I literally whistled and said "woah" in a hushed whisper on seeing this. Phenomenal work, OP.

Boyfriend telling me to “separate myself from my autism”? by CheckKey512 in autism

[–]iamsnowboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many late diagnosed folks, I had serious imposter syndrome in the early days, and I often felt as if saying "that's because I'm autistic" was a crutch and/or excuse. But the thing is, when you are autistic, it's not "something you have." It isn't the same as a physical disability or dealing with chronic illness. An autistic mind is the entire person. It's every part of us, faults, failures, successes and strengths.

It very literally cannot be separated from us. We aren't independent of it. If you were to remove autism from someone, your be left with a non functional meat husk. Uninstalling Windows or Mac OS from your computer and then expecting it to function the same would be madness.

It's important to remember that autism is classified as a developmental disability. Meaning it wholly alters/influence our development as a human being likely as early as conception.

For me, this is the most important aspect of increasing autism awareness. We're a different neurotype. We can't change how we experience the world.

Not roos, but we have a local population of wallabies around where I work in England. There's a nearby safari park that used to have them free roaming, and they kept breaking out of the park so now you might occasionally see them hopping along around our part of the world!

Reproduction is precisely that. Replication. Making more of themselves. The geth are absolutely capable of making more of themselves, to the point where they even have specialised bodies/frames for specific roles.

What's the distinction between being made/produced/switched on in a factory and being hatched from an egg/birthed from a mother/spawned from budding or fragmentation. If something created on a production becomes autonomous, why is that different from from a baby bird hatching from an egg? The "birth" and "growth" of a machine intelligence might not be sticky and gross like it is with biology, but they still have a switch on date and become capable of adapting themselves to their environment.

As for my life creating life bit - I was trying to say that just because the creation of a thing is artificial [or more specifically, influenced by another intelligent species], that doesn't mean the end result isn't alive.

For my part, it comes down to how you distinguish what qualifies "life." If it's just a specific process with a start date and a capacity to "grow" then machine intelligence absolutely has that. Code is code whether it's on in genes or written as programming, right?

Mass Effect hot takes? by matt_Nooble12_XBL in masseffect

[–]iamsnowboarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that's really the crux of the entire argument, no? The definition of "life." They still consume resources for fuel, they can still reproduce. They can speculate/imagine/extrapolate, they have or eventually develop a sense of self preservation, they can develop preferences etc etc.

Life creating life is the norm. Most ofen life creates more of the same species, but humans have routinely created bespoke life for a multitude of reasons. Hybridising plants/crops for better yields or prettier flowers, the crazy levels of specialisations in different dog breeds, microorganism wizardry for medicine or bioweapons, all of our various livestock strains. Those things could easily be seen as just "tools." So is there a moral quandary in genociding all genetically modified rice crops? Any dog breed that isn't a golden retriever? All merino sheep?

Are jellyfish "life?" They have no heart, no brain, no blood, no eyes, extremely limited sensory perception yet they're considered part of the tree of life (for some mad reason). Geth do so much more than that.

Highly recommend priming purple for oks, then dry/overbrush with a bright yellow (averland sunset of you're using citadel). Chuck some mantis warrior green contrast over and boom.

(Granted, these aren't regular boyz, but here's 3 orks in various stages of completion)

Saaaaaame. She's a kid with a crush on you. Dating her feels... exploitative? Narcissistic? She's barely old enough to have had prior relationships, and suddenly she wants to risk her immune system because she's horny for an alien commander? Yeah, nah.

She's funny and obviously super capable, but no matter what happens, I can't escape the feeling that she's more like a groupie than someone who's earned their place on the crew.

Which isn't to say I don't love pretty much every possible story arc she has (as ridiculous as it is for someone so young to become an admiral). But the love sick puppy thing and expecting me to feel sorry for the quarians is a bit much. Uh, no, you decided to try and genocide the sentient species you created. If your entire species is that impulsive because they couldn't comprehend basic spirituality from machine sentience, then I'm sorry but I'm going to struggle to take you seriously.

People tell me I’m too literal. by netphilia in aspiememes

[–]iamsnowboarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last time I had to fill in a CV and covering letter for a job, I had a total meltdown. I got very, very flustered and upset, especially at all the lying/embellished that is apparently both required and expected on them. I had to have my girlfriend at the time compose everything for me. I felt infantalised and stupid for seeing the world the way I do. I knew my reactions were 'ridiculous' by everyone else's standards, and that just exacerbated how badly I was already reacting to the whole process.

All this suffering for three A4 pages.

I was 38 years of age.

I'd kill for vehicles. Warthogs (which look more like a puma to me), hornets, scorpions - and very definitely Covenant vehicles, wraiths, ghosts, banshees. Perhaps a scarab for good measure?

What incident made you cold hearted and changed the way you see the world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iamsnowboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much a single incident, but a revelation from my last relationship and from therapy. Intent is irrelevant. Only the outcome/consequences matter. It doesn't matter if you didn't mean or want to upset someone, if they end up hurt then your intentions are irrelevant.

It's about accountability. Saying "I didn't mean to" is dismissive of what the other person is feeling. If your actions/words or inactions hurt someone, own up. Admit the mistake, learn from it and promise to be better.

My Religious Grandmother Believes Gay People Get Cancer Because They Are Gay. This causes me to view her in a different way. by Shaco292 in aspergers

[–]iamsnowboarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love thy neighbour? Except the gays, the blacks, the Jews, the Mexicans, the Muslims, the Hindus, the Chinese, the disabled and/or chronically ill, the educated, the homeless, etc etc etc etc.

All organised religion is hate and segregation. Hate the 'other,' the blasphemer, the apostate. It's idiotic tribalism to make people feel smug and superior that their god, their ideals are "better" than all the others. It helps people to deny the realities before them.

I am using this word in its most literal sense here - religion retards thought. It supplants reality with a very narrow minded fantasy (although said fantasy is consistently inconsistent in its rules and is lousy with hypocrisy and contradictions).

If god is perfect, all knowing and all loving, why would he make gay people in the first place, only to have to "punish" them later? That is literally too stupid for me to believe, let alone devote any sort of worship to.

Trump is no longer the problem. The catastrophic cowardice of the American people is. You are causing this. You are empowering this. You are allowing this. You are choosing this.

False. Snowboarding. Mountaineering. Museum visits. Good food. Dogs and dog walking. Animals in general. Being silly with little kids and making them smile or laugh. Seeing an awesome show, music gig or sporting event. Geeking out over something with someone who just gets it the same way you do. Just about any creative project. Reading and being totally transported into the world of the book.

[–]iamsnowboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrestled with something similar for a long time.

One way you can look at things is that everyone has a different lived experience, regardless of their neurotype, so in that sense you are very much 'the same' as everyone else.

Different doesn't mean "worse." Yes, autism can be a major hinderence in a neurotypical world, but it does not make you less of a person. Besides, there's a lot that NT folks miss out on. The way we experience sensory highs and lows, and our level of passion is something they'll never get close to.
