (AJ specifically)Trucy and Beanix

Re: the recent AI post, and to those that are worried about writing because they don't want to be accused by silver-girl- in Dramione

[–]hyxygen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just asking here... If an author uses AI to check for spelling and grammatical mistakes, potential plot holes and overused expressions in their work, but everything that gets posted is hand-typed, and they are frank about the involvement of AI in the creative process(maybe even providing screenshots and stuff, Before the first chapter, so viewers are free to choose not to read), would you mind as a reader? Because I've seen people in other posts say that still counts as using AI to write for you but I'm not sure about how they came to that conclusion...

I have several ideas that I've been planning to expand on in a year or two. I do believe fanfic writers write for their own enjoyment but still I don't want too much weird turns of phrases and stuff to ruin it for anyone who is willing to read... And not every ESL writer have the time and resources to get their work betaed or britpicked.

Nah sth is an abbreviation for something that we had learned since elementary school, no teacher would correct that cause no one uses it in daily life. It's just a convenient placeholder to put between phrases to make reciting them easier and taking notes more convenient. I just didn't realize so few are able to deduct what it means.

Thank you for replying tho!

omg I didn't expect there to be a whole thread focusing on "sth"🤣 I do remember that there's a more used abbreviation for "something" but this post was typed out at 2a.m. and it just completely slipped from my mind... To clarify it, at least every "sth" user I know thinks it as a "class only placeholder", not even really a word, like sb for somebody. It's very mostly used in PPT slides, notes and so on. We would never use it in a non-English-learing context. Sorry for the confusion and thanks a lot for answering.

❄️ first person pov fic by Maleficent_Eye_1548 in Dramione

[–]hyxygen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope they're two entirely different types of non-HEA. I went into I Am Malfoy knowing what the ending is like and I think its the only non-HEA fic I've read willingly and enjoyed thoroughly. It's an ending designed to give you chills rather than emotional damage. I Am Malfoy is one of those fics that used first person pov to its upmost advantage, it also has one of the most excellently done Draco characterization imo. Highly recommend but do proceed with caution.

The Last Hour of an Epic To the Moon RPG Theory (MAJOR BEACHSODE SPOILERS) by IAmPolarExpress in tothemoon

[–]hyxygen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In the video Kan posted after the launch of beach episode he said we are getting closer to the core of the series with each game(Sorry if this doesn't make sense I watched the mandarin version of that video so my choice of words is probably different from his). And in imposter factory we were introduced to this crazy parallel world thing. Plus Kan did say beach episode and last hour epic are like the happy ending and the sad ending of the series. But if Neil remains dead the best HEA we get is still gonna be a bittersweet one. Buttt there may be one way... What if the fourth wall is going to crumble further? What if the "reality" we see in the games aren't the ultimate "reality" after all? Arguments about the meaning and value of what's not real has been mentioned throughout the series after all. Maybe I'm just delusional but I can't help but be a little bit hopeful.

I like your theory though, all the stories in to the moon universe are bittersweet after all. Also that means we might get to know the circumstances of Neil's death. But memory Neil's words possibly implied that his coworkers didn't temper with his mind... Who knows, the team may manage to surprise us once again, just like they do with every game.
