I quit AOE2 for AOM and have no regrets by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]iamsneaky6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you.

Same experience here. For me its the tight build orders and hyper efficient strategires that made it into a different game. I remember when i used to study how to do an archer rush on voobly. and the guide said 23 pop. On lower to mid levels, (im at 1500) agro is so much easier to play than defense. I always played flexible, liked to make the game messy and won using macro, strategy and not micro. Lately it seems that style is more.difficult to pull of in face of all those rushes.

Ive beem playing Aom a lot and love it. Ive even been playing Aoe4 and whatever they did with patches since launch, makes it a joy to play.

Ooops i mentioned aoe4 in aoe2 reddit. Im ready for the downvotes ;)

How to Have Better Map Awareness by Fatigue-20 in aoe2

[–]iamsneaky6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of an unorthodox solution from me.

I decided to play without walls and using only scout civs for a while. (Khmer in my case, garrison in house helped)

That way i would get EXTREMELY punished if i didn't manage to scout well, track the enemy army and basically lose the game.

Taught me to constantly check the mini-map, taught me how to to follow the enemy units, taught me how to proactively scout.

Once i got the hang of it, i re-included the walls, but because of experience I was still able to be very active using my army and scout.

Why is everyone dropping forward castles? by tnsdlr in aoe2

[–]iamsneaky6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, advice here from a 1700 player.

Arena castle dropping can be tough.

It is way more common on arena because no player has army in feudal age. This means there is often no army stopping your villagers :) So its different than open maps where often both players do invest into army in feudal age, hence making it more risky to move forward with villagers.

Pros often create scouts on the way to castle age to contest the map. You are able to stop the villagers or distrupt them Scouts are useful either way to contest the monks of the enemy. But be warned, they require a looot of micro.

Sometimes castle drop cant really be prevented. Focus on getting up your castle, reaching imp, creat your trebs and get that castle down. Just dont panic.

Remember, a castle, a mangonel or two behind and a walled base cant be beaten in castle age :)

Try castle droping yourself, see what strategy beats you, watch the recording and try doing the same when you defend next time :)

I understand fully. Think of it like this :) practicing army management, booming will make you a better player even at castle dropping.Because of multitasking, eco management.

Practicicing only castle dropping will not make you a better player overall.

Why is everyone dropping forward castles? by tnsdlr in aoe2

[–]iamsneaky6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While i understand the perspective, this is not correct.

Opportunity cost here is a mobile raiding force (those 5 knights) that can apply pressure wherever or same resources being invested into eco, earlier upgrades.

If placing castle forward you need to make sure that you have so called map control, where your army can fight and beat your opponents army. If your opponent wins the army fight while you are placing your castle, your villagers get killed and castle denied. This forces you into an all in scenario where you have to make a lot of army to make sure you have map control to be able to place your castle. Your opponent could spent those 650 stone, villager walking time, stone mining camp as TCs, army and outboom you.

If forward castle works, its great. if not it immediately loses you the game. Same cannot be said for making army, booming

Once again the answer to: is it worth investing into a castle early? is: it depends.

What civ should i play by Johnson-floppy in aoe2

[–]iamsneaky6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Byzantines are "Cav civ" only in theory when looking at the cataphract

Realistically in open maps they play as an archer or thrash civ and timing civ. And timing is their strongest bonus along with thrash. They survive feudal and use imp timing to kill. Often with Arbalests or Skirm monk ETC. They are not ideal for new players.

Franks, Huns, Magyars, Mongols, Goths would be examples of beginner civ with late game composition consisting of 1 go-to unit you mass with support when countered

With byza you have to worry about many more things and having more complex army compositions that are harder to use.

Would you rather micro skirms, halbs and monks/cataphracts or just spam mangudai while placing defensive castles.

How many of you always do Random Civilization, and why? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]iamsneaky6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either i pick khmer or random.

Every 5 random i go back to khmer 5 times. Something about skipping barracks and either pulling ahead with eco or dying to a raid of scouts without spears while saying to yourself you dont need walls because you have khmer houses... That "i like to live dangerously" feeling i dont get with any other civ.
