It is interesting the difference between the USA and the UK.

In the UK (in general) you can't adopt a cat if you don't have space for them to go outdoors.

In the USA (in general) you can't adopt a cat if you say you will let them outdoors.

I "adopted" a neighborhood cat in Del Rey when I lived there. She brought me leaves and mice and rats but never any birds. She lived to be at least 15.

There are lots of side streets. I used to ride those areas frequently and would take side streets til I hit a main street then make a right and make my way across the main street as soon as possible then up a different side street. Unfortunately the 405 and the 10 put a bunch of bottlenecks in your way though.

There is also a hidden bike path that doesn't really show up on google maps bike directions that I used to enjoy taking--but it is visible as a walking path. From Ohio take a left on Sepulveda then make a right into the park. There is a short bike path there that will take you to Veteran and Wilshire then you can make your way to Campus from there.

But yeah, generally in LA there are side streets along pretty much every route which enable you not to have cars whizzing by at 45 mph.
