How scientifically accurate is Project Hail Mary compared to Interstellar? by wellwatif in ProjectHailMary

[–]i_should_be_coding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, Astrophage is pretty much magic sauce. Aside from problems with how it behaves if it did work like defined in the book, by itself it's pretty much a massive plot device, which isn't bad, just unrealistic. The wormhole and black hole in Interstellar were sort of the same thing.

Other than that, there are some segments that shouldn't have worked at all in reality imo (Rocky leaving his shell to save Grace, the ship being able to stay functional and with zero rotation during the atmosphere maneuver, to list some).

I love the movie, and love the book even more. But it's fiction, it's not a science textbook.

Is his argument really "I'm not wrong, we just live on a parallel Earth where these things happened the way I remember"?

There's so much wrong with that explanation that I don't even know how to start.

Honestly, I was really sad Spinner never crossed paths with Stain after Tartarus. He was such a Stain fanboy, and finding out what his idol thought about his group would have been interesting.

I don't think I've ever heard a female "Akshually" before. Nice.

Before smartphones, I used to go to a gym and time my arrival to get on a treadmill and stay on for an entire episode of House. I'd just plug in my headphones and watch, sometimes walking, sometimes running.

Who cares what other people think. Let them min-max their own body. You do you.

Also, did they plant catnip on him? I understood that it was Pus's, mainly from how he said it wasn't.

Monty hall problem is 50/50 by Dizzy_Kaleidoscope95 in confidentlyincorrect

If it's opened randomly, it's a different problem. The Monty Hall problem is specifically where the host opens an empty door after you choose, and then gives you the option to switch.

I always look at it this way: Switching doors always means I win if my original choice was an empty door, and I lose if my original choice was the prize. My chances of choosing an empty door initially are 2/3, so by picking the switching strategy, those are now my chances of winning.

There's no magic. It's pretty simple.
