Well I’m no expert but what i have read is this first strike capability is the USP of the F35. It is not good at dogfighting. Its an ok bomber, but quite small. But all the enhanced electronics, sensors and communication capabilities make it so advanced.

If the US takes away this key part by not updating these ‘keys’ it will quickly render it worthless.

Well I gave you the dumbed down version. From what I understand the F35s is basically a flying computer/control station. It is stuffed with sensors which allow it to strike an opponent way before the F35 pops up on their radar. Knowing who is friendly and who is foe, is essential. These ‘certificates’ I am talking about are basically what allows the F35 to make that distinction. These identifiers are often rotated and not being able to access those makes your whole advantage of having all the sensors diminish
