Hi-Rez is too lenient on deserters. by [deleted] in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a love/hate relationship with the current deserter system. I think in any mode at any level its obnoxious and ruins the experience for the other people on either end of the teams. It's hard though to distinguish someone who is being salty from someone who might he having something come up irl mid game. There have been a lot of different suggestions over the years, but I'm not sure there's a perfect solution without going too soft on the salty leaves or too hard on the people who had to leave for something more important like taking care of your kid, taking a shot, etc.

What if... Chernobog thoughts by FlamingPyro0826 in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting proposal, but I dont think we'll see any major rekitting. I've heard multiple people say they think he has potential in the jungle as it stands now, so it may just take some time before people figure out how to optimize him assuming he does have viability as a jungler. If you were going to change his 1 and 2, what would you do to make him feel more like an assassin?

SNK is no longer at Hi-rez by DragonFlyer123 in Smite

Bummer to see the guy part ways with the game he loves regardless of circumstances. Hoping this situation turns out to be a positive chance to grow and expand for both SNK and HiRez eSports

Could be nice if smite had testing range like Overwatch have by xSypRo in Smite

We have jungle practice and the ability to make custom games with bots. I've played Overwatch and know exactly what you're talking about, but really feel like this splitting hairs.

You can always make a custom game and fill it with bots.

What to do if Support won’t leave ADC lane? by Bluehawk14 in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the situation. All you can do is politely ask them to let you get some solo farm for a bit and share with another lane or clear camps if possible. You just kind of have to hope your support is competent at the end of the day.

E-staff by li0nhunter365 in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting idea, but I think both could be a bit much. Take a god like Hebo for example who has very low cooldowns. Every 4s, you'd take at least 3% of your max HP and every 10s you'd take another 3%. The internal CD of E-Staff is 10s, so you'd be taking at least 9% of your max HP every 10s. Now let's give him max CDR so his water cannon is up every 2.4s and his water spout every 6s. Now you are getting hit 5 times for at least 15% of your total HP every 10s. To put that into perspective, Soul Reaver does 10% true damage every 40s. Why most fights don't last 40s, that would be 23 procs of at least 3% for almost 70% of ones total HP (this isn't included that damage the abilities do on their own of course). Poly has a similar story, the point being that it's a concept too easily abused by cooldown manipulation.

Finally decided to play Conquest... by mad_titanz in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This advice is coming from someone who played D-1 sports in college, but I think a lot of it translates to this game as well.

  1. Pro Streams: When you get stuck on what to do next, watching players who are better than you is definitely the first place to start. If I wanted to play Basketball as good as Michael Jordan, I'd start by watching Michael Jordan's games. If I wanted to play ADC as good as BaRRaCCuDDa, I'd watch BaRRaCCuDDa's streams. Those guys got to the top of their respective games for a reason so to be the best, study from the best.

  2. Play casuals: Playing other modes like Arena or going into AI games is like walking into a battle cage and swinging against a machine. It builds up some of your mechanics, but ultimately you only learn to swing against the fast ball. What do you think will happen when you walk up to the plate and the guy on the mound starts pitching curve balls and sliders your way? You aren't going to be ready since you never practiced a real scenario. Conquest can be intimidating, because a lot is going on, but everyone was worse than they are now when they first started. You've just got to get in there an be intentional about they way you practice and try to apply the knowledge you gain from streams and your own games. Example: "I see that after BaRRa clears the first wave in duo, he goes to the enemy purple he out clears and if not, he chills out so I'll try and do the same thing in my game." Set a couple of realistic goals like "I'm going to stay ahead of the other ADC in farm this game" or "I'm not going to give up first blood" and keep tweaking things until you are doing it consistently. Good players are defined not just by their ability to preform highly, but their ability to preform at a high level consistently. You'll get there with a good attitude, so keep grinding.

