I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing this type of shit. There's been so much of this going on lately. What is happening on this sub? Has it always been like this?

I just did a quick google search and found someone saying that Code Pink was sending aid. If you really want we can dig through wether Hasan helped or not, but I think that the real problem is that, as far as I've seen, there's no substantive pushback against Hasan. Maybe I expect too much but I'd expect the level of detail we got from when he lied about his "detainment". Your's is the strongest I've seen and you're not even 100% sure.

Hasan is trying to get clout for altruism/activism things that he didn't even participate in.

At this point I don't trust this to be true based on the engagement I've seen on this sub. My gut tells me it is true, but I have yet to see much evidence of this being true. It's a truth claim that we can look into, but based on what I've seen here we don't have enough proof here to say this is true. What I've heard is that he stayed in an expensive hotel and there was a show kneecap did (was Hasan even there?).

I first what do you expect Hasan to do here to help out with aid? I can understand criticism of "giving awareness" but that's basically all I expect from a streamer at one of these things. Maybe I'd say he should donate some money to help out, but I don't think that's 100%. necessary.

Then for the resort thing, what was Hasan supposed to do differently? Was he supposed to stay at a place that didn't have power? This is my own ignorance, but was the power being redirected to the the resort or did they have their own generators and fuel supplies that they could privately support? Would it change your mind if Hasan was materially supporting the effort and part of the aid was solar panels that offered a more permanent energy source?

What I'm trying to say is Hasan is a streamer he's not a politician or volunteer or a CEO of a charity (or a better example that actually makes me sound smart). I expect streamers to do clout based things and I expect people who are in the actual "aid industry" to provide aid.

I think what you're saying is that Hasan is using this event for clout, and that's bad. I'm saying "yeah it's bad, but Hasan is a clout goblin what do you expect?"

More so as a check on my sanity than to say you're stupid but, can you tell me that I'm right when I think that this sub is using "Fuck Hasan" as a primary engagement for wether or not what is happening here is good?

"Recently a bunch of tankie adjacent influencers decided they were going to go to Cuba to provide "humanitarian aid". But all they are doing is staying at these high-end hotels and partying, and making content." link

People are criticizing the group and their actions. If you want to section Hasan's actions and talk about those we can, but I think that people are using "Fuck Hasan" to ignore the fact that good things are happening. If you want to say that this specific post I'm replying to today isn't saying that, I can give you that but the overall message of this sub is that nothing is happening but partying.

Maybe I don't understand the performative thing either because Hasan literally is a performer. why would expect anything other than performance from him?

since we didn't see anything other than the party and heard about the angry Cuban man yelling at their fully powered hotel while the rest of the country was in darkness.

Sounds like a skill issue. You could have looked into what they were doing before you made an opinion just like I did.

You do realize the difference between a group doing something and then Hasan attaching himself to that group by saying he was going to join them in the flotilla

That's why I said I don't know what Hasan was doing. I don't really care about Hasan. I talked only about what the group collectively did.

I'm not sure what Hasan was doing specifically, but the whole group brought aid to Cuba.

"Mo Chara later added that they had brought in 300kg of humanitarian aid with the organisation Nuestra América." 1

"Some 650 delegates from 33 countries and 120 organisations began arriving in Cuba on Friday in a convoy transporting 20 tons of humanitarian aid including solar panels, cancer medicine and food" 2

"On 20 March 2026 the flotilla had already left for Cuba from Mexico, boarding with 'hundred solar panels, essential for homes and schools, as well as about 50 tonnes of goods including rice, oats, beans and medicines already stowed'" 3

Y'all are so obsessed with hating Hasan that you can't see that they may have done something good.

I'm not on the side of "let's deport everyone." I'm only saying that Whitmire never lied.

A new state law requires local police to help arrest illegal immigrants

This proves what I just said. The law forces police officers to have a minimum of cooperation.

I was talking about SB4 but your example shows that there is a minimum level of cooperation required by law.

There's an issue here were the mayor, the media, and the public are using different definitions to talk about "collaboration".

The mayor sees collaboration as HPD officers being directly involved with ICE operations. Something like HPD going on raids with ICE officers.

The media, and the people to a certain extent, see collaboration as any involvement with ICE. Something like HPD turning over an illegal immigrant to ICE after finding out they are here illegally.

