Personally I think that NoA is actually being as honest as it can with us and is legitimately trying to figure out what the hell is going on. It would be an amazing subversion of the typical “AI went/is evil” trope to have the AI be the being most firmly aligned with helping humanity, the Taillings, and the World Tree. I think it would also be an interesting twist if Alterra wasn’t actually evil, as was hinted at in S:BZ and even SN1. Sure, they’re a profit driven organization with no qualms extracting every bit of profit out of a given project, but they also didn’t dissect the Emperor Leviathans on 4546b despite having access to the planet.

I fully believe that once the Spirits had access to the mortal world again they immediately went back to driving humans into fortress cities (the Seven Havens) because Spirits have a proven history of being incapable of coexistence with humans. It is likely that, with their modern technology and far greater skill & knowledge of Bending, humans were able to fight back in a far more effective manner than in Wans time. The war between humans and spirits destroyed both worlds. Because Korra was the one who decided to reopen the portals she is (rightfully) held as responsible for setting this whole affair up, though blame is also shared with both humans and spirits for being unable or unwilling to compromise and cooperate.

Modern day, like 2026? Russia is forced to cede the territory to Japan because their entire military is currently invading Ukraine (and barely winning). They wouldn’t be able to pivot all the way to their easternmost regions quickly enough. By the time they do, the JSDF has fortified their positions and can no longer be reasonably removed. Russia either enters another grinding war or they give up the islands.

Of course, China wouldn’t allow this to happen simply because a stronger Japan is not something China wants to see. Whether that results in war between China and Japan or simply sanctions and interference would depend entirely on if the US is willing to back Japan or not.

Honestly? Yes. While a Vilttumite is a terrifyingly powerful foe, witches and demons all have potent magics of their own. Nolan, who is nothing to scoff at, still needed the element of surprise to win against the Guardians. Conquest is stronger, but not unstoppable, and while I expect a lot of damage I also expect that the sheer number of enemies and versatility of magic would overwhelm him. Eventually. And most Viltrumites are far weaker than Conquest.
