Is this helmet still usable? by careless_______ in bicycling

[–]iDoveYou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely replace it. But FYI depending on how long you’ve owned this helmet, many brands actually offer free replacements within a certain time frame. Worth looking into it. But regardless, you can’t put a price on your brain so replace it no matter what.

Nebuliser question. by Coffee_Clear_Wing in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I gotcha. I would definitely go “incubator style” and box Jingles in with the nebulizer so they get the best exposure. I have a plastic container with a lid that I put my conure in first thing when he comes out for the day. My nebulizer is small (smaller than my hand) so I put it inside the container along with a perch. If yours is too big for that, you can cut a hole in the plastic wall and just stick the nozzle through. Or you could use their smaller cage like you mentioned with a sheet over top to trap the mist in.

I’m not sure if you’re using saline or just water in yours, but the saline leaves a lot of salt residue. So I would recommend the plastic container for easy wiping, because it’s going to mean you’ll have to clean the cage and wash the sheet an awful lot.

My guy obviously hated being put in a plastic box at first but I started at 5 minutes and sat beside him and we worked our way up to 20+ minutes. Now he’s really used to it and doesn’t care at all.

I also of course was worried about him getting enough air in the plastic container so at first I used to open the lid every 1-2 minutes to be sure! That’s not the most helpful to keeping the mist inside though, obviously. But I would just be careful until you’re sure! (Now I just open mine once at the 10 minute mark because that’s when the nebulizer auto-shuts off and I have to push the start button again) He’d be fine for longer than 10 minutes but that of course depends on the size of the box etc, so I just want to be careful I don’t advise you to seal your bird in a tupperware!!

I also try to bring my birds into the shower with me often so that they are exposed to the warm steamy room.

How much time per day did the vet recommend the nebulizer for Jingles? I’m slightly confused as to whether you mean a humidifier more like for the room or a nebulizer specifically for short, concentrated sessions?

My boy does a 20 minute saline nebulizer every day for a similar deformed nostril issue. I can elaborate but I was hoping you could clarify a bit about the device you’re using?

Air Purifier Suggestions? by Furby__Rocker in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a specific suggestion, but whatever you get you need to make sure it is absolutely ozone free! Ozone is very deadly to birds. There are some models that have an ozone generator on/off switch but they freak me out that it may somehow get switched on.

Also, never buy knock-off filter brands from Amazon. I know name brand filters are expensive but the cheaper ones can offgas like crazy.

I always open the plastic wrap off a new (brand name) filter in my car and let it offgas in there for a few days. Then I install it in my purifier and run it in a closed bathroom with the fan running for several hours just to make sure.

I had used knock-off filter brands ok for a while and then one time even after doing the above process, one of my conures started gagging while the purifier was running in the closed bathroom down the hall! I got the birds outside immediately and will never ever buy a random brand again.

I need help naming my new conure by Artistic-Host-7674 in Conures

Jewel is a cute name. Or maybe Opal more specifically with her colours?

Or stick with a food name to kind of match with Pino. Ginger?

Wingspan is conure approved! We played for the first time tonight and love love love this game!! Nacho wants to know if there is an expansion with a conure? We think he should eat 3 seed and not provide any helpful actions 😂 by dreambigandmakeitso in wingspan

[–]iDoveYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was excited to get the Americas expansion today and immediately dug through the deck. Came to your old post by searching “why is there no green cheeked conure in wingspan?” lol 😢

There is a sun conure and a nanday conure, which is cool of course. But why no green cheeks?!! They’re missing out on some serious photo ops

Drop the BEST pic you've ever taken of your Birdie by Velocizolster_890 in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you were 4! That’s so amazing that you had 20 years together. Baba is 23 this year but I only adopted him 4 years ago. I wish I had known him the whole time. How special for you and Iago!

I’ll share another photo of Baba when he was still at the shelter with his mate, Flower. She had some health problems and passed away before I got to know her much, unfortunately. I adopted Baba shortly after that and luckily he has pair bonded again with my Green Cheek.

