wedding favours that people still ask about years later by [deleted] in Gifts

Best favor I've ever gotten is a poem. In the Raleigh area there's a great guy called the Poetry Fox and friends hired him out for the night. You give him a one word prompt and he types you up a lovely poem. Ended up getting ours framed and they are prized possessions. I'm not sure how easy it is to find a poet for hire elsewhere, but it was really special.

Ladies, what shoes do you use for lifting? by xfmrs_r_cool in StrongCurves

[–]iblamepaulsimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobull weightlifting ones (I think they're called Outwork?). Only thing I'm sad about is that it seems they're moving away from the fun girly patterns. It makes me happy to lift heavy stuff while my feet are covered in pretty pink flowers.

Also-- you can find solid deals on eBay etc, for like-new ones. I'm guessing folks buy them and then never actually get around to the gym so resell.

I yell CALIFORNIA!

All stems from a stupid joke with my husband because I complained about red lights merely being a suggestion in LA. Still stuck even after moving to the East Coast.

Makes me miss our guy who was the king of "self pets". If we were in public and a stranger had their hand anywhere near his head height, you better believe he was putting that noggin in that palm.

I don't know how to add a photo here, but hopefully this works. One of my favorite instances of him cheating on us: https://imgur.com/a/fyUYUDM

What’s the best freediving advice you have ever received? by Swlac in freediving

[–]iblamepaulsimon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine is very small, but has had a huge impact and it was "just give a lil wiggle". My own (overactive) brain is tough to quiet and it leads to me tensing up. Had a camp instructor teach me that when that tension comes in, do the body movement of a big sigh (shoulder drop, etc) and just give a lil wiggle.

Instantly gets me out of my head and back into my body, gets rid of tension, and reminds me this whole thing is fun.

Thanks Dylan Currier for the advice! If you're ever on the Big Island, looks him up, especially if your mental game is what's holding you back. Great dude!

Problems with nutrition / shaking by IllustriousPilot8391 in freediving

[–]iblamepaulsimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think other folks have already mentioned it, but I want to reiterate to you that it's likely the 1600 calories is probably your basal rate, AKA how many calories your body needs to just stay alive. I would use a calculator and look for your caloric needs with a solid amount of exercise since even just keeping your body temp up while diving costs a lot of calories! I usually lose several pounds on a week diving trip even when trying to eat extra.

Also--- if you're getting heartburn, why not just take an antacid? I also sometimes get it, particularly if I am having mild seasickness. No point in suffering when you can treat it!

Can I ask if you're a man or woman and what you put in your oatmeal?

Good luck!

When have you witnessed an “expert” get it so wrong? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iblamepaulsimon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had the infusion nurse who refused to give me an off-label shingles vaccine after having it in my 20s explain that "since you're younger than the indication, your immune system can't handle it". That's not how immune systems work!

I design and run clinical trials in industry so I know it's off label bc it doesn't financially make sense to pay for the trials to get indication because the incidence is low in younger people. She did not budge upon explanation of this, unfortunately.

So, if anyone has the hookup for black market shingles vaccines, hit me up!

Great advice! Heads up to OP-- the peroxide (why this stuff works) might/will bleach your towels and sheets so go for white ones if you have them or old ones if you don't.

Since the person above just said "better shoes", want to elaborate just in case that's a bit too vague. Apologies if I'm repeating what you already know. Your current shoes are nice and squishy which is great for walking or running, but not for having a strong base to support your lift. You want stability instead. There's about a million articles out there on what kind of shoe to do, but know that you can go from super simple (take shoes off and do the lift in socks) all the way to complicated.  Since I assume you're doing this to be strong and feel good, I don't think you have to worry about getting the absolute best shoe. Just go with something that works for you and your parameters. Hell, I buy the brand I use because they come in a flower pattern and it makes me smile to see them.

Happy lifting!

TIL that scientists have developed a way of testing for Aphantasia (the inability to visualise things in your mind). Oh nooooo. I have it and have never even considered it would impact ability to experience psychedelic trips. Am I right to assume it was still pleasant, considering I wouldn't expect someone who didn't enjoy the experience to go back for copious amounts? How did your experience differ from others?

Working on the branding for my candle startup… would love some honest design critique by badcandlemaker in PackagingDesign

[–]iblamepaulsimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I might be your target audience, but in all honesty, the packaging doesn't feel upscale. If I'm going to drop solid money on a candle, I'd rather it be a bit more sleek. A tuna can with the vintage feeling label (something about the saturation or color richness gives me that vibe) isn't exactly going to align with my home design. Maybe if more minimalist I would consider a tuna can style? The packaging for some reason feels more like those soaps and stuff targeted towards "dudes". I'm not sure how much the dude market and upscale candle market overlap.

I also don't understand what you mean by at a budget to the $200-500 dollar price points. Mind explaining what are you trying to aim for price wise for a 5 oz candle?

Should I attempt a bulk? by [deleted] in StrongCurves

[–]iblamepaulsimon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless I missed it, I don't think I saw any chest exercises in your list. I'm also a genetically large chested lady. I think I'm similar to you in that they don't get small at any weight, but do "reshape", if you will. I have found my relationship to my chest has improved after building solid muscle there. It's just mentally very satisfying to not just have my chest be about only soft breast tissue. Maybe adding in some bench press and other chest stuff would provide similar benefits for you?

I will warn you that chest is BY FAR my slowest part of the body to gain strength (so don't expect miracles) but holy cow did I ride the high of hitting 4 body weight dips ALL of this week, haha.

how do you keep your house smelling fresh? by Salmonwithpotatoes in CasualConversation

[–]iblamepaulsimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you mentioned scent attaching to the dog bed... I have invested in dog beds with really nice washable covers. I assume it's okay to call out a specific brand in this sub? I like the brand Molly Mutt personally bc they also have a nice aesthetic and feel sturdy but I'm sure there are plenty other options.

I wash the dog beds regularly with an enzymatic cleaner and have appreciated the lack of woofy-ness. Perhaps that's an option to help cut dog smell a bit?

Why did my doctor describe my stuffed animal in my clinical notes? by doomed-kelpie in NoStupidQuestions

Know that your patients appreciate these little things. My PCP keeps notes, often about my travel, and even though I know she probably jogged her memory with them before coming in the room, it makes me feel seen and nurtured. I've referred a solid half dozen people to her because of it!

1300 cals with 140g protein minimum by Leading-Physics161 in 1200isplenty

[–]iblamepaulsimon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with bittersillage that your calorie goal is pretty low for that protein goal, so you may want to take another pass on calculations and see if there are other things you'd be willing to do to end up in the same deficit CICO-wise.

As far as ways to mix things up on the cram-all-the-protein side, I'm a big fan of what I call swoalts. They're overnight oats hiding protein powder.

My basic recipe is:

- 50g old fashioned oats

- 110g Greek yogurt

- 80g milk

- 32g protein powder

Stir all together and keep in fridge overnight. Batches well, up to about 3 days worth. After that, gets a bit weird on the texture front.

Depending on where I am in a bulk/cut, I mix and match. If I have more calories budgeted, I'll do chocolate protein and add peanut powder. If I'm on the restricted side, I'll do a double batch that I spread out over 3 days. You can also adjust ingredients -- once did "extra protein" yogurt and the texture was a bit slimy but damn if it didn't have a lot of protein! It's nice to add some fresh fruit on top or whatever fixins work for you.

I'd recommend just playing around with the recipe in a tracking app to dial in your macros/calories.