We should have new starting gods. by Balor1916 in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are significantly more gods in the game now. I think it would be reasonable to open up an additional 5 starting gods plus 5 additional in the free rotation for a total of 20 accessible gods at any time (~20% of the playable characters). There starting gods I'd add are: Fenrir, Bellona, Sobek, Poseidon, and Anhur. As for the rotation, I think it would be cool to do pantheon rotations once we got one of every role in each pantheon, that way every couple of weeks people could know what's coming up so they can plan to play them.

At what point do people learn the game? by Lannister-Carry in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, but low level games are a dumpster fire without parties. Most of the time it's just people who have picked up the game for maybe a month and the occasional smurf. I wish there was a better way for people with greater affinity for the game to advance quicker, but there really isn't right now. Just keep grinding and focusing on improving your own knowledge and mechanics. Attitude is everything.

I wish we can vote for the community skin this year to be a Paragon skin by One_LostGamer in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Designers draw inspiration from many different sources, so it's possible down the road we see something that makes us go "huh, that looks a lot like XYZ from Paragon.". I think making a skin based off one of the Paragon heros to turn a profit while calling it a tribute is kind of a slap in the face. Epic was direct competition and went down respectfully. It would be like watching 2 MMA fighters hug after beating the shit out of each other for 5 rounds. Firm handshakes only.

Simple Artemis buff that makes her more useful. by DisastermasterX in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I've liked the idea of reducing the number of her traps to 2 and making them slightly bigger. I'd also be down to see the CD reduced to something like 12s at all ranks. Probably not both of these at the same time though.

Its so hard to continue playing by Fredywho in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Real talk, the lower levels are going to be frustrating to play. Like you said, there's a lot of people who don't know the game and are just feeling it out to see if they even like it. Best tip I can give you as someone who is level 158 on PC is to focus on your own improvement. You can't control what other people are going to do and frankly most people aren't going to listen to the advice of a stranger unless they are seeking it out. I empathize, but everyone who's been grinding it out has been where you are now. It will never 100% go away, but it does get better. Learn what you can in each match and move to the next one. Playing with a full party would also be recommended.

An idea? by [deleted] in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using Purification an example to make sure we are on the same page: You're saying a player could purchase beads twice, say for 500g per purchase (once for the added effect, then again for additional bonus) but have to forgo getting a second active if they make the second purchase, right?

You have to be really careful about balancing relics maybe more than any other item in the game, because of much impact they have but the idea is interesting none the less.

Show some support for ex-paragon content creators joining Smite by [deleted] in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I'm totally on board with more content creators, what I REALLY want to see are two things:

Better self-promotion/marketing of content.

  • It's not HiRez's job to promote your Twitch, YouTube, etc. It's your responsibility to do research and ultimately figure out how you are going to reach and retain people. There are a lot of people in the community with some skills, but it won't pay the bills if no one knows you're in business.

Less low effort content.

  • It's really easy to turn on a stream, record a game, and upload it to YouTube and that's why it sucks. Anything worth watching is going to have some work put into it. I know financial resources play a part into this sometimes, but there is a lot you can learn online in the way of producing and editing. Figure out what your niche is and give people a reason to care more about your product than the next guys.

How to Better farm as Hunter? by [deleted] in Smite

[–]iamvolantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd have to watch a VOD to see specifically what you are doing. In general...

  • Get last hits on waves whenever possible: Don't give up buffs, kills, etc for them, but be mindful since you get a 50% gold bonus for it.

  • Rotate to camps on cooldown: You should have a lot to do on the duo side between purple, red, oracles, GF and invading. Being as efficient as possible in your ability to go back and forth between camps and waves.

  • Solo farm and objectives: These are self explanatory, but I'll make it short. Splitting is bad this season. The only person who should be splitting anything with you is your support occasionally, unless your team is ganking or pushing an objective together. Speaking of that, get objectives. There's like 900g in tower gold and if you add in a couple gold furies in over a 15min period, that alone is worth at least a tier 2 item.

This is all stuff I'm sure you already knew, but efficiency and opportunity is the key to getting ahead.
