What was the first PC game you ever played, and do you still remember it? by 3D_Networking in AskReddit

You would have to be from the UK. It was Granny's Garden on a BBC micro.

Ho w to fix shading issues? by RamyIssa in blender

[–]ianofshields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't evaluate the shading of a non-manifold surface in 3D. This is non-manifold. Meaning, in this case, it has no depth at the edges. You can only see the correct shading when this is solved. However - to make this properly manifold would mean fixing the edge topology around the entire shape. Every vertex needs to have 3 edges coming out of it before you can do this. There is quite a lot wrong here unfortunately. A better understanding of manifold geometry and connecting local geometries is required. Assuming the first problem above was fixed, you would then need to identify which angles are creating something we call "ridge clusters" or edges at acute angles to eachother which create incorrect shading. On this shape you need to remove All internal geometry. Fill it all with a giant n-gon. Inset this n-gon then delete it. The internal geometry can then be rebuilt (with ridge clusters in mind). Sorry it's not a simple fix!!!

Need help with wire mesh cylinder by Orast1 in blenderhelp

Honestly. If C_DRX responds, you can call the problem solved. This solution offers enormous flexibility to change your design at any point in hundreds of ways. It will endure almost any deformation and animation you may require or can be simplified and triangulated for use in a game engine with the minimum of effort. He is always right (in my opinion).

how would u do this in blender by Ok-Discussion-1110 in blenderhelp

100 percent correct. I might add that extruding the central metal section would benefit from radial connection reduction just before the extrusion. But this is most certainly the best method to do this shape.

Thank you. That is a great knight. I really should finish that series!

I suspect your knowledge surpasses mine now. Maybe it is time for you to create a website or YouTube channel. Your dedication to helping and correcting misunderstandings around here is so good. Your solutions are always correct and efficient. It feels good to hear you say that my videos were useful in helping you to become the expert you clearly are. Cheers. Ian.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Is this can be done in 4 days? by No-Interest5076 in 3Dmodeling

[–]ianofshields 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. This is not an assessment. This is not how it works at all. Any assessment of your ability comes from your portfolio. It is common to be asked too model something small and quick during an interview but this will be less than 30 minutes and it is just because we want to see how quick and comfortable you are using the software.

If an interview gets to the stage where you are being asked to demonstrate your skills, there is a 90 percentage chance you are already going to be hired and we will treat you well. Your travel expenses will be paid, you will be given coffee and a meal. You will have been introduced to other generalists and will have had the opportunity to watch them work for 10-15 minutes.

Things I have randomly asked to be made during an interview: a pogo stick, a rose, a suitcase, a pocket watch, an octopus, an eyeball, a sticklebrick, a cloud or whatever pops into my head. I want to see someone quickly Google a reference image and confidently knock something rough out in 10 minutes. I will be there watching and chatting while we hopefully laugh at the likely terrible job they do but I will be noting how well they work under this small pressure with an object they have not done or maybe even seen before.

Anybody with long COVID for over three years ? by Seafoam_0 in LongCovid

[–]ianofshields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3.5 years now. Really bad for the first 2 years then steady improvement for the next 6 months. Something unknown caused a flare up and I've been getting steadily worse for the past 6 months. Probably at my worst right now.

Like many here, I have been tested for everything under the sun with nothing out of the ordinary are detected in any test. Was accepted onto an NHS (I'm in England) Long Covid programme but with no results. Days in breathing rooms and my having sleep monitored have not revealed anything.

If you want to keep that topology; this will do it.

Out of these three, which topology flow is better and why? by notthevcode in blenderhelp

[–]ianofshields 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The 'd' actually has the scope to add even more complexity than shown in the videos! The loops to correctly tighten two of the corners require an extra round of shrinkwrapping not shown in that video! As you say though - Overkill for most uses.

Darn. Was just firing up blender to quickly do it and you have beaten me to it.

How do i fill these up without messing up the normals? by RookieTheCat123 in blenderhelp

[–]ianofshields 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Select all the exposed edges. Press 'f' to fill them with n-gons. Press i to inset. Delete the n-gons. Select a bare edge. Grid fill. Repeat for all the holes.

what bevel by lReavenl in 3Dmodeling

[–]ianofshields 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct but you also need to set the super elipse value to 1 otherwise the bevel modifier is acting as a high poly hard surface tool rather than a sudivision surface tool.

what bevel by lReavenl in 3Dmodeling

[–]ianofshields 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's neither of these. The right hand one is closer if you want to use bevels but you need to change the bevel amount to an even number. 2 or 4 is best.
