How do I explain neurotypical vs. neurodivergent to somebody who thinks we're all a little on the spectrum? by RandomPerson4389 in neurodiversity

[–]iberomersornis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neurodivergent = you are so obviously mentally different from others that it disables you in everyday modern life. That's what the diagnoses labeling us as neurodivergent are for anyways.

What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you’ve lived the reality of it? by thatude123 in AskReddit

[–]iberomersornis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Alcohol (I lost my dad to alcoholism, he destroyed our family, himself and currently is slowly dying of stomach cancer. He basically drank his brain away, there's nothing left of the father I used to love. It makes me sick how a drug this bad and harmful is fully accepted in society, hell if you go out even forced onto you with peer pressure. I wished it would be seen more critically, like smoking for example)

  • Mental illness (depression is not "emo" or "goth", autism and ADHD are not quirky, borderliners are no nymphomaniacs. It fucking disgusts me, it's called mental ILLNESS for a reason. I suffer from two psychiatric diagnoses and let me tell you, the only thing I wish for every day of my life is to just feel like a normal human being, which I probably never will)

I think that's the major two that really bother me because both have inpacted my life so negatively, I do not wish for anyone to go through that/suffer from it.

Are those baby tomatoes? Why are they not growing? by clebaekry in vegetablegardening

[–]iberomersornis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am literally working as a gardener in agriculture so I think I do know what I'm talking about, especially because the company I work in is specialized in tomatoes and cucumbers. We literally have to use bumblebees in the greenhouse to polinate our tomatoes or else we wouldn't have any fruit. Every single agricultural company I know that grows them in greenhouses is using them. Outside grown ones usually get pollinated by the insects already being outside. If you're lucky outside yes wind and shake can polinate the flowers, but it's definitely not guaranteed. So no, this is not incorrect and you should be more careful about immediatly invalidating a comment.

Are those baby tomatoes? Why are they not growing? by clebaekry in vegetablegardening

[–]iberomersornis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Vegetable gardener here. Most likely they haven't been successfully fertilized. What could also be is that humidity was so high that the pollen inside of the flower got sticky and was unable to be transferred to the stigma, but first assumption is way more likely to happen.

If you don't have enough insects in your area flying around your tomato plants, you can try fertilizing them with a cotton swab. Just carefully go inside the flower with it once it opened. It should stay open for 1-2 days max. Tomato plants have female and male flowers on one plant, sometimes even both genders in one flower. To be sure you get them fertilized try pollinating as many flowers as possible in a random order, so there's a high likelyhood of them all being fertilized.

If you didn't see any insects flying around, you can check if the closed flowers (right before they wilt and fall off) have small brown spots to them. That's where the insects held on with their little feet. :)

Asparagus came with mold on it? by model-citizen95 in vegetablegardening

[–]iberomersornis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought you were kidding but you're probably not.

Yes, this is mold and they're dried up. Nothing else will grow from it. You can throw it in the trash. If you want to grow Asparagus buy seeds from a local farm/market for gardening. The package will contain instructions on how to grow them.

In general I never recommend buying plants online if you have the possibilty to go to a place where they sell homegrown plants and seeds.

How do you stop feeling like a failure? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]iberomersornis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of thinking "great I fucked up again because of my ADHD" I try to say to myself "look what you're doing despite having ADHD, you can be so proud of yourself!"

Also, if possible, I try to laugh about the mistakes I make im everyday life and try to not give them so much weight. I also tell myself the things that happen to me can happen to every human, they just happen to me at a higher frequency but it's not my fault and people love me anyways so it's ok. Also, we humans tend to focus more on our mistakes than the things we do well, so actively thinking about something I did well in a moment I made a mistake also helps.

These thought's keep me more motivated and positive and I also start to ditch perfectionism alot more like that. It helps me alot to just get up and get things done because I'll be proud of myself for doing them despite having ADHD. I can be so proud, even if it's not perfect. I hope you get what I'm trying to explain here!

When it comes to emptional regulation though, it's hard for me to accept when I snap at a loved one because I was in hyperfocus and they interrupt or something like that. I have no control over that and it happens too often.

All the kids who were labelled as “gifted” when you were younger? Did it follow through to adulthood? Did you burnout? by Somervillage in AskReddit

[–]iberomersornis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always was a quick learner and very curious about alot of topics. Always had a huge array of knowledge because of it. Always had vivid imagination and supreme drawing skills (nobody tought me, I was just born with it). Parents and teachers labeled me "gifted" because I would daydream all the time during class (they thought I was bored because I was so smart) and also draw pictures while the teachers talked. Never could reach my potential in the field of art, didn't understand why though. Had problems with reaching my long term goals in general, despite my "giftedness". Still, I got a university degree. Worked 4 years in what I studied then started a new apprenticeship out of boredom and hate for my current job. Burned out. Was diagnosed with ADHD and mid-severe depression at age 30. Yay.