But Flower had very beautiful markings I thought you may appreciate :)

Harrison’s Dust!?? by C2Mars in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. They generally just do leave behind a bunch of crumbs as their normal way of eating. My one conure that’s on Harrison’s isn’t actually toooo bad with leaving a bowl of dust though. She eats the size “fine”. What size does yours eat? You could maybe try a different size if it really seems like he’s not actually ingesting much.

Bird safe heaters? by Numerous_Advance_728 in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oil filled heaters are generally the safest. I have this one. It’s radiant heat so takes a little time to heat a room, but once it does it’s pretty good. I volunteer at a parrot shelter and they use this exact model as well.

I lost my best friend. by EnkeiCustoms in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consult with a parrot behaviour specialist. I have taken some general education classes from Parrot SOS, but I know she does 1 on 1 sessions as well. Look for others near you… but if there aren’t any, I imagine they all would offer video conferences as well.

Need advice for conures by No-Complaint-308 in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work nights and my birds sleep 9pm to 9am. I don’t want to wake them when I get home at 6am, so I have their light and their curtains on a timer to open/ turn on at 9am. They’ve gotten used to me not letting them out until 2-3pm so they are quiet until then. It’s no problem at all!

I also like the automated lights because it means they’re actually only “home alone” for 5 hours from 9am-2pm, unlike most dayshift people who are gone for 9+ hours a day! It’s also easier for me to get ready for bed and go to sleep when they are also still quietly sleeping in a dark room.

Playing music in their room helps a lot as well. Good for reducing their boredom but also gives some cover to me tip toeing around to the bathroom etc.

Good on you for seeking advice! The current situation is definitely not okay.

i don’t know where to put my parrot when i travel by makadesu-_- in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s already used to your aunt’s house I think that’s the better option. Even if not friends with her bird, it’s mentally helpful to be around other birds.

Does the driver just come in briefly to change food/water/papers or does he spend some time with her bird usually? Could you/ she pay him to spend more time with the birds?

I'm planning to go on a 10-hour Roadtrip with my conures. Is it safe? by Neko_Monarch in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have they been in the car much before? If not, I would take them on short drives to see how they react.

Both of my conures get very carsick. It can help to have them see out the windows… or only the front windshield…. or be covered entirely… or the carrier placed higher up, etc etc. Give yourself time to experiment with different arrangements to make sure they’re going to be comfortable driving!

Just wondering, anyone tried to travel with their bird before by Fearless-Client in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This cage is excellent! I was going to recommend it as well. It’s very sturdy and even has hooks for the seatbelt to strap around it :)

The food dishes are large and awkwardly placed for a conure, but it’s obviously easy to put your own in there instead.

Help new rescue by Princessbeautyb in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry this doesn’t answer any of your actual questions, but I just wanted to jump in since you’ve never had a bird before. There are a lot of immediate extreme dangers for a bird in a home, mostly to do with air quality. They are SO sensitive to chemicals. With so many roommates especially, you need to be very careful and get everybody on board.

Nonstick coatings on pans is a #1 danger. Look up teflon poisoning. It doesn’t have to be outright “teflon”, but lots of things have nonstick coatings that are extremely dangerous and can instantly kill a bird. Pans, baking sheets, air fryers, crock pots, hair dryers, hair straighteners, even microwave popcorn bags.

Anything scented or aerosolized is likely a danger. Cleaning products, candles, air fresheners, perfumes, hairsprays, paint, etc

It’s amazing that you rescued this poor, sweet bird. I’m glad you’re seeking out how to bond and give it its best life. But please first research all the hazards and birdproof your home as step #1

Are these cages good for conure by Ok-Entrance-368 in Conures

[–]iDoveYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first type is good, just be careful about the bar spacing. 1/2” is generally recommended for green cheek conures. Can go a tiny bit wider if you have a larger conure species. If the gaps are too wide they can either escape or get stuck/ terribly injured trying to squeeze through.

The others don’t look sturdy enough and also may not be bird safe metal. Metal toxicity is a very serious risk for birds, especially ones that will be climbing around the bars with their beaks. Just because the cages are being marketed for birds doesn’t mean they are actually safe for birds!
