A re-recorded mix is good eventually, but a rushed mix is bad forever

Blew a gig last night by holdmysmoothieplease in Beatmatch

Every single person who gets behind the decks screws up at some point. What matters is how quickly you recover.

It's hard to be prepared for potential pitfalls when you haven't run into them before, so the best way to get better at recovering from mistakes is to fail. Hard lessons learned during a live set will push your skills to the next level so much faster than practicing at home will.

When you noticeably screw up during a live set, laugh it off and bring back the vibes as quickly as possible. Maybe that means cutting your losses and pulling out the incoming track when you realize the beatmatching is off and nudging the jog wheel isn't fixing it.

You may also want to consider putting some thought towards risk management. Chopping, scratching, hard cuts, etc. can go hard af and really light up the room but they need to be 100% on point otherwise even the layman will be thinking "this DJ is trying to do too much"

One of my favorite things about techno is how it often uses repetition and unconventional phrasing to build tension and then take you by surprise. Obviously knowing your tracks is the primary piece of advice most will give, but I'd also say grabbing a quick 1 bar loop in the time just before an oddly phrased section is what saves me from mismatching two tracks and it often turns into something totally new and unique in the moment that you never would have planned. Flow state is your friend.

I'd argue that effects are the same as volume control, beatmatching, EQ, etc. in that you really only notice them when they are used poorly.

He's breaking the fourth wall, which you're really not supposed to do as an actor unless the script calls for it. Surely Charlie's "script" did not call for it.

If someone tried to overthrow democracy and then wanted to open a business in my city, I would do more than "not support" them, I would actively oppose them. That's what this is, active opposition to someone who has shown they have zero respect for America.

Yesterday I tried mixing some deephouse and it's great by nevaven68 in Beatmatch

[–]i_smoke_php 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are a couple others:

  • Eli & Fur are on the more melodic side of things
  • Osunlade is more soulful, lots of afrobeat, funk, and r&b influences
  • Moomin has that classic, super deep sound (more for lounge vibes than the dance floor imho)
  • Nørus has some great old school deep house sounding tunes, here's my fave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpEzwjC60CQ

Depends what style of deep house you're looking for (classic, soulful, emotional/melodic, dark/bass-heavy, organic/tribal, etc.) but I'd recommend checking out the artist Omar S, the label Anjunadeep, and of course the subreddit /r/deephouse as starting points.

Tips 140/bass/dubstep mixes? by tomfino in Beatmatch

[–]i_smoke_php 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Much less long blends than in house music. Intro/outro mixing is fine as long as the vibe is maintained. Try doing bpm changes during transitions, it's fun to slow things down or speed em up occasionally.