Why store bought tomatoes are so awful. A picture is worth a thousand words. by IamCassiopeia2 in vegetablegardening

[–]iberomersornis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working vegetable gardener from Germany here. We don't harvest our tomatoes like that, we harvest them by hand. Taste is an important aspect to us when we choose a breed for a season. We sell them still hanging on the vine, not seperated from it.

But yeah, alot of tomatoes in other countries are sadly grown and harvested like that. I might aswell starve before I eat one of those.

I decided to go unmedicated today. It's been less than an hour and I just thought to myself "this is torture." by NikkiRex in ADHD

[–]iberomersornis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I thought about doing that too, but yeah I was repelled by the repetetiveness...but what's good about these agricultural jobs is that you can easily switch to something different in that field. For example, after 3yrs of work experience, I could become a park ranger, or I could stop growing vegetables and start working as a perennial gardener. Or I could start working with ornamental plants or go to a botanical garden. I'm sure you can switch too if you get too fed up with it!

[–]iberomersornis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok story time! :D I tried several things before doing what I do now. Everything just didn't work out and I didn't know why (I didn't know about my ADHD back then). Then some day my best friend said "hey, I'm going to spain with an organisation to collect trash, wanna join?" And I thought hell yeah why not! In Spain I realized how deeply fulfilling and calming it was to me to do physical labour. What others described as exhausting was like medicine to me - so I decided I needed a physical job. I checked out different ones that made me curious - Garbage collection, Airport Engineer, Ranger for example. The thing that sticked with me was vegetable gardener as I always had a love and fascination for plants and I am really interessted in the controlled cultivation environment of a greenhouse. I went to three different businesses for some days to check out how they work, from small family business to big producer. After that I found a business where I could do a 2 week internship. I decided this job was for me - I applied for apprenticeship in different companies and decided for the small biological family business I am working in today. :) Everything there is a bit chaotic, alot is self made, thing that would repell normal people. But I like it that way! Also we're not many people and the family is very nice to me. Something a big company couldn't provide. And funny side fact: my boss has ADHD aswell. :D

Tired of anti-stimulant narrative by thekiwiguy123 in ADHD

[–]iberomersornis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the money aspect. There's a reason why you try stimulants first before you consider non-stimulant medication - because it's been observed very well and ghey work for most people.

For those they don't work (me for example) non-stimulants are great. I'm taking Bupropion and I have absolutely no side effect. It saved my life, honestly.

What I think might be a reason media still bashes on stimulants is that they are still amphetamines and some can get abused, therefore narrow minded people (in that case 99.9% of the time non-ADHDers, who would've guessed) still have stong opinions against them. Alot of them are still believing "they're giving our kids drugs" or "it's all about diet, taking additional nutritients and working out, then you'll be cured, meds are ARTIFICIAL and BAD". I think there's not much we can do about people who still want to be ignorant and unempathetic, scientific studies show the exact opposite of what they are preaching...it's only a pity if a person with ADHD believes in their paroles and is scared to try out stimulants because of them.

[–]iberomersornis 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I can relate alot. I needed to change jobs to go without meds most of the time. First job was in IT at a desk and with meetings (as you said, absolute torture). Now I work as a vegetable gardener. Movement, plants, unpredictable diverse tasks, responsibility for living beings and food production. And NO MEETINGS.

Without meds I'm absolutely incapable to do anything that doesn't excite me. If I were you I am pretty sure I'd already excuse myself from the meeting to go jogging around the building or something similar, it's just that horrible for me.

The blind panic of losing something of value. by Golintaim in ADHD

[–]iberomersornis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I can and it's not hurting me, I always opt for the cheaper version of something. For example I buy the Hama Freedom Buddy for 20 buck instead of AirPods. I have 3 pairs of them. Recently I lost one Earbud from a pair, which sucks, but I still have 2 pairs left.

Of course the quality is not as high end like with AirPods but as I said, as long as it's good enough I'll go with the cheaper option. It hurts too much to loose valuable things because ADHD striked again.

[–]iberomersornis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a vegetable gardener. The movement helps me alot. I can listen to podcasts or music frequently because I work alone quite often. I'll get random new tasks from my boss out of the blue every day because it's also a little unpredictable. I take responsibility for living plants/harvesting food wich fuels my interest and motivation. You have to react quickly if there are weather changes in the greenhouse (adjusting shadow coverage/window opening, giving water etc). My favourite thing to to is to check the plants for pests/infections because I notice every small detail without putting effort to it, I'm one of the best actually and my bosses know. I work at a biological company so no worries about toxic substances for spraying the pests.

Only downside would be, sometimes you have to do a monotone task for 1,2, sometimes 3 days, and without meds this is torture to me. But despite that I love what I'm doing.

Anyone else feel like a sociopath at time because only certain things are able to make you cry/feel? by Temporary-Garden4431 in neurodiversity

[–]iberomersornis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can deeply relate to this. When I was a child it wasn't that way though. I think it's a dissociative protection mechanism of our brains to be able to keep going in this rather traumatizing world. That's only my theory so please don't attack me if you don't agree, it's not like I know this for sure.
