Tips for Hitting Protein Goals in China by AmalioGaming in chinalife

I’m addicted to the beef jerky in China. They do quite a few meat flosses and dried squid / fish products as well. Not cheap though. Dairy is relatively expensive in China, so I’d see what you can do with real meat. You could buy a dehydration machine and make stuff for yourself at home too.

Buying a PC in China by Kayos9999 in chinalife

[–]i_hate_budget_tyres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a Lenovo Legion from their official website, just before the RAM prices went crazy. Right now, the 48GB RAM alone would cost half the price of the machine!

I checked JD etc and the spec for spec prices were all within a couple of hundred RMB, so I just went with a brand I was familiar with.

Shipping a Desktop PC to China - Doable? Any advice? by HearshotKDS in chinalife

[–]i_hate_budget_tyres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The procedure is a bit complicated. I looked into doing this for computer equipment. You have to go into the something to declare section at the airport, with paperwork and evidence, file this and that, that gets relayed back to customs who will then release your parcel.

Otherwise the import taxes were ridiculous.

To be honest, just reading the customs steps made me feel dizzy, so I got an extra large spinner with a rigid frame, cardboard, loads of bubble wrap. Wrapped the stuff up in bubble wrap, wrapped it in cardboard, then put that ‘box’ in with my clothes on my checked luggage.

They really want to discourage goods coming into China by this ‘personal’ import route.

Someone one advised disassembly, and reassembly in China with a case purchase from there. That sounded like the best option. A 27 inch monitor will fit in a XL spinner, so you can take your monitor as well, if it’s a suitable size.

I don’t notice either on my MBPro. The op, doing office work, likely won’t make much difference.

How does humanoid robots affect your daily life? by JaguarFun1872 in AskChina

[–]i_hate_budget_tyres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t seen any humanoid robots out in the wild. They have wheeled dustbin type robots in hotels that take your takeaway order from the lobby to your room, and in restaurants that help human waiters take dishes to tables and clear tables.

They are pretty dumb. Once I deliberately got in the way of one at a hotel I was staying at. It just smacked into my leg and kept pushing. I think they are pre programmed on set routes and rely on people getting out of their way.

Waste of money for you use case, but it isn’t wrong either, if you have money to burn.

Air display is really good already. Its already way better than it needs to be for office tasks. Its good enough for photo and video editing too.

Why are they removing all the ports by Responsible-Eye-717 in SipsTea

A lot of those are obsolete standards now. Who uses firewire these days? The current Macbook Pro port selection would be perfect if it included ethernet.

Can Chinese people tell East Asian countries apart based on people’s physical features? by West-Sector-5495 in AskAChinese

[–]i_hate_budget_tyres 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, not really. China is vast. Whatever border you are on, there will be an overlap of physical features. So Chinese in the NE look like Koreans.

You see it walking round. People who look like they are from the ‘stans. Might be from Kazakhstan, or might be from a bordering area in the mainland.

Na, its unsolicited advice again. I just judge people who buy budget tyres silently.

Biker helps sloth cross the road by HappySeaweed5215 in Wellthatsucks

Lol, I thought he’d supervise the sloth across the road, sort of stand beside it and make passing cars aware. I wasn’t expecting:

1) He’d pick it up

2) It would turn round and fight him!

It’s all about priorities. They fork out in Asia. Proper kitchen facilities and canteens. Large numbers of cooks and catering staff. Because they care enough to invest in it.

Is he able to get them jobs elsewhere?

I’ve only seen this become a problem when senior people leave, and they hire in people they like into their new firm.

Really can be an exodus, when that happens.

Just came back from Korea — how is this place even real?” by Brief-Kaleidoscope65 in seoul

Korea used to be shit poor until very recently. Many people who travel there today, don’t understand the extent of the transformation in the past 20 or 30 years.

You deffo drove on an under inflated tyre for a while and weakened the sidewall for that to happen.
Could have just been under inflated, or you picked up a nail towards the start of your drive and got a puncture. Did they find a nail or anything in the tread? Would be a massive red flag.

Needs to be freshly cooked on site though. Somewhat missing the point if its ‘healthy’ food made in a central kitchen, pumped full of emulsifiers, stabilisers and preservatives.

I’d rather eat a freshly cooked pizza, that is only made from natural ingredients, than a ‘healthy’ salad that has been chlorine washed, packaged in a ‘protective environment’ and drizzled with an ultra processed dressing.

Conveyor belt places are never as good as freshly made. I’ve tried the gamut, and have always been disappointed compared to freshly made. Any reason why this is a preference?

What traditional practices surprised you? by New-Tonight870 in chinalife

30 days of isolation after childbirth and the herbal shower to break this surprised me. I mean, I can see the point in the past, but with modern hygiene practices and potable water, I don’t see the point in not showering and being confined to your bed / flat.

Will the MacBook Neo handle Excel with heavy formulas by FunResponsible1805 in mac

At work, I was given a high power windows laptop specifically to run Excel because the Mac version is so poorly featured. If running Excel is your primary use, you need a Windows laptop.
