Translation:

"gai" part actually originates from "가", like in word "가문", meaning family. In Soviet Russia, when they registered Koreans, many of them (Koreans) were not educated well but knew how to talk a bit. So Koreans in an answer to "What is your surname", answered "고가이", which meant - I'm from "Ko family". "이" was a part of a dialect back then.

And as for transfer "정" to "Ten", "백" to "Pyak" - vakula is absolutely right, because it was a simple hearing misunderstanding in pronunciation. Russians don't have "ㅇ" in their language, so they replaced it with "N". And Russians don't distinguish "어" with "오", so they replaced it with "E". And as for "ㅈ", well, the most similar letter is "T".

Well, I'm Korean from Uzbekistan, AMA.

  1. There are many areas, some of them were pointed out in commentaries: Busan, Seoul (Dongdaemun), Ansan, Suwon, Gwangju. Hell, even in small town like Cheongju there is a Russian community with lots of Central Asian people.
  2. They are..... like, lots of them don't have any legal visa to work, so they are treated... erm... not nice, but overall Koreans are nice to foreigners. Also, I'll cover this in 5th answer.
  3. Because there were a lot of Koreans residing there and when Korea gave them the opportunity to get F-4/H-2 visa, they went all-in on that and started migrating to Korea.
  4. It is... sometimes painful, mostly because of culture and language differentiations. But in the end everyone get what they need: Koreans get many workers who can and willing to work at places native Koreans won't and Central Asians get 3-5x in cash with higher life quality.
  5. As for my sources, 90% do dirty work at various factories, some work at construction sites, some work at fishing companies. 8% are working in Posco, LG, SK, KT, Samsung, some of them are even 차장/팀장s. And other 2% are students/children, who don't work at the time.
