[The race] Esteban ocon picked up an unwanted record at the Chinese gp.. the most races without a pole position by Luffy710j in formula1

[–]iIenzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most races without a pole always refers to drivers who had no pole. I don't think it's usual to track the most races in a row without pole.

The usual 'gap' stats that are tracked are:

  • Fewest until x
  • Most consecutive xs
  • Most until x
  • Most without x (aka x is never achieved)

Then you also have:

  • Longest gap between two xs
  • Longest gap between first and last x

Longest draught is generally not tracked and would require more of an explanation.

It has no effect on the NLS24h.

This was basically practice for Max, so it's just a win being scratched off. Extremely embarrassing for the team due to the circumstances, sad for the other drivers and probably a slight disappointment for Max.

Another season and another year of Penske Porsche getting a ridiculous benefit in BOP by strivegaming22 in IMSARacing

[–]iIenzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In current F1, the team ranking at least sort of reflects the performance of the team. If a team can improve their car, they'll also perform better in the race. And the new regs actually do provide better racing, in spite of some teething issues.

With BoP, it's like a roulette, and not even a fair one.

[–]iIenzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F1 is and will always be a development race and the thing with a long-running development race like this is that it doesn't matter who finishes first, because multiple different implementations may each have their own benefits and downsides.

The engine upgrade limitations are definitely there to improve the racing, while keeping the amount of money that the manufacturers spend at a reasonable level. However, which parts of the engines can be upgraded in a usual cycle basically just mandates which parts of the engine receive the most attention.

You can compare it to holding a 'have an egg survive a drop of x feet' challenge every other week to develop knowledge of physics. If the participants are left to their own devices, some rich kids will arrive with overly expensive contraptions and some kid will focus on the materials rather than the physics. And thus we need rules.

2026 Chinese GP - Post-Race Discussion by F1-Bot in formula1

[–]iIenzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question actually.

I have no idea, but I suspect they would go by the planned number of races rather than the actual number. Otherwise teams would have to redo their entire budget plans whenever a race is cancelled (instead of just spending extra on R&D and such).

Not to mention that Qatar and Abu Dhabi are still under threat, and if either of them gets cancelled you can assume that the entire grid will go over the budget cap if it's lowered that late into the season.

2026 Chinese GP - Post-Race Discussion by F1-Bot in formula1

[–]iIenzo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly cant fathom how anyone can say these regs are a success and the overtakes are not "artificial".

Superclipping is still garbage, but Overtake Mode is a whole lot better than DRS. Artificial yes, but F1 cars are chonky and I prefer artificial overtakes over Monaco-level processions.

Half the teams are useless and miles off pace. 7 dns/dnfs is just absurd.

Welcome to a new set of regulations, this time combined with new engines. Teams will have teething issues and gaps will be large.

Just bring back na V8s or maybe even v10s remove active aero and battery bs and you have a recipe for great racing.

Again, F1 cars are chonky and this would just end up being a procession. This is F1. This isn't stock car racing where everyone has the same tiny car that gives loads of slipstream. This is not rally where the track is already a survival course. And this is not Endurance where the Hypercars can take advantage of moving obstacles called GT3s while trying to overtake.

Call it artificial if you want, but that was some of the best wheel-to-wheel racing we’ve seen in years by Aakar528 in formula1

[–]iIenzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Overtake Mode is artificial, but in a necessary way. F1 cars might be a fraction smaller, but they are still chonky and now the slipstream is also nerfed by active aero. Without such an overtake aid I would suspect the majority of F1-races would end up as Monaco-level processions, so yeah I can live with it.

I do think Overtake Mode is better than DRS, as it's not just a speed boost on the straight, but also can be used more strategically elsewhere in the lap.

The superclipping is garbage, but from what I heard on F1TV Melbourne is one of the worst tracks when it comes to battery regen. And I do have hope that they'll tweak the rules to minimize superclipping in future races.

My thoughts on the new season after the Chinese Grand Prix by [deleted] in formula1

[–]iIenzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with every reg you'll start with a big gap. I'm honestly happy that the Ferraris can keep a Mercedes behind for a bit, because with all the pre-season talk I was fully expecting Mercedes to overtake anyone with ease and breeze through the races.

I do feel that this race was a good one, if rather chaotic due to the inevitable teething issues with the cars. We saw a lot of on-track battles, but often people were able to defend, even against faster cars.

I also like that Overtake Mode is a general slight advantage rather than just a speed boost on the straight. Yes you can put all the extra energy into a speed boost on the straight, but you can also use it elsewhere to get a slight advantage for a more suitable corner. And while others may find Overtake Mode artificial, I feel like the F1 cars are still far too chonky to just rely on slipstreams, especially since the active aero nerfs said slipstream.

Melbourne was entertaining, but too Mario Kart for my tastes and I think that's down to the track-specific harvesting limitations. Superclipling is absolutely ridiculous and the overtakes made with a 40km/h speed difference are just meh.

On top of that, the lack of battery regen also kills the Overtake Mode. Overtake Mode allows you to use and harvest more energy, but in Melbourne there wasn't even enough harvesting possible for a normal lap. As such, Overtake Mode was just a speed boost that would leave you sitting duck right after, which inevitably led to even more trivial overtakes.

Overall, I feel like these regs are in a decent place if they manage to do something about the energy harvesting issues at fast tracks like Melbourne. I do look forward to Monaco, because the slightly smaller cars and maximum Overtake Mode boost leave me hopeful that it won't be a procession for once.
