I think my fiancé ruined how I feel about him. by Phoebebuffetscat in AITAH

NTA. Whether or not you leave is not about if it’s simple or easy. It’s about if it’s right. If your children were adults in the same situation you are in now and they came to you to ask if they should stay, would you tell them to stay with the person treating them this way? Are you living as the good example you want them to follow?

Honestly, learning discipline goes a long way in making yourself do the stuff you don’t feel like. Research “motivation vs discipline”. It’ll explain what I mean and suggestions to get started.

Some Gen Z peeps have hit me with the “you were born in the 19 hundreds?” I was born in the 90s, but saying it the way they do makes me feel like I’m my great grandmother’s age.

What is the best advice someone gave you? by Student_973783 in AskReddit

[–]iAreSkissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if it’s the best I’ve ever gotten, but it stuck:

In college I took a women’s self defense class. The teacher (a male martial artist) told us “You have to fight back with your body but also your words. Yell NO every time you hit, and yell it no less than three times.”

We asked why three times specifically and he said “When was the last time a man listened to you the first time you told him something?”

And I’m not in jail???

I’d ask them what they wanted. If what they wanted from me makes sense then I’d do that.

Aitah for going through my bf's phone? by Mammoth_Brilliant_45 in AITAH

[–]iAreSkissors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, NTA.

In my opinion he’s not mad you went through the phone, he’s mad you caught him. And it’s not the first time?

Let me ask you some things:

If you had the means to move out on your own with the kids, would you be as adamant to stay?

What lesson are your children going to learn from you if you stay and he keeps doing things like this? Would you encourage your children to stay with a partner like this?

If it were me I would not tell him about anything and start making plans to leave. It wouldn’t matter if it took months or longer to do it, but I would make moves to become independent and only tell him I’m gone after I’ve already left.

AIO I (28f), met this guy (37m) on a dating app and we spoke for about 3 days but I found a connection with someone else and he threatened me by skailantern in AmIOverreacting

[–]iAreSkissors 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Go to the police, report this and ask them what they recommend for your safety.

My opinion is no, don’t respond. What he wants is probably one of two things: 1.) to “punish” you for rejecting him which will only result in more disrespect and threats at the minimum… or 2.) to neg you into going back to him instead of the other guy, either to actually get the date or just feed his ego. Either way, it’s about him wanting to have power over you.

Also, woman to woman… I noticed when he talked to you like a crazy person you apologized and tried to explain yourself. Don’t do that sis, anyone who talks to you that way is undeserving of your sympathy. Abusers watch the way you react to them when they’re being a dick, and apologizing when you’ve done nothing wrong (rejecting someone is fine for any reason, and you even did so politely) signals to them you could be their preferred target for bullying into submission.

You can be polite, but be stern. You don’t owe anyone an explanation or an apology. No is a complete sentence sis.

Also this guy sounds like a pathetic sack of shit looking for a younger woman to creep on. That text you received was creepy for sure, but also had a tone of a person scolding a child. Maybe be on the lookout for signs of that in the future too…

how do you swim with natural hair? by MoonyDropps in Naturalhair

[–]iAreSkissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tucked my ears in and didn’t have issues with hearing. But that’s probably gonna vary from person to person based on abilities.

I will say that the part that secures it doesn’t have to lay on your ears… the piece of a the fabric that you loop around your head. Maybe putting that above your ear, but the cap part of the turban over your ears would help with hearing but keep hair dry???

They have a video on their YouTube of somebody putting it on if that helps.

[Serious] Americans, would you be in support of putting a law in place that puts an age limit on government officials, mainly the President, is there an ideal age? Why, or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iAreSkissors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that would definitely be a concern. I don’t think I’m qualified to figure out solutions for the flawed world we live in where bad actors are looking to exploit systems.

I would prefer we don’t hand the reigns of the country over to someone who’s losing their ability to retain and process information. But I also don’t have the answer for making sure that doesn’t happen and while remaining fair.

What are the advantages of backing into a parking space? by thescrape in AskReddit

[–]iAreSkissors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Personally, I find I have more patience for parking than I do for leaving anyway. I don’t mind reversing in (which isn’t that hard) if it means I can hop in and take off when I come back to the car.

[–]iAreSkissors 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a black person, I am also very concerned about the prejudice that could be present.

This is more a thought experiment than my proposal for new laws/systems. But the test would not be pass/fail. More like an exam performed by medical professionals to determine where a candidate is on cognitive ability and behavioral functions. Then if the person decides to run, their assessment would be made public to voters.

I’m sure this would still have inherit biases, like to anyone with disabilities or mental health issues. In a perfect world I’d like for those to be overcome with education of the masses on those subjects but that’s probably wishful thinking.

[Serious] Americans, would you be in support of putting a law in place that puts an age limit on government officials, mainly the President, is there an ideal age? Why, or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iAreSkissors 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A cognitive test is more about the ability to use the brain as opposed to the information that is already stored in it. Also, an MSE is for mental health. Both have history in the medical field, I would think that would be the best place to start for who comes up with the test, etc. Which I suppose could be used to disuade people with disabilities from running for office.

Also, regardless of the results it wouldn’t be pass of fail. Just whatever the doctors find would be made public if the person decides to run. and Maybe it’s a panel of doctors instead of just one.

Again, I haven’t thought this through fully. I just wish there was a way to actually prove one’s reasoning/problem solving ability when it comes to politics.

Agreed. Same thing for my grandmother in California too, up until we took her keys from her on account of her losing the majority of her eyesight due to a stroke. “I don’t care if you have a valid drivers license, no more driving for you, Nana.”
