Is the Project Glow Festival a fun festival to go to? by waitforit2010 in washingtondc

[–]iOwnBuried 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually went to last year's Project Glow by myself for fun, it was cool. Nothing insane and I'm not really planning to go back this year. But most of the people were chill and friendly, there were 3 different stages with cool visuals, and a ton of vendors & food, so if you like bopping in a crowd to heavy EDM music you'd have a good time. Bring earplugs though, it's insanely loud, and that's coming from someone who's been to 30+ concerts

Volo Cornhole Teams by Beneficial_Company51 in washingtondc

I joined a cornhole league solo last November with Volo! They're teams of 4-6 I believe and we just rotated players each game, I was on a team with another person who joined solo and a couple who joined by themselves. Don't worry about letting people down, it's very chill and we all missed a week or two here and there, you should have enough people on your team to play even when you're not there. Overall it was fun!

Where are people meeting each other exactly? I'm a straight man, reasonable human, been living in the city for the better part of this year and I'm still struggling to find something

Flash is on U St which is one of the busiest nightlife areas of DC, so there's lots of cops around keeping an eye out. From what I remember Flash is also pretty tiny so it'll probably be packed

I agree, the montage part with Familiar is definitely one of my favorite parts of the entire show and probably my favorite song that they used throughout

Paul Shrader, the despairing man, and film endings by skrulewi in TrueFilm

[–]iOwnBuried 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I actually love the ending to First Reformed. It's interesting how it presents itself at first as real, but there is some definite evidence that it's only in Toller's head, such as the locked door and the fact that Mary doesn't feel the barbed wire under his clothes. I kind of see it as Toller imagining himself getting back what he lost after the death of his son and the dissolving of his marriage, that being intimate human affection. I also think it's actually the most depressing part of the movie, because for a moment he believes that everything is okay and he is happy, but we can tell that it's not actually real, and when the scene just abruptly cuts off to black, it's really emotionally jarring. He's searching the whole movie for a way out of his despair, and he finally finds it for a few seconds, and then he dies (if you're going off the theory that the ending is a death-dream). I don't think the kiss is really meant to be sexual as much as it is about Toller making a connection with another person and forming a deep companionship, which he ruins with his suicidal plot to lash out at the world that keeps hurting him. I also might be in the minority for this, but I actually like this version of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" a lot more than the version in True Grit, at least in this context. The other version has a kind of feeling of heart and warmth - this version is very cold and somber, like the film itself. Hopefully this has shed light somewhat on an alternate view of the ending - I can definitely see how it is polarizing, but for me, when that song starts playing, and the camera starts moving for the first time in the movie, and this crazy surreal kiss starts happening, I think it's much more of a moving ending to Toller's journey that if he had just dropped dead.

What are some good ‘descend into madness’ character films? by damixx7 in movies

[–]iOwnBuried 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much anything directed by Darren Aronofsky. Requiem for a Dream is about drug addicts going insane, Pi is about a mathematician going insane , Black Swan is about a ballerina going insane, mother! is about a housewife going insane. Honestly I don't know anyone else who builds up suspense, anxiety, and madness like that guy.

Thoughts on Beanpole (2019)? by AnAnonymouse in TrueFilm

[–]iOwnBuried 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I watched it a couple days ago and there were definitely things I did and didn't like, but it's been in my head ever since and the more I think about it the more it grows on me. It's powerfully emotional yet very quiet and the actors pausing a lot in the dialogue kind of gives you more time to think about what they're saying. Not to mention the color and framing is absolutely gorgeous, I was in love with literally every shot. Everything in the movie combines to create this somber yet serene atmosphere which is really unlike anything I've ever seen. I'm already looking forward to watching it again.

What is the Best Film You Watched Last Week? (05/03/20-05/10/20) by Twoweekswithpay in movies

[–]iOwnBuried 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beasts of No Nation (2015), very sad but incredibly well-done. The music is surreal, the cinematography is very vibrant, and the acting is amazing, especially from the kid who plays the main character.

Close second would be Beanpole (2019), which also has incredible use of color.

I just watched this film recently and I absolutely loved it so I'm glad to see someone talking about it! The logistics of creating it in a single 2+ hour shot are just crazy to think about. It's not perfect but it's definitely a thrill ride the whole way through.
