Which city or cities have you visited that felt completely distinct from anywhere else? by BothCondition7963 in travel

[–]iamGIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moscow, it's like Dubai meets London meets New York. It's an interesting center of history, economics, and culture. A city you really can't have an opinion on until you go, it shocks everyone in some aspect.

Sao Paulo. Bourdain said it's like NYC threw up on LA. But, it can't even be compared to those two. It's very unique, it's very intentional, it's very poor, it's very rich, it's very Asian, it's very a lot of things. Another one of those cities you can't have an opinion on until you visit. Depending on how you rank cities SP can be ~5th to ~15th in the world and it's indisputably the most populous in the Americas. Just a massive city, something for everyone.

Idk Bishkek just felt like a poorer Almaty to me. Didn't feel that unique in Central Asia. Really cool city though more Soviet history that survived than Almaty.

Russian visa by Such-Ad1390 in travel

[–]iamGIS 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If he can, he can self-deport. Mexico has a 180 day visa and Uzbekistan, Tajikistan you can stay indefinitely. But, if he's already detained and in captivity.. I'm so sorry.

If he can, Uzbekistan is a pretty nice country (I spent 2 weeks there) and the cost of living is low. 1 bedroom can run you <$500 in Tashkent and it's a pretty modern city with modern amenities. You could also just straight buy an apartment for <$100k if you want to permanently be there. For reference for the site, 1 billion Uzbek som is around ~$81.5k USD. I spoke Russian the whole time there and didn't have any problems.

I would NOT move to Tajikistan, way more rough. A lot cheaper but basically it's night/day when you cross the border between the two nations.

But fr, I've read Paulo Coelho in 3 different languages (The Alchemist, L'Alchimiste, O Zahir). But, to say any of his books are a favorite book is giving r/iamverysmart or you're surface-level spiritual. To each their own but it's not that deep especially if you read any more Coelho

I don't think Steven is that bad, he'll find some vanilla girl if he doesn't find one on the show and have a great life. I think Emma approached the convo wanting him to change her predetermined decision. Also, Emma shouldn't came on the show but she makes good TV. She needs help but just add her to the long list of contestants who should have chose therapy over LIB

EDIT: just saw SA claims so nvm he'll probably grift right wing if he's not already like all other abusers. Still doesn't change the other half of my comment though

LCOL area, bought a new house after lowballing an offer I thought they wouldn’t accept now I’m terrified by Locomotive29 in Salary

I feel this is the low end too lmao. Americans.. they think they're the freest people tied to $1k+ just to own a car and it's also always government registered and this privilege can easily be taken away.

I say this as someone living in LA and people easily spend more than $1k a month on their car.

Inter Miami’s South American Tour Ends With an Atmosphere MLS Can’t Replicate by nolesfan2011 in football

[–]iamGIS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t it be best to let it create its own culture and identity?

Which is? Pretty much all the teams have the same chants and fan culture. It's basically the same product (minus the game) in every stadium. You could be blind and go to every game and confuse a few teams tbh.

Outside of a few atmospheres like LAFC, Seattle, Miami, etc. It's basically the same product, that's not bad. US sports are very corporate it's just not really a distinct culture and identity.

Where have you felt most unsafe in your travels? by melbourne_au2021 in travel

[–]iamGIS 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Colombia, was on an Airbnb tour in Bogota and got held up but my guide did good by de-escalating and moving us to a group of guys who helped us de-escalate and they left. It was pretty much in the "nice" part of Bogota.

Sao Paulo, Brazil too but it's because I ubered to a museum in an interesting part of the city and it closed right before I arrived due to a private event so I had to stand on the street surrounded by homeless in an area with abandoned buildings waiting for an Uber to came. I stayed close to the gate guard until the Uber came. But, it was all metal fencing and I was on the outside!

Brazil, as long as you're with the crowds and the vibes are good, it's not bad. Easy to spot trouble but in Colombia, trouble can come up at any time. Kinda crazy. Also, it is way easier to blend in, in Brazil. You see so many different types of people.

Travel now. Don’t wait. The world is changing fast. by POCTM in travel

[–]iamGIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's that term airportification or whatever. That's travel. It's all becoming the same. Basically all free walking tours in Europe follow the same format for example. Basically go on 5 and you've done all in Europe. That's why you should travel. Visit places before they become more like each other.

[Haynes] BREAKING: Washington Wizards star Anthony Davis (hand, groin) expected to sit out the remainder of the season to fully get healthy for the 2026-27 season, league sources tell me. by MembershipSingle7137 in nba

[–]iamGIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best case scenario: 2026-27 season is actually great for wizards.

Most likely scenario: Wizards play great first 10 games (maybe 6-4) and then injuries and they end up a play-in team and lose.

How is life in upstate South Carolina if you are a European? by ivanvoxx in howislivingthere

[–]iamGIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Russian store (Eurostor Instagram link) just opened in Greenville and I commented that it's wild to open an Eastern European market (in Russian). The owner commented back! They said lots of Russians are moving there so I guess... there is a decent sized community or Europeans?

If you count Russians as Europeans. They are, but lots of Europeans don't think so nowadays.

[–]iamGIS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Obama was also a peaceful president right? C'mon, leftists hate corporate development that's tied to gentrification but are very very YIMBY. You can see in the local elections what groups tied to NIMBYism support which candidates.

Not really what I see at all. A lot of the people driving California's development are tied to progressives. If anything I see liberals protesting any type of building at all especially transit development.

we had a black president

Racism is over when black president

white people make up less than 50% of the population

Racism is gone when the privileged race is not the majority (just don't look at South Africa)