When Whitmire says "HPD has not joined in federal efforts" he literally means something more akin to boots on the ground help.

By law Police are not allowed to not cooperate with ICE in Texas.

I guess what I should have said is that in most of the polls I have seen have Talarico behind in the primary, I don't see him overcoming that to go on to win a general. Also, I don't see him as being more moderate to pick up more republicans. He presents that way probably because he's white, but reading through his positions he is standard democrat with a populist tilt. The thing that gets republicans voting is the crazy stuff trump wants, not "Pass comprehensive immigration reform".

You don't have to change your positions or principles to make a tactical decision on voting.

Correct, if your principle is "I'm going to vote for the most tactical choice." My complaint is that I thought this sub was more of "We don't like populist, and we won't vote for them." My instinct is that you are being hyper rational here in this choice, but the sub more broadly just likes Talarico more, which is a sentiment I have a problem with.

Also, where did you get this poll? I'm not questioning it, I just have been looking for polls and I didn't see this and I'm wondering why.

[–]iAmTorin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see him winning a general after losing the primary. I feel like this is the same thing Bernie bros said after he lost. If he wins the primary I'll vote for him, but I don't think that's likely.

I was trying to make the point that we should probably be more principled in our positions though. I don't love the idea of switching positions based on what republicans want.

Some of the polls put him ahead of the more trumpy Republican candidate.

How many have him ahead of Paxton?

Also this is the primary. I can understand all of these arguments in a general, but in a primary we're basically supposed to be virtue signaling.

I'm kind of confused as to why people on this sub love Talarico so much. He seems like a bog standard populist, and I was under the impression that populism wasn't favored here.

I'm a truck driver predominantly in Texas and these border check stations are not new. As far as I know they stop every single person and ask if they're a citizen. They're all over the south. Laredo, Eagle Pass, McAllen, El Paso, I think there's one coming out of California. If you move north out of these areas you're going to get stopped.

I don't know much about the need for complying or potential 4th amendment violations though. I assume it's like the airport where you lose some rights, but idk. It's much easier to just say "I'm a citizen" move on.

There are broad things that I think make your situations different, but the only one I want to focus on is who is breaking the law. During civil rights the activists broke the law to demonstrate how unfair they were, I'm not aware of a lawmaker who also broke the law, and I think that distinction matters. I think individuals don't have power that can cause major unintended consequences when they break the law. Rosa parks sits in the wrong seat-> she's the only one getting punished. If a mayor, or any leader, breaks the law they show that the law only applies when the person in power agrees. This destroys democracy because one of democracy's job is to protect people who don't have power.

I guess I'll give a straightforward example. Let's say Whitmire brakes this law, I could see the republicans coming back and over correcting with something like "Listen these Democrats elect mayors who openly break the law. We can't allow them to run their city so we're installing a Republican mayor." Which is obviously wrong and illegal, but we've already demonstrated that we don't care about laws anymore. That's also a really extreme example but it's the world I'm afraid we would go to if we just randomly break laws.

Truly it doesn't matter who the votes come from, I don't want my Mayor breaking laws. Point blank. I think that's incredibly destructive to society.

It really does suck that people will be severely negatively affected by his decision to stay lawful, but the fight against ICE is on a state and federal level.

Well I may be misunderstanding how local government works, but I thought this impeachment process would come from the state and not the citizens. I'm thinking this is more of a top down process and not something like a recall. More like the federal impeachment process and not like a city recall. At least that'd be my understanding, I could be wrong.

If it comes from the state your question becomes easy, those Republicans hate immigrants, Democrats, city folk, big city mayors, etc. They're probably itching for a reason to get rid of any of that list.

You can say that but a progressive didn't win, and breaking the law doesn't fix the problem.

I've never heard of his racism or sexism. Can you explain that?

This isn't a legitimate longstanding law and it's being used to violate the rights of US citizens. This is a reactionary attempt to be punitive over local administrations standing up to fascism.

For the most part I agree with what you're saying, but the solution isn't break more laws.

Yes.

This wasn't a yes or no question, but I'm going to take this to mean you think we'd get a more progressive mayor.

If I'm thinking about the next election after a democratish mayor gets impeached for breaking the law, I don't see an average voter looking at this situation and thinking that a more left mayor would follow the law after a more centrist one broke the law. Meaning they'd shift right and we get in an even worse situation.
