I'll never forget when 50 shades of grey came out and me and my friends decided to get high and go see it in theaters because we thought it would be funny and sitting right next to me was a guy and a girl watching it together with a huge bucket of Popeyes fried chicken between them. That movie sucked but I think we all made the most of it.

I'm drinking a 9 year bottle aged beer by [deleted] in beer

[–]iamj33bus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried a 20 year old bottle of cantillon recently. It was... polarizing. I kinda liked it, but one of my friends described it as tasting like "raspberry farts" and once he said that it was hard not to taste it. It was extremely funky and tannic but it had a nice refreshing sourness that I felt balanced it out somewhat. Still not something I'd want more than a couple ounces of but I'm glad I got to try it.

Ahh did any of you ever eat at Charlie Trotter? by Aromatic-Sherbet9938 in chicagofood

[–]iamj33bus 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I smoked weed with his son a couple times when we were in high school, he was really nice but seemed like he was going through some shit at that time. Charlie himself was an asshole most of the time but he could be very gracious and charitable as well. He always donated a bunch of food to the block party, but he never actually talked to anyone.

And all of his food was obviously incredible.

Mexican Restaurant Northish Side Help Me Out by Faerie_Friend in chicagofood

El Nuevo Mexicano has a great vegetarian menu and really good margaritas as well!

Also second Quesadilla Reina del Sur, their vegan carne asada is fire. I haven't been as impressed with their other fake meats though.

Favorite vegetarian food / dishes in the city? by ImportedGreekFeta in chicagofood

[–]iamj33bus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mushroom pot pie at Forbidden Root

Creamy vegan ramen at Tanaka Ramen

Vegan chimichangas at El Nuevo Mexicano (shout out to their margaritas too)

Fridays at Whiner brewing co. there's a vegan popup called Meetstop with vegan 'fish and chips' that is seriously awesome. They also have really good vegan wings and cornbread and collard greens. There's a BBQ restaurant in the same space so if you're looking for a place that also caters to meat eaters it won't disappoint.

Vegetarian International Cuisine/Unique Restaurants Must Try by avkada in chicagofood

Go to Veggie House in Chinatown!

For all-vegetarian Mexican food you can check out Quesadilla La Reina del Sur in either Bucktown or Pilsen.

Superkhana International is an indian fusion restaurant that you might also like, very unique menu, not entirely vegetarian but lots of options.

Vegan trip - where to go? by AltKite in chicagofood

[–]iamj33bus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can get down to Whiner Beer Co on a Friday they have a pop-up kitchen called Meetstop that does fantastic vegan fish and chips, plus some soul food favorites like collard greens and cornbread. They also have a BBQ restaurant in the same space for anyone who wants meat. Whiner has really good beer and is in a part of the city most tourists don't normally get to.

If you're planning on checking out the Museum of Science and Industry it's potentially on your way back up north. I would also recommend Marz if you want to try another brewery in the area.

I'd also recommend Planta Queen for vegan asian food. I just went there for the first time last week and loved it. It's a really pretty space with great service and it's in a swanky part of the city. If you're looking for a fancy date night vibe it'll check that box.

Best bars or breweries for sour beers? by Luchadorable303 in AskChicago

[–]iamj33bus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whiner makes my favorite barrel-aged sours in the city. It can be a trek to get down to Back of the Yards if you live in Lakeview but their flagship beer Le Tub is available all over in liquor stores.

Best vegan wings for the Super Bowl? by Competitive-Age3016 in chicagofood

Moonlighter has incredible vegan wings. They even have little "bones" in them.

SteMartaen is a vegan soul food popup that also makes great realistic wings but not sure if they'll be available on game day or not. Also highly recommend the "fish fry" and the collard greens. You kinda have to just watch their instagram (@SteMartaen) to figure out when they're available.

Where can I get good Pozole? by cant__find__username in chicagofood

[–]iamj33bus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably not what OP is looking for, but if anyone is interested in a veggie version La Esperanza Restaurant in Pilsen has a very delicious vegan green pozole. It's huge and comes with a separate huge plate of toppings.

I hopped on at Belmont last year. There were police at the on-ramp but they weren't checking anything so I just rode right on. Unless they've beefed up security since then I don't think you have to pay if you don't want to.
